The World-Weary Kitty Is Transformed Into A Weak And Sickly Beta - Chapter 5
In the darkness, the System broke down once again.
[What the meow are you doing? You’re a human now, why are you squatting in a flowerbed?]
Chu Fan pressed his index finger to his lips and said coldly, “Shh, don’t talk. I am completing a very important mission.”
996 rolled its eyes wildly, watching as Chu Fan ducked behind another tree.
[You guy… aren’t you just trying to secretly stalk my Male Lead so you can get his address?]
[Can’t you just ask him directly?]
Hiding behind a thick tree trunk, Chu Fan spoke slowly: “What do you mean your Male Lead? This is my Master. You’ve let my Master suffer so much, let me tell you, I won’t let you have your way.”
“By the way, you have to help me hide my tracks. If Master finds out, my character persona will collapse.”
996 hadn’t expected this cat to suddenly become so clever and turn the tables on him. It could only respond indignantly:
[If you get caught, I’ll shock you!!]
Chu Fan didn’t care. Persistent and stealthy, he followed Chi Yan back into a dilapidated old alleyway. Even though 996 was reluctant, it did its best to muffle Chu Fan’s movements so Chi Yan wouldn’t notice. After all, if Chu Fan’s persona collapsed, it wouldn’t benefit the System either.
Walking into the old alley, Chi Yan stopped at some point and stood for a long time in a worn-out lane filled with clutter. He then stepped inside. A moment later, a weak but fiercely aggressive cat meow echoed from within.
Chu Fan recognized it. That little guy was saying: “Don’t come over here! Come any closer and I’ll bite you!”
Chu Fan hurried forward a few steps and poked his head out to look.
Ignoring the cat’s high-arched tail and obvious combat stance, Chi Yan reached out to touch it. He skillfully evaded the kitten’s sharp teeth and stroked its back. After petting it for a while, he suddenly stopped as if remembering something, stood up, and walked out of the lane.
Hiding in the shadows, Chu Fan’s molars were nearly grinding to dust.
Master hasn’t even petted me yet, but he petted another cat first.
Hmph!
The cat was angry. How could that cat’s fur even compare to his? His own fur was black and shiny, meticulously maintained at all times.
Once Chi Yan had walked a bit further away, Chu Fan, unable to contain his spite, ran into the lane and meowed at the cat that had stolen his Master’s affection: “Meow, meow meow.”
You guy, don’t get smug too early. Master still likes me the most!!
The kitten: “…” What are these people doing? Strange two-legged beasts.
After threatening it for a while, Chu Fan looked at the kitten, its fur was so dry it was almost knotted, and it was smaller and weaker than other cats its age. He ultimately couldn’t bear it.
He softened his voice: “Darn kitten, you’re way too small. You’re embarrassing us cats.”
“Meow, meow…” Call me Boss, and I’ll cover you.
The kitten cowered, losing its previous ferocity, seemingly sensing something different about Chu Fan. It replied: “Meow-wu.” Boss.
Satisfied, Chu Fan muttered to himself, “Fine, a cat’s word is his bond. Since you called me Boss, I can’t let it be for nothing. Wait for me, next time I’ll bring you a big bag of cat food and feed you until your belly is round.”
“Sigh, it’s not that I don’t want to give you chips or chocolate. We’re different. I’m a human now so I can barely eat a little, but you’re a cat, you’ll get sick if you eat that.”
The kitten: “Meow?” What are you saying? I don’t understand.
Chu Fan reached out and patted it: “Meow meow!” I have to go. Don’t let anyone bully you. I’ll come find you next time.
The kitten nodded blindly, watching this “two-legged beast” who could speak the cat language suddenly dash away.
996 mocked him: [Minding everyone’s business but your own.]
Chu Fan ignored it. He closed his eyes, sniffing the air, then opened them and chased to the right without hesitation.
[Are you a dog? You can find the Male Lead just by smelling him?]
As Chu Fan identified the direction, he replied: “Why are you insulting cats? Who’s a dog? As a cat who lived for a thousand years, I have at least this much skill.”
[You are currently just an ordinary Beta! Don’t use cheats, okay? Let’s be normal. Cat demons don’t exist in this world.]
Chu Fan suddenly asked: “Hey, let me ask you, is my coming to this world related to you?” Otherwise, why would he have been knocked out by an iron bar?
996 went silent, dodging the question. [Host, you’re so cool, running so fast!]
“That’s a really clumsy subject change. I’m not blaming you. If it weren’t for you, I’d still be in my old world waiting bitterly for my Master. Tell me the truth.”
996 thought to itself that it had accidentally done this clumsy cat a huge favor by helping him find his Master.
[Fine, I did it on purpose. The system showed that your probability of completing the mission was incredibly high, a staggering 100%.]
[If you weren’t somewhat useful, why would I bind myself to a cat that doesn’t understand human speech and could be mistaken for a monster at any moment?]
Chi Yan had already gone upstairs. The voice activated lights flickered on one by one, finally stopping at the fourth floor.
So, he lives on the fourth floor. Building 2, Unit 2, Floor 4.
Now that Chu Fan knew where Chi Yan lived, he had the leisure to say: “Hmph. If the task is still to do bad things and make Master suffer, I suggest you don’t count on me. There’s no way a cat would hurt its Master! Even if you shock me to death, I will never yield!”
[But you already promised me!!]
Chu Fan didn’t care: “I am the Little Tyrant of Yunshui Street. What I’m best at is going back on my word.”
996 was practically driven to tears. If it weren’t for its low energy levels, it would have definitely changed hosts. This host was far too disobedient. For the sake of its performance review, it could only bow down.
[Wise Cat Lord, look, some of our missions aren’t that excessive…]
Chu Fan nodded: “I won’t make things difficult for you, I’m just telling you where my bottom line is. Didn’t I listen to you last time and go apologize to that bad guy?”
Before his voice could fade, a woman’s scream erupted from one of the rooms, sharp and filled with terror, followed by the sound of breaking glass.
Chu Fan heard it clearly. It came from the fourth floor. The same fourth floor where Chi Yan was.
Did something happen?
Building 2, Unit 2, Room 401.
The neighbors had long since grown accustomed to such arguments. They used to discuss it, how the man of the house loved to drink and loved to hit people when he was drunk. He hit his wife, his son, and sometimes even his own mother.
The neighbors had tried to intervene a few times, but it was useless, they only ended up getting cursed at. Supposedly, the police had been called, but that was useless too, and eventually, things were just left alone.
Over time, no one bothered anymore. When it was mentioned, people just said that family was cursed with eight lifetimes of bad luck. Later, everyone became annoyed and rarely mentioned it, feeling only that it was their own misfortune to be neighbors with such a person.
The child of this family had been born with high expectations from his father, yet he was only a low-level F-grade Alpha.
Chi Yan thought to himself: This time, the argument and the beating are still without reason.
The man he refused to call “Father” Chi Lu, a D-grade Alpha, was using his brute strength to violently throw his child, the one who failed to meet his expectations, to the floor.
Chi Yan thought: He must have been drinking again.
Only when he drank would he remember his life’s failures and his F-grade Alpha son, and only then would he become exceptionally furious. He felt resentment toward everything. He hated the unfairness of fate, hated that he hadn’t married a high-grade Omega, and hated that he had sired a low-grade Alpha.
But he never hated himself.
Chi Yan sneered. How could he hate himself? He probably thought he was the most perfect person in the world, likely fantasizing every day that a D-grade Alpha could be worthy of an S-grade Omega.
It was laughable.
He endured it all passively. Chi Yan had come back on purpose, he knew that every Wednesday, Chi Lu would go out to drink and come home dead drunk. If he didn’t come back, the ones being beaten would be his mother and his grandmother, who was the kindest to him.
Blood spilled from the corner of Chi Yan’s mouth, trailing down his cheek to his earlobe. The floor was stained with blood. His head was lifted and then slammed down hard, he saw stars, and the metallic taste of blood clogged his throat, making it difficult to breathe.
He thought: Not enough. I’m still not strong enough. And… not ruthless enough.
He had had countless opportunities to kill Chi Lu, but he had never acted. Perhaps it was because someone had told him when he was little to stay alive, to live well.
Unfortunately, in this house, all compromise was merely cowardice.
Inside the room, Lin Nan covered her mother-in-law’s ears, watching as tears flowed from the elderly woman’s cloudy eyes. They both knew that Xiao Yan had come back for them, but if they went out now, it would only add chaos to chaos. Xiao Yan would have to protect them and would be beaten even more severely.
Qin Jing’s eyes held uncontrollable anxiety as she said with difficulty, “I… I have to go out. I have to protect my Xiao Yan!”
Lin Nan trembled: “No, don’t go out. We are too weak; we can’t beat him.” “Just wait a bit longer. Soon… soon he’ll stop. He’ll run out of strength.”
Chi Yan was almost losing consciousness. The gap between their two grades left him with no power to fight back. He had never been so aware of his own insignificance, of his own weakness.
Fists fell one after another. Muffled groans escaped his lips.
Outside the building, Chu Fan felt an uneasy premonition. He observed for a moment and then, without hesitation, began to climb the exterior, using the ground-floor pipes and balconies to ascend level by level.
996 was utterly impressed.
[Do you realize you’re a Young Master? Look at you, you don’t look like a Young Master, you look like a thief!]
[Why are you grabbing people’s window sills? Let go! You’re just a Beta with no strength, and there are security bars up there. Do you think you can just get in once you reach the window?]
Chu Fan completely ignored it. His only sensation was how weak the human body was. Not only did his arms lack strength, but his legs couldn’t stretch far enough. If he were his old self, he could climb eighteen floors without breaking a sweat.
A person on the third floor, unable to sleep because of the noise upstairs, came out for a glass of water only to see a dark shadow drift past the window.
Innocent bystander: “!!!” What was that?!
He stared out the window for a while, but seeing nothing, he assumed he was hallucinating from the noise upstairs. He took a sip of water and went back to plug his ears and sleep.
Chu Fan, standing on a nearby pipe, had almost been discovered and chased away by a security guard.
[Stop climbing, or I’ll shock you!]
“Shock me if you want. I’m definitely going up this time.”
996 actually really wanted to shock him, but the host’s current position was too dangerous. One shock and he’d likely say goodbye to the mortal realm. It could only give up in regret.
When Chu Fan finally climbed up, he saw a man pinning his Master down. He didn’t know how long the beating had been going on, but a glass cup in the man’s hand was about to be smashed down.
Chu Fan: “!!!” My Master!
996: “!!!” Its Male Lead!
The security bars were pulled out of shape by a strange, eerie force. Chu Fan tilted his body, opened the inner glass window, jumped inside, grabbed a chair nearby, and slammed it down with all his might.
“You bastard, let go of him!”
