Chapter 14: Who is the Thief?
Zhao Zhaodi thought about how Yang Xue would be severely punished by Old Man Yang and Wang Dani, and her pace quickened significantly.
Just as she reached the door, she heard Wang Dani’s cursing coming from the courtyard. Listening closely, she was still berating Yang the Third and his family.
Zhao Zhaodi’s face lit up with excitement. It seemed Wang Dani was truly furious with Yang the Third’s family; she would go in now and add fuel to the fire. Yang the Third and the rest could just wait for their doom.
With these excited thoughts, Zhao Zhaodi pushed open the door impatiently: “Mother, I’m back! Let me tell you, Yang—”
Seeing how decisively Yang the Third’s family had left, Wang Dani’s heart was still filled with resentment, so she stood in the courtyard cursing.
However, since Yang the Third and the others could no longer hear her, Wang Dani felt even more frustrated.
When she heard Zhao Zhaodi’s voice, Wang Dani finally remembered—she had been so busy cursing Yang the Third’s family that she had forgotten about this “thief in the house,” Zhao Zhaodi.
Fine. This wretched girl, Zhao Zhaodi, actually dared to come back after stealing from the family.
Wang Dani was looking for a place to vent her anger. She immediately grabbed a nearby broom and lunged toward Zhao Zhaodi.
Before Zhao Zhaodi could finish her report, she saw Wang Dani rushing at her aggressively and froze on the spot in a daze.
In that moment of hesitation, the broom landed squarely on her.
“Ah!~” Zhao Zhaodi let out a shrill scream. “Mother, you’ve got the wrong person! It’s me, Dabao’s mother!”
Wang Dani did not stop. The broom fell precisely on Zhao Zhaodi, leaving her with nowhere to hide.
“I’m hitting exactly who I mean to hit, you short-sighted wretch! You actually dared to steal from me?”
“I’m going to beat you to death!”
Zhao Zhaodi was beaten into a state of confusion. “Mother, what are you talking about?”
The rest of the Yang family heard the commotion and came out of their rooms.
Yang the Eldest naturally couldn’t watch his wife get beaten. He rushed forward to stop Wang Dani: “Mother, Mother, stop hitting her first. Let’s hear what she has to say. Maybe there’s a hidden reason for this.”
“Pah! A hidden reason for stealing? What hidden reason could she have? She stole from our Yang family to feed those losers in her own family!”
“Mother, stop hitting me, stop! Why are you hitting me?” Zhao Zhaodi began to beg for mercy.
Fortunately, Wang Dani was getting tired. She stopped, stepped forward, and grabbed Zhao Zhaodi by the hair.
“Zhao Zhaodi, you better spit out everything you took, or I’ll have the Eldest divorce you!”
Zhao Zhaodi was both bewildered and panicked. “Mother, what did you say? You want the Eldest to divorce me?”
She hadn’t done anything wrong. Her mother-in-law was usually quite good to her. Why the sudden talk of divorce?
Wait! Something must have happened at home while she was trapped in that “ghostly place” by that wretched girl Yang Xue.
Right, where was that brat Yang Xue?
“Having the Eldest divorce you is getting off easy. If you don’t return everything, I’ll beat you to death.”
Zhao Zhaodi’s head was full of questions. Her scalp was being pulled so hard her face contorted in pain. “Mother, what things? What on earth are you talking about? I don’t understand!”
“Was it Yang Xue? Did that brat make you angry? Or Yang Shuang? Was it those ‘money-losing’ girls who upset you?”
Zhao Zhaodi didn’t know what had happened, but that didn’t stop her from trying to pin it on Yang the Third’s family.
Mentioning them only made Wang Dani angrier. She tightened her grip on Zhao Zhaodi’s hair.
Zhao Zhaodi’s eyes filled with tears from the pain. “Mother~ I really don’t know what’s going on. I was set up by that brat Yang Xue!”
Hearing this, Wang Dani narrowed her eyes. “What did you say?”
“Mother, I really don’t know why you’re mad at me. I was knocked unconscious by Yang Xue yesterday. She even threw me near the old mad cripple’s house. I only just woke up!”
“Mother, please let go. I really don’t know what happened. I can explain!”
Hearing this, Wang Dani was inclined to believe her. After all, she had also been hit by Yang Xue yesterday.
Wang Dani finally let go and asked coldly, “Is what you’re saying the truth?”
Zhao Zhaodi nodded frantically. “Mother, every word is true!”
“Mother, you mentioned ‘things’ just now. What exactly did you mean?”
The thought that she might have been played by Yang the Third’s family made Wang Dani’s blood boil. Her voice sounded like a ticking bomb.
“What did I mean? Last night, things went missing from this house. Zhao Zhaodi, do you swear you didn’t steal them?”
Zhao Zhaodi was stunned. “Things are missing? What’s gone?” She immediately swore: “Mother, I swear, I really didn’t know.”
The rest of the family also realized they might have been tricked by Yang the Third’s family—that they were the ones who stole the items.
Old Man Yang, in particular, was fuming. During the family division earlier, he thought he had taught Yang the Third a lesson. He hadn’t realized he was being played for a fool.
If the items were truly stolen by Yang the Third’s family, it included dozens of pounds of grain, over a dozen eggs, an earthenware pot, a machete… all sorts of things. If they had all that, they could live comfortably for quite a while.
The thought of being fooled by the son he looked down upon most made Old Man Yang nearly choke on his rage.
Wang Dani suddenly shrieked: “This is rebellion! Eldest, Second, go and catch Yang the Third’s family and bring them back! Go now!”
Just as Yang the Eldest and Yang the Second were about to move, they heard a sneer: “Mother, do you really believe what Sister-in-law says?”
The speaker was Sun Qiuping. She wasn’t about to let Zhao Zhaodi off that easily.
“You don’t actually think Yang the Third’s family took the items, do you? Weren’t you all watching them as they left? Where could they have possibly hidden those things?”
Upon hearing Sun Qiuping’s point, the family paused. It was true. When Yang the Third’s family left earlier, they were completely exposed; there was nowhere to hide stolen goods.
To defend his wife, Yang the Eldest raised a question: “What if they stole them last night, hid them somewhere outside, and then picked them up today on their way to the mountain?”
Having lived with the Yangs for so many years, Sun Qiuping knew exactly how they operated. She asked with a smile: “Didn’t you send someone to follow them?”
Yang the Eldest choked on his words. They had indeed sent his youngest son, Yang Shu, to follow Yang the Third’s family all the way up the mountain.
In an instant, everyone’s eyes turned toward Yang Shu.
