- Chapter 41 - The Storm is Coming
Li Nianyi was somewhat stunned as she looked at the empty doorway. Those people coordinated really well she hadn’t even fully reacted to the action-packed scene just now.
But then again, she hadn’t explicitly said that the USB drive left on the table was the item they were after, so why get so worked up?
Fortunately, there weren’t many people in the café, so it wouldn’t cause much disturbance.
Patting her wildly beating chest, she sat back down in her seat.
Thank heavens, the coffee hadn’t all spilled out just now. Li Nianyi took a light sip from the cup; it was still her favorite jasmine latte.
For a long time, Dai’s gaze had been fixed tightly on her and Jiang Ji. They couldn’t be sure if Dai had noticed that Jiang Ji had found the USB drive. Since that was uncertain, why not turn the tables and expose a flaw, leading her out into the open?
This was both a test and a declaration of war.
A person’s attention is always limited when the eyes focus on one place, they miss another.
Just like how they hadn’t noticed a face that had recently become very common on the internet the head of the Special Crimes Unit at the Metropolitan Police Department right there nearby. The few people left were all undercover agents she had arranged beforehand.
With a crisp clink as the cup was set down on the table, a long-haired woman in a suit pulled out a chair and sat beside Li Nianyi.
Li Nianyi casually slipped the item from her other pocket into that woman’s palm.
“I haven’t seen the contents, nor has Jiang Ji. We can’t guarantee that this is definitely useful. Now we hand it over to you. What happens next is up to you.”
This thing had troubled Li Nianyi for long enough. Now that she could finally get rid of these troubles, she had no curiosity to peek at what illegal or criminal acts Dai might have done she could just wait to see it in the news later.
“Ms. Li, you are indeed cautious in your actions,” the woman said admiringly, plugging the USB drive into her portable computer and backing up the videos one by one.
“Officer Boss, you flatter me. Securing evidence is one thing; I also wanted to test the extent of their surveillance.”
The woman chuckled; she noticed Li Nianyi’s unusual way of addressing her but didn’t correct her. Since Mu Yuan Kui chatted with her calling her “boss” all the time, Li Nianyi had started using the amusing title as well.
Li Nianyi shrugged helplessly. “Now we’re clear, but the situation doesn’t look optimistic.”
“If you have any trouble afterward, feel free to contact me.”
“Thanks a lot, officer.”
But now they had gotten the fake USB drive. If it really was damaged by the spilled coffee, they might mistakenly believe the evidence was destroyed and thus lower their guard.
“Let’s hope so.”
After saying goodbye to Officer Boss, Jiang Ji called soon after.
“Is everything over?”
“Mm.”
“I’m coming to pick you up.”
“Okay.”
Li Nianyi couldn’t help but smile.
She stepped to the roadside, cold wind rushing into her collar. She shrank her neck; the big temperature difference between inside and outside instantly chilled her.
Seeing a familiar figure far away, Li Nianyi waved vigorously despite the wind biting painfully at her skin.
Jiang Ji hurried over from afar and wrapped a scarf around Li Nianyi’s neck before saying anything. The vintage pure green scarf blocked all the biting cold; it was the same as the one Jiang Ji wore.
“I told you you wore too little today. Look, your hands are so cold.”
She pressed her cheek against Li Nianyi’s hand and then wrapped the icy hand in hers, warmth passing through layer by layer, even warming the heart.
“Oh my, whose girlfriend is so considerate?”
Li Nianyi dodged the question with a playful tone, hooking her arm around Jiang Ji’s and pulling her toward home.
Is it really over?
Clutching her uneasy chest, Li Nianyi couldn’t help but wonder.
“Jiang Ji.”
“Hmm?”
“If Dai finds out we tricked her, she’ll probably be really angry, right?”
“…From what I know of her, she’d probably want to shoot me right away.”
“Is it that serious? Sounds scary… but your tone is so funny.”
“Don’t worry, she won’t use the gun.”
“…Why are you dragging me into this joke?”
Li Nianyi tried to punch Jiang Ji’s back, but Jiang Ji dodged swiftly, leaving her to chase and fail, running a whole street. Li Nianyi was exhausted.
“You’re quick, and you can run so well. I think Dai’s gun wouldn’t be able to catch you.”
“Alright, alright, Nian Nian, I’m sorry. I won’t run anymore. You can hit me as much as you want.”
Jiang Ji laughed, begging, yet showing no sign of regret.
Li Nianyi felt Jiang Ji’s laughter was the most carefree she had ever heard—indeed, when doing bad things, people don’t feel tired.
“But speaking of which, what was on the stolen USB drive?”
Jiang Ji was curious.
Li Nianyi couldn’t help but laugh recalling it.
“Ahem… it’s mine, my undergraduate thesis.”
Jiang Ji’s face turned to a question mark.
“It’s just my old USB, full of undergrad PPTs and stuff. Important data was all backed up on the computer, so I barely used it after graduating. I just happened to find it while tidying up yesterday and it came in handy.”
If the USB wasn’t damaged, Jiang Ji could hardly imagine how terrifying it would be for Dai to open it.
“Honestly, aren’t you worried Dai will go crazy? What we did today was basically a provocation.”
Li Nianyi squeezed Jiang Ji’s fingers.
There was silence for a few seconds before Jiang Ji spoke.
“I am worried, but I don’t think we have any other choice… Since the provocation is done, with the police involved, maybe it’ll go smoothly. We don’t have to worry much; we can just visit from prison later.”
Jiang Ji rarely joked like this; it felt like giving up.
“What if you get hurt?”
Jiang Ji suddenly stopped walking, rubbing Li Nianyi’s face messily.
“I’ve been a top level player in the Saionji family for many years; I’m not that fragile. Don’t believe me? Touch my arm muscles.”
Though the muscles weren’t touched, her head was.
“Okay, I get it. Just don’t get hurt no matter what.”
“Yes, yes, Mistress Nian Nian.”
Compared to herself, Jiang Ji was more worried about Li Nianyi, who was an innocent outsider caught in this mess.
After all, Jiang Ji had been entangled with Dai for years and had even been sabotaged by her in secret. For now, even if Dai went crazy, she would likely only target Nianyi.
She knew best how to hurt Jiang Ji.
Moreover, that woman was far more terrifying than Dai.
Jiang Ji sighed inwardly. She hadn’t thought about how to deal with that woman. Being under her terrifying control for so long made even “rebellion” something done cautiously.
The only consolation was, from what she knew, that woman wouldn’t easily attack bystanders. When the Kurosaki group was toppled, only one chairman really paid with their life.
As long as they guarded against Dai, at least Nianyi would be safe.
“Nian Nian, Christmas is still so many days away, I can’t wait. Let’s go see the snow now.”
“Now?”
“Mm, to any city in Hokkaido. It’s snow season now.”
Li Nianyi was stunned for a moment, then pulled out some saved movie screenshots from her phone, offering a suggestion.
“Then how about Otaru? I want to see the filming location of Love Letter. I was so eager after watching the movie but never got the chance. Now I can go with you.”
This time Jiang Ji was the surprised one.
“Don’t you think I’m impatient? Suddenly asking this kind of thing.”
Li Nianyi smiled and gently shook Jiang Ji’s hand.
“How do you know I’m not impatient? I’ve never experienced such a romantic thing as seeing snow. This time, I won’t delay satisfaction. Let’s leave immediately.”
Before the storm comes, I want to do as many romantic things with you as possible.
Looking at Li Nianyi’s crescent-moon eyes, Jiang Ji suddenly felt like she understood what was in her gaze both of them trying their best to dispel inner unease.
No matter how much they deluded themselves, they had to admit that even after handing over the USB, they were still at the center of the storm. The storm was coming it was only a matter of time.
This time, Li Nianyi agreed to Jiang Ji’s plan.
That night, they booked their tickets.
No matter how things unfold, no matter how chaotic the story becomes, right now, they would run away together.
