This Alpha Is So Devoted to His Wife - Chapter 1
This is the open house for the new student class at Saint Liddun International School’s affiliated kindergarten.
Saint Liddun is a 15-year, K-12 integrated private international school, a century-old institution with a reputation as a cradle for world-renowned universities. Each class is capped at 20 students, and all courses are customized to provide a holistic and elite education.
The expansive lawn is an open-air children’s buffet area, and beyond it is the outdoor playground, featuring a castle-like slide that instantly captivates many children. Parents and kids are already streaming in to explore.
A pair of beautiful fraternal twins quickly draws the attention of many parents.
The taller one is the older brother, wearing blue overalls. He has a calm expression on his face, possessing a composure that seems beyond his three years of age.
Behind him, the smaller brother, who is as pretty as a doll in light yellow overalls, follows.
Today’s parent-child experience class, a precursor to entering the junior class, is designed to give the children a taste of the kindergarten’s fun activities, spark their interest, and reduce their anxiety about a new environment.
Duan Yu Luo, who is a little tyrant at home, becomes shy in front of so many kids. He hides behind his brother, Luo Yu Duan, pulling on the dinosaur tail attached to his brother’s overalls.
“Zhu, there are so many kids. I’m scared,” Duan Yu Luo says with a furrowed brow and a soft, childlike voice, calling his brother by his nickname.
His brother’s nickname is “Piggy” (Zhu Zhu), and his is “Baby” (Zai Zai).
“There are too many people. Call me ‘Ge Ge’ (older brother),” the older brother, Luo Yu Duan, says calmly. He scans the kindergarten’s surroundings like a little adult, sizing up the area with a serious face.
Duan Yu Luo whispers, “Ge Ge, I’m scared.”
“What’s there to be afraid of?” Luo Yu Duan turns sideways and offers his hand to his brother. “Hold my hand. Your brother will protect you.”
Duan Yu Luo immediately grabs his brother’s hand, instantly feeling a surge of strength and courage. His little back straightens, and the dinosaur tail on his overalls wags slightly. His rosy face beams brightly as he says, “Then you can’t let go of my hand, okay? Or I’ll be scared.”
Luo Yu Duan: “…” Who was it that beat him up so ferociously last night? He doesn’t believe this little bully is scared at all.
While the parents and teachers are talking, the children are having their own social time.
Duan Yu Luo, who was dutifully pulling on his brother’s dinosaur tail, soon gets distracted by the slide next to them. His grandpa’s house has a huge playground, but the one at the kindergarten seems even bigger and cooler.
“Duan Yu Luo!” his brother, Luo Yu Duan, shouts as he sees him let go and run toward the slide. “Don’t run off!”
“I just want to play on the slide for a bit,” Duan Yu Luo stops obediently when he hears his brother’s call. He touches the tunnel entrance under the slide and looks back at his brother, promising in a milky voice, “I’ll just play here. I won’t run far.”
Luo Yu Duan looks at his brother’s eager face and finally relents. “Alright. But when I call you, you have to come out.”
“Okay, Piggy.”
“Say it again.”
“Okay, Ge Ge.”
“Go play.”
Duan Yu Luo bends down to enter the tunnel beneath the slide. As he’s about to crawl in with his butt sticking out, he sees another child hiding inside, wearing a baseball cap and hugging his knees, who seems to be crying. The child looks unapproachable.
Duan Yu Luo, a homebody bully, quietly backs out of the tunnel, deciding against a social interaction.
I’d better not go over there. Let him cry.
Just as his butt is halfway out of the slide tunnel, the child inside looks up and quickly crawls toward him. Startled, Duan Yu Luo falls backward, landing on the ground. He’s about to cry, but the tears stop abruptly when he sees the boy in the baseball cap crawl out of the tunnel and stop in front of him.
“Why are you running!”
Duan Yu Luo, who was rubbing his sore backside and about to cry, forgets about the pain. He stares at the boy in front of him, his tears now gone.
Huh? What is he saying?
Under the baseball cap, he sees the boy’s face looks different from the other children. His skin is fair, his eyes are a deep blue like the ocean, and he’s quite handsome. He doesn’t seem to be from their country.
Why am I a Buddha?
How can this handsome boy say something I can’t understand?
Curious, he reaches out to take the boy’s hat off, but the boy catches his hand.
“Don’t touch me.” The boy frowns, grabbing the “girl’s” hand to stop him from touching his hat. But when he looks at her face, he hesitates, realizing he might have spoken too loudly and was rude.
So, he releases the girl’s hand, turns away, pulls down his hat, and whispers, “Sorry.”
He also quickly wipes away his tears to maintain his image.
His grandma told him to be a little gentleman when he’s outside.
“What’s ‘dong’?” Duan Yu Luo asks in a confused, milky voice, seeing the boy pull away from him so fiercely. “‘Dong’ as in freezing? It’s so hot today! Why are you crying? Are you lost?”
Torn between his social anxiety and his appreciation for good looks, “Baby” decides to compromise with the latter, and his social anxiety suddenly vanishes.
The boy realizes the girl doesn’t understand him and can only make out a few Chinese words. He looks frustrated, pulls down his hat, and mutters, “Boring.”
“Huh? What’s ‘bo’?” Duan Yu Luo is at an age where he’s curious about everything. He crawls back into the tunnel and kneels in front of the boy, waving his hand. “Hello?”
The boy is surprised to hear “hello.” He looks at the girl in front of him. “Do you speak English?”
Duan Yu Luo thinks seriously. This must be English. But he doesn’t know how to speak it. He remembers his dad once told him that if he doesn’t know, saying “yes” or “okay” is probably fine.
“Yes!” He nods his little head vigorously.
“Are you a girl?”
Duan Yu Luo’s expression changes. Dog? How could he be a dog? He turns his head angrily and crawls out, not wanting to play with this blue-eyed boy who just called him a dog.
The boy, seeing Duan Yu Luo get angry, looks confused. What happened? Is he not a girl, but a boy? But can a boy be that pretty? Feeling apologetic, he quickly crawls out of the tunnel.
He runs up and grabs Duan Yu Luo’s hand.
“Sorry.” The boy takes off his hat, his face full of apology. He looks at the beautiful, angry boy glaring at him. Okay, I must have upset him.
What should I do? I need to coax him.
Duan Yu Luo looks resentfully at the boy. What is he saying now? I really don’t understand. He says in a fierce, baby voice, “You’re rude! Calling someone a dog is very rude! Let’s pretend we never met! Bye!”
He puffs up his cheeks and turns to leave.
Seriously, why would he call me a dog?
The boy has no idea what he did wrong, but seeing the other boy’s anger makes him feel bad. In Germany, his grandma taught him that if he makes someone angry or uncomfortable, he has to apologize; otherwise, it’s rude.
He thinks about what his dad does and says to his mom when he makes her angry. The one Chinese phrase he remembers most clearly comes to mind.
He quickly steps forward, puts his arms around the boy who is half a head shorter than him, and kisses his cheek. He says in broken Chinese, “Don’t be angry. I love you. Baby, here’s a kiss.”
Then he takes a lollipop from his pocket and hands it to him.
Duan Yu Luo stops. His eyes are immediately drawn to the lollipop.
A child’s anger comes and goes quickly. He was called “baby” and kissed, and now there’s candy. He feels a little shy, but his hand moves faster than his thoughts.
He takes the lollipop and, out of curiosity, smells it to see the flavor. His eyes light up. “Strawberry!”
Seeing that Duan Yu Luo is no longer angry, the boy feels a little better. He offers the hat in his hand to the boy and puts it on his head, saying in his broken Chinese, “We, friends?”
Duan Yu Luo sees the boy give him candy, put a hat on his head, and ask to be friends. He tilts his head in thought, then nods. “Okay!”
The boy is happy when he nods. “OK?”
Duan Yu Luo lowers his head, engrossed in unwrapping the lollipop. As he unwraps, he says, “OK, OK!”
The boy sees that he’s having trouble opening the wrapper, so he helps him.
Duan Yu Luo says sweetly, “Thank you,” when the boy helps him.
The boy understands. His ears turn red. He glances at Duan Yu Luo again, seeing him quietly eating the candy, and thinks to himself, So cute.
He then rushes to introduce himself in broken Chinese: “Wo, wo, Lu Xing He.”
Duan Yu Luo bites his lollipop. His eyes light up. “Is your name Lu Xing He?”
Lu Xing He nods, relieved that he understood. “Yes!”
Duan Yu Luo pats his little chest. “My name is Duan Yu Luo. You can call me my nickname, Zai Zai.”
Lu Xing He can mostly understand Chinese. “Your name is Duan Yu Luo? Zai Zai?”
“It’s Zai Zai!” Duan Yu Luo points his lollipop at his own mouth, correcting him with a straight face. “Look at my mouth. Zai~ Zai.”
“Zai Zai?” Lu Xing He watches Duan Yu Luo’s mouth, trying his best to learn the pronunciation.
“Oh, it’s Zai Zai!”
“…Zai Zai?” Lu Xing He tries again.
Duan Yu Luo looks conflicted, then sighs, unable to resist poking him with the lollipop. “You’re so silly.”
Lu Xing He seems to understand the meaning of that phrase. His dad often says it to his mom at home, and then his mom kisses him, and she smiles shyly. So it must not be a bad thing to say. It must be a good thing.
He blushes, touches his ear, and says shyly in broken Chinese, “Zai Zai, thank you.”
Duan Yu Luo bites his candy. “?”
He stares at Lu Xing He with a look of confusion. This guy really must be a simpleton.
He can’t help but feel tickled by the situation. He takes the candy out of his mouth, throws his head back, and laughs joyfully. “You’re so funny!”
The sun shines brightly on the slide, a few rays landing on Duan Yu Luo, who is in his little dinosaur outfit. His skin looks fair and flawless, and he is as cute as a little sculpture.
He’s so amused that he trips over his own feet.
Lu Xing He immediately helps him up and stares at the boy with the lollipop in his mouth and his eyes crinkled like crescent moons. He’s completely captivated.
He was very reluctant to come to China and this kindergarten he disliked so much. Just a moment ago, many kids told him he looked strange and that his eyes were blue.
But this boy in front of him doesn’t look at him differently just because he’s mixed-race. And…
He looks so much like a girl, like a doll.
Maybe I don’t have to hate this kindergarten after all. I’ll stay here and play with this doll.
“Go to my…” Lu Xing He racks his brain for a long time. “Go to my house?”
“Huh?” Duan Yu Luo is biting his lollipop, looking at Lu Xing He in confusion. “What did you say?”
Lu Xing He sees his blank expression and thinks, How can someone so dumbfounded be so cute? He wants to pinch his cheeks. Just as he lifts his hand, a large hand beats him to it, grabbing his.
“Bennett.”
Lu Xing He looks up to see his dad, Clemens. “Daddy.”
Clemens is surprised to see his son gave away his favorite hat. He also heard his son invite a new friend to their house. He pulls up his trousers and squats down to be at eye level with Lu Xing He. “Bennett, you want to invite this friend to our house?”
This surprises him. His son had been pouting all morning, and now he’s giving away his favorite hat and inviting a friend over.
Lu Xing He is used to his parents speaking a mix of Chinese and English, so he understands the gist of it with a little English. He nods. “Yes.”
Duan Yu Luo is still chewing his lollipop, curiously looking at the tall man and Lu Xing He. They both have blue eyes! This must be Lu Xing He’s dad.
“Little one, what’s your name?” After talking with his son, Clemens turns to the handsome boy, who looks familiar.
“My name is Duan Yu Luo!” Duan Yu Luo immediately takes the lollipop out of his mouth and hides it behind his back, introducing himself confidently. He puts his hands by his sides and bows politely to Clemens. “Hello, sir~”
Clemens is so charmed by the little boy that he laughs. “So cute. No wonder my son gave you his favorite hat.”
Duan Yu Luo lifts both hands to cover the hat on his head, looking at Lu Xing He. “Is this your favorite hat?”
Lu Xing He doesn’t move his gaze, his eyes fixed on the little expressions on Duan Yu Luo’s face.
He really is like a pretty doll.
“Yes, it is. It’s his favorite hat. He sleeps with it every night and wears it everywhere he goes.” Clemens notices his son staring at the little boy and can’t help but tease him. “Bennett, this hat is for your future wife.”
Lu Xing He immediately gets flustered, his ears turning red. He urgently waves his hands, telling his dad to stop.
Clemens laughs at his son’s shyness. He’s rarely seen him like this. He pats his son’s shoulder and says, “Take it easy” to help him relax. Then he turns to Duan Yu Luo.
“Little one, our Bennett is of mixed-race. Our family used to live in Germany, so he’s not very familiar with this place and is a little scared. Can you help me out by looking after him in kindergarten? He really likes you.”
Duan Yu Luo’s eyes sparkle when he hears this. “He likes me?”
“Yes, he gave you his favorite hat. It’s his most precious treasure.” Clemens feels a tug on his clothes and knows his son is getting impatient. “So Bennett wants to invite you over to play. Would you like to come?”
Duan Yu Luo hesitates. He can be friends, but he can’t just go to a stranger’s house. What if they sell him? He licks his lollipop, completely forgetting that he shouldn’t take candy from strangers either.
Seeing Duan Yu Luo hesitate, Lu Xing He tugs on his dad’s clothes and quietly asks for his help again. “Daddy, back me up.”
Clemens is amused by his son’s anxiousness. This is a rare sight. He gently pats his son’s back, teaches him a couple of Chinese phrases, and gestures for him to speak for himself.
Duan Yu Luo, not knowing what they are whispering about, eats his candy and looks down at his shoes. He decides he still can’t go to their house. His dad told him he could be tricked. Just as he says “bye-bye” and tries to leave, his hand is suddenly grabbed.
“Ultraman!”
Duan Yu Luo stops and turns his head, thinking he misheard. “Ultraman?”
Lu Xing He realizes his accent is too thick. “Yes, Ultraman. I have many at my house. I’ll give them all to you if you come home with me.”
Duan Yu Luo’s eyes instantly light up. He takes the lollipop out of his mouth. “Wow, lots of Ultraman?!”
“Yes.”
“Let’s go, let’s go!” Duan Yu Luo can’t wait. He grabs Lu Xing He’s hand and starts pulling him away. “I’ll go home with you!”
