- The Woman I Was Flirting With Turned Out To Be A Chaebol Heiress
- Chapter 44 - Early Morning at Mt. Tengou
Why did it end up like this?
“I do.”
“Jiang Ji!! Run!!”
The glaring red stained the white snow, then bit by bit was covered by fresh snow.
A very familiar scene years ago, Wuzhi cutting off her husband’s head had already left the deepest impression in Jiang Ji’s mind, so much so that the moment she fell, she immediately recalled the image of that head rolling at her feet.
But this time, was she going to be the one to die?
At this moment, it felt as if all her senses were stripped away, even her skin went numb, only her brain was still stiffly running.
Why did it come to this?
Happiness was already so close.
The scene in front of her played like a broken TV, stuttering and eerily repeating the same content one moment, it was Nian Nian saying “I do,” the next moment, it turned into her own frantic and desperate screams.
Jiang Ji couldn’t hear anything. She was stunned, staring at the woman in front of her.
Nian Nian, her Nian Nian was crying. She wanted to wipe away her tears, but no matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t lift that heavy arm.
The snow fell so fast, as if in an instant it buried Jiang Ji. She barely felt the cold, only knew the scene became clear then blurry.
More memories surged up, overlapping people and events, forming a bizarre dream.
I don’t want to die…
Nian Nian would be sad.
She really still hated winter.
The red cable car slowly ascended. At six in the morning on Mt. Tengou, it looked especially eerie. The red hanging in the pitch-black sky seemed like it had pierced a hole in the void.
“So beautiful!”
Dai pressed her face against the window, looking at the snowy night scenery outside the cable car, the sky just barely lightening and dyeing the mountain in deep blue. The girl’s voice sounded like a normal teenager’s wonder.
“No wonder sister wanted to come here and date the teacher. It really is romantic. I regret not coming here sooner.”
If you ignored Li Nianyi curled up on the ground beside her, tied up like a dying fish on the shore, the scene could have been warmer.
“Hm? Teacher, why aren’t you saying anything?”
Dai squatted in front of Li Nianyi, carefully inspecting her, then suddenly realized, “Sorry, sorry, I forgot I taped your mouth shut.”
Then with a sudden “snap,” she roughly tore off the transparent tape from Li Nianyi’s mouth.
It hurt so much!!
Li Nianyi bit the inside of her cheek hard to keep from crying out.
This crazy girl!
She had just gotten thirsty in the middle of the night and opened the door to get water, only to be silenced and drugged by someone dressed as a waiter, and taken away silently.
Did Dai’s subordinates all train as waiters? Or was the group-buy waiter uniform just convenient to reuse? How come this trick had been used again and again?
On the cable car, Li Nianyi was even frozen awake! She was still in her pajamas, brought here exactly like that. Though the pajamas were cotton, they were indoor wear too thin for the freezing mountain.
Li Nianyi guessed that the kid must have drugged Jiang Ji too, otherwise with Jiang Ji’s light sleep she wouldn’t have stayed unconscious.
“How about now? Can you talk to me?”
The smiling girl looked down on Li Nianyi. She was dressed warmly a vintage black coat covering her neck, hat and gloves not like a kidnapper, more like a mysterious girl out of an old Showa-era movie.
“Dai, I don’t quite understand. I never conflicted with you before. Why did you suddenly kidnap me?”
It was cold, really cold, and Li Nianyi felt her voice trembling, but she forced herself to stay calm.
“It’s all the teacher’s fault.”
The girl stood up, stepping back and sitting on the seat.
“You quit your tutoring job without my permission. We were supposed to have class yesterday, I waited and waited but you never came. Then I suddenly remembered, the teacher isn’t tutoring me anymore…”
She was right. Li Nianyi had handed her resignation to the butler Xiaozawa before winter break, basically to monitor Dai. She had wanted to escape, using schoolwork as an excuse.
Dai looked like an actress on stage, putting on a timely look of disappointment.
“But I miss the teacher so much, so I came to find you.”
With a clatter, the cable car stopped.
“We’re here!”
Dai excitedly grabbed Li Nianyi by the collar and dragged her off, ignoring the tiny scratches on Li Nianyi’s exposed skin.
Li Nianyi had no room to struggle; her body left a long dent in the pristine snow. The right side of her body felt icy dampness, and her skin hurt from the cold.
They took the cable car directly to the mountaintop. Dai dragged Li Nianyi to a perfect spot to overlook the buildings at the mountain’s foot.
“Such a pity, teacher’s first time seeing the sunrise at Mt. Tengou is with me. Sister will be so jealous!”
Dai laughed nervously, seeming to take great delight in ruining Jiang Ji’s good mood. Li Nianyi finally understood why Jiang Ji spoke so harshly about Dai.
She really was crazy.
“Dai, I don’t understand. What benefit do you get from attacking me like this?”
In other words, this behavior was basically handing evidence to the police. For Dai, who was being watched closely by the police, this was all harm and no benefit.
Li Nianyi tried to reason, but Dai didn’t answer directly. Instead, she stared at her so intensely that Li Nianyi felt chills down her spine. That gaze was creepy and sticky.
“Sister made me unhappy, so I have to take revenge. That’s only fair.”
Her tone was frank and cheerful, completely at odds with the hateful look she gave Li Nianyi.
“After thinking about it, the best tool for revenge is you, teacher. In this world, there’s probably no one more important to her than you.”
Li Nianyi had no retort. She could only pray the police would come quickly, and that both she and Jiang Ji would get out of here safely.
“Teacher, I know what you’re thinking.”
At this moment, Dai’s smile stretched unnaturally wide, sending chills down Li Nianyi’s back.
“The cops from the Metropolitan Police Department are tough, especially the new female officer—I hate her so much. She made me work so hard to avoid their surveillance. Although those tricks and false clues won’t fool them for long, well, that little time is enough for us to have a good chat.”
Dai took off her gloves and hat, and flopped beside Li Nianyi without a care for her image.
She began to ramble.
“Teacher, you know? I really, really, really hate my sister. Her existence just makes this family crowded.”
“You think she cherishes being part of your family?”
“Shut up!”
Suddenly, Dai got agitated, flipping over to lean on Li Nianyi’s head, eyes wide with disbelief. Luckily, Li Nianyi was used to it by now and ignored her sudden outburst.
“What’s there to complain about! The mother gave her everything, she should be grateful! Why does she always look so disgusted and unwilling?!”
“Dai, don’t you think you’re contradictory?”
“I said shut up! What do you know?”
“She caused me to get caught by the police, she made mother despise me. Mother won’t accept a daughter who’s in jail, a daughter with a stain on her record… It’s all her fault, all her fault, all her fault!”
“If that’s the case, then I’ll destroy her too! Without sister, I’ll be mother’s only daughter.”
Saying that, Dai laughed crazily again, her insane laughter echoing in the air so sharply it pierced Li Nianyi’s eardrums.
“It’s almost time. Teacher, what do you think sister will say to beg me not to kill you? I’m so looking forward to it!”
Li Nianyi kept praying that Jiang Ji wouldn’t come, wouldn’t come, but Dai’s trap was tailor-made for Jiang Ji, and no matter what, she would fall into it.
Her cheeks burned cold, Li Nianyi curled up tightly, not knowing how long had passed, maybe a century, yet dawn had still not fully come.
Suddenly, in the distance, she saw a small black dot moving towards her.
“Teacher, she’s here, much faster than I thought. I even left her a note so she wouldn’t get lost. I’m thoughtful, right?”
Li Nianyi was dragged up. Without Dai’s strength supporting her, she would have fallen.
Dai’s voice was full of glee, almost overjoyed.
“Sister, over here! Over here!”
She even waved at Jiang Ji.
Li Nianyi’s originally panicked heart strangely calmed when she saw Jiang Ji’s face.
She knew Jiang Ji hadn’t come alone; she could understand Jiang Ji’s reassuring eyes.
“I envy you so much. Even someone like sister can find her own meaning in life. Sister, you’re so happy already, why must you keep fighting with me? Why am I the only one not blessed?”
She didn’t know when, but a cold shining blade suddenly appeared pressed to Li Nianyi’s neck.
Jiang Ji unconsciously clenched her fists, her fingernails digging into her palms until they almost bled, but she was unaware, still trying hard to hide her emotions.
“Dai, this is just a grudge between you and me. If you want to take revenge, why not come at me directly?”
“Sounds like you have a point.”
Dai showed a thoughtful expression, suddenly took another small knife from her pocket, and tossed it in front of Jiang Ji:
“Then sister, show your sincerity first.”
