Chapter 10: The Feng Family
Called upon by her idol once again, Feng Sisi snapped to attention, looking as if she were about to give a Young Pioneer salute to show her respect. “Who doesn’t know you? You’re the one the International Miaodao Association invited multiple times but could never get! A legend who’s seen but never caught, winning first place at the martial arts convention every single year. I remember the first time I saw your match, Idol—that scene was heart-stopping! Your majestic presence, your fluid movements…”
Listening to Feng Sisi’s machine-gun-fire speech, Teng Xi felt a headache coming on. She turned to Yao Zhi. “Is she always this…” Talkative?
Yao Zhi’s mouth twitched, looking like a parent whose child was making a scene in public but was too fond of them to scold. She could only call out helplessly, “Sisi.”
Only then did Feng Sisi stop her non-stop chatter. She blinked her blue eyes at Teng Xi, her metaphorical tail wagging happily behind her.
Teng Xi understood the gist of it: Feng Sisi’s knowledge of her was limited to her public persona. It seemed a trip to Area A was still necessary.
“I’m also planning to go to Area A to find a friend.” Though she wasn’t sure if Shi Yun counted as a friend yet, Teng Xi turned to Xie Jinbing to consult her opinion.
Xie Jinbing locked eyes with her and opened her mouth, only to remember she couldn’t make a sound. She frowned in annoyance.
In truth, her personality wasn’t particularly “kind.” Growing up in an orphanage, she hadn’t learned how to act cute to please elders; she had only learned to use her fists to resist bullies. It wasn’t until she met Teng Xi that a ray of sunlight entered her world, teaching her that someone could smile so beautifully. To put it bluntly, the old Teng Xi was the sun in Xie Jinbing’s life. One could imagine the despair she felt when Teng Xi withdrew from that relationship.
“Sister Xie should come with us too,” a familiar voice rang in her ear. A familiar scent enveloped Xie Jinbing as Teng Xi hooked an arm around her neck, half-hugging her like a close buddy. “I’ll protect you.”
By the time Xie Jinbing reacted, they were pressed together. The other woman’s warm breath brushed against her brow, making it itch. Looking at that smile that revealed two small tiger teeth, Xie Jinbing nodded as if possessed.
With their goals aligned, things became easier to manage.
The group did a quick cleanup, clearing a space among the fallen zombies—though they couldn’t help but marvel at Xie Jinbing’s combat prowess for capturing this room single-handedly. They sat in a circle with Teng Xi’s small map spread in the center.
“We are currently in Building 1 of Area C. Behind us is the library, and behind the library is the river. Once we cross the river, we’re in Area A. The hospital isn’t open-access, so to get to Area A, we have to go through the library and the river,” Teng Xi pointed at the map; she had already studied the route thoroughly. “Next is open floor for comments.”
Feng Sisi sat upright, her left hand flat and her right arm bent, elbow resting on the back of her left hand—a standard classroom hand-raising posture.
“Comrade Xiao Feng, please speak.”
“Idol, how do we get to the library?” Feng Sisi asked, her eyes full of stars.
Si Qinghan reached her limit. Without another word, she smacked Feng Sisi on the head. “Missy, can you act normal for once? If your parents saw the dignified Eldest Daughter of the Feng Family acting like this, they’d die of anger.”
Feng Sisi’s face instantly slumped. “I haven’t ruined the family reputation. Can’t I just like the Miaodao?”
“The Feng Family?” Teng Xi couldn’t find a single trace of this name in her memories, though Xie Jinbing finally gave Feng Sisi a proper look.
Si Qinghan looked incredulous. “You don’t know?”
Instead, it was Feng Sisi who blushed, appearing embarrassed to show off in front of her idol. “You dead fox, what do you know? My idol is devoted to martial arts and doesn’t bother with worldly affairs.”
Xie Jinbing, who knew Teng Xi’s true nature, glanced at her: Her? Worldly affairs are usually caused by her.
Yao Zhi intervened at the right moment. “The Feng Family is an internationally famous commercial empire, and Sisi is the only daughter. She saw your match in middle school and became obsessed with martial arts. However, she has a heart condition, and her family is very against it. If you ever meet her family, remember to stay far away—they’d love to skin you alive.”
The group was smart enough not to mention whether their families were still safe in the apocalypse; it was as if as long as they didn’t speak of it, hope remained.
Teng Xi, who had unintentionally led someone astray, rubbed her nose. For the first time, she felt a bit embarrassed and quickly changed the subject. “Sister Xie is a doctor at this hospital; she should be more familiar with it than us.”
Four hopeful gazes converged on Xie Jinbing.
Xie Jinbing’s heart skipped a beat. For the first time, people were placing their hope in her—not for punishment after a mistake, nor out of greedy exploitation, but with a sincere desire to trust her.
She steadied her mind, pulled a pen from her pocket, and drew a circle to the northwest of the library, writing one words: GARAGE.
“There’s an underground garage there?” Teng Xi understood instantly and received a nod in confirmation.
Seeming to find handwriting too slow, Xie Jinbing pulled out the phone, which now had 13% battery.
“The garage has few people and contains a stairwell leading into the library interior.”
Indeed, the outbreak happened during morning commute hours; the garage wouldn’t be very crowded.
“Better to leave now. The zombies downstairs were lured away by the explosion; no zombies will wander back to this stretch for a while.”
Everyone nodded in agreement. To get to the underground garage, the best path was to descend from the west side of the building—the rooms opposite them. That side was closer to the library and would avoid the horde flowing out from the library entrance.
Having made up their minds, they began packing, stuffing everything edible from the kitchen into Si Qinghan’s hiking pack. As the last loaf of bread went in, Teng Xi pressed down hard and prepared to shove a whetstone inside.
Si Qinghan’s eyelid jumped. “Comrade Teng Xi, you’re crossing the line. It’s easy for you to say since you aren’t carrying this bag! What use is a whetstone?!”
Teng Xi weighed the stone in her hand and said shamelessly, “To sharpen the blade. Or I can use it as a weapon to give a zombie a ‘brick’ to the face.”
Teng Xi quickly shoved the whetstone in and zipped it up. She tried to lift the bag and nearly failed. She looked at Si Qinghan uncertainly.
The “Monster Strength Girl” hummed, easily swung the pack onto her back, and didn’t forget a mocking remark: “Weakling.”
The defeated Teng Xi could only hug her Miaodao tightly and say to Feng Sisi, “Student Sisi, let me borrow this sword for a bit longer.”
Feng Sisi, who was organizing her gear, looked up in confusion. “Huh? Isn’t this sword originally yours? Oh, right, I forgot you sold it to the Xi family. But I got it back for you! Your Miaodao—I shall guard it!”
She finished with what she thought was a cool pose, conveniently ignoring the fact that she hadn’t “retrieved” the sword, but “stolen” it.
But then again, no one from the Xi family was left after the outbreak; they only cared about fleeing, not the life or death of the blade. Feng Sisi felt perfectly justified.
Teng Xi wiped away a non-existent tear, putting on a moved expression for her fan.
Suddenly, the long sword in her hand was “accidentally” kicked hard, nearly flying out of her grip.
Teng Xi looked at Xie Jinbing walking past. The doctor turned around with a look of feigned shock, glancing from the sword to the foot that had just kicked it, her face full of “apology.”
Teng Xi: “…” Sister, your facial expression management is terrible. I literally saw you smiling.
