Chapter 13: Going Up the Mountain
As soon as the Family Separation Document was in hand, Wang Dani immediately began to cry: “Get out! Take your things and get lost right now! Didn’t you want to hide from some flood? Well, get lost then!”
Yang Lao-san ignored her shouting and walked over to pick Yang Xue up onto his back. “We’ll leave as soon as we finish packing.”
In the past, if Yang Lao-san had been yelled at by Wang Dani like that, he would have been too scared to even lift his head. But after the battle they just went through, he suddenly realized that resisting didn’t actually kill you. On the contrary, if you didn’t resist, people would just bully you to death.
Seeing the situation, the villagers offered Yang Lao-san a few words of comfort before leaving. They also had to go back to pack their things and reinforce their houses. Of course, some felt that Yang Lao-san’s decision to split the family was foolish and couldn’t help but sneer at him. Yang Lao-san no longer cared about their ridicule.
Once most people had left, the Village Chief stepped forward to console Yang Lao-san. He told him to seek him out if they faced difficulties, then he left as well. As the Chief, he had much more to prepare. Besides moving his own belongings and reinforcing his house, he had to look after the other families in the village who wanted to take shelter from the flood. He couldn’t focus solely on Yang Lao-san’s family.
Besides, it seemed that Yang Lao-san’s family didn’t need much help at the moment. They had no house to reinforce and no large stockpile of grain to move. The only real concern was Yang Xue’s illness. But the Chief was no doctor; he could only pull out some copper coins to give to Yang Lao-san so he could buy medicine for her first. They had to survive this crisis first; nursing her back to health could be dealt with later.
Yang Lao-san was naturally reluctant to take the money, but after Yang Xue spoke up and thanked “Chief Uncle,” he felt embarrassed enough to accept it.
After the Chief left, Yang Lao-san said, “Xue-ya, it’s not good for us to take the Chief’s money like this.”
“It’s fine, Father. We’ll find a way to pay him back later.”
“Father, go to the doctor’s place to get the medicine first. Remember, try to make sure the villagers see you going there.”
Yang Lao-san nodded. “Right, I’ll go now.”
While Yang Lao-san went for the medicine, Qian Yue’e wasn’t idle either. She began packing their belongings with the children. In truth, they didn’t have much to pack: a few sets of clothes, two quilts, and the five catties of brown rice. It took no time at all. Once packed, they just waited for Yang Lao-san to return so they could head up the mountain.
Indeed, Yang Xue didn’t plan on going up the mountain with the Chief and the others. She wanted to secure a good location first. After waiting for a while, Yang Xue felt as if she had forgotten something.
“What did I forget?” she murmured. No matter how hard she thought, she couldn’t remember.
It wasn’t until Yang Lao-san returned and they reached the foot of the mountain that it suddenly hit her: Zhao Zhaodi was still tied up and left in that dilapidated courtyard in the village!
Slapping her forehead, Yang Xue muttered helplessly, “Oh no.”
She said “oh no,” but in her heart, she didn’t feel bad at all. She had forgotten to let Zhao Zhaodi go, so now it was down to luck. If Zhao Zhaodi was lucky, she could break free from the vines and go home; if not, she would just lie in that ruined courtyard and be swept away by the flood.
“Sister, what’s ‘oh no’?” Yang Yu looked up at her curiously.
Yang Yu and Yang Tian were in high spirits. The thought of never being beaten or scolded again made them want to sing while they walked, though they didn’t know any actual tunes.
“Nothing.”
While Yang Xue was wondering if Zhao Zhaodi would be lucky enough to escape or be washed away, inside a certain desolate courtyard—one devoid of any human presence and filled only with a chilling, eerie atmosphere—Zhao Zhaodi slowly woke up.
She opened her eyes groggily to see layers of leaves, tangled branches, and bits of sunlight peeking through the gaps. This gave her a huge fright, and her blurry eyes snapped wide open. After a dizzy spell, she saw her surroundings clearly, and panic seized her heart.
Where was she? How did she end up in such a ghostly place? Feeling something wet beneath her, she looked down in terror only to see it was just moss, which allowed her to breathe a small sigh of relief.
She remembered that the last thing she knew before losing consciousness was being hit by that brat, Yang Xue. That rebellious little wretch! How dared she hit her and dump her in this godforsaken place? Once she got back, she would beat that disobedient brat to death.
“Yang Xue! You little brat! Let me go right now, or I’ll kill you!”
The surroundings remained silent; only her own voice echoed back.
“Yang Xue! You brat! Come out here! Stop playing tricks!”
Still silent. Zhao Zhaodi was truly panicked now; she didn’t even know where she was. “Is anyone there? Help! Help!”
Yang Xue had specifically chosen a secluded corner. Furthermore, the villagers were all busy packing or reinforcing their homes. Those not planning to head to the mountains were either lying at home or working in the fields; no one would wander near this abandoned property. So, no matter how much Zhao Zhaodi screamed, no one answered.
With no response and terrified to the extreme, Zhao Zhaodi began to struggle violently. She had considerable strength, and since she was tied with vines that had become brittle after losing their moisture, her struggling eventually caused them to loosen. Overjoyed, she worked even harder.
After finally breaking free, Zhao Zhaodi collapsed from exhaustion. However, she didn’t dare stay in this creepy place for long; it was far too eerie.
When she finally ran out, she realized she was still in the village. Seeing the familiar environment, she let out a massive sigh of relief. She had thought that Yang Xue had sold her off to some horrible place. As long as she was still in the village, it was fine.
Zhao Zhaodi hurried toward home. Once she returned, she was going to make Yang Xue pay.
Along the way, however, she noticed something unusual. The villagers seemed to be in a great hurry, their faces filled with worry, and many households were busy reinforcing their roofs and walls. She found their behavior strange, but she was in no mood to investigate. She was filled with a single-minded rage, waiting to unleash it on Yang Xue.
When she got back, she would tell Old Man Yang and Old Man Wang everything Yang Xue had done. This time, even if Yang Xue didn’t die, she would certainly lose a layer of skin.
