- Chapter 40 - Orange Kiss
“Hey, hey, hey, can you clip the camera a bit higher? Just a little higher… yes, that spot is perfect.”
Jiang Ji adjusted the rose brooch disguised as a camera on her chest, while Li Nianyi’s voice came clearly through the earpiece, directing her.
It was quite funny Jiang Ji, the boss herself, had to sneak around her own casino looking for something. But there was no choice; they had to be cautious of the Nishinomiya family. If they searched openly, they’d alert their enemies. After some thought, borrowing the method Suzuki used earlier was the best approach.
“Do you remember which places Suzuki visited that day?”
There was no surveillance in this area, so it was like looking for a needle in a haystack to find the USB drive. They couldn’t even be sure the USB was here, but they had to try.
“I met her in the main hall… After that day, I gathered staff to ask about the situation.
The staff lounge, the front desk, between the gaming tables… also the second floor. She seemed to have been seen in those places, but she couldn’t get to higher floors. That’s about it.”
As she spoke, Jiang Ji walked slowly through those locations as if inspecting them.
There were no customers during the day, and staff weren’t on shift yet, so only a few on-duty employees were in the main hall. They respectfully greeted Jiang Ji with “Miss Jiang.”
“Miss Jiang”
Li Nianyi mischievously mimicked their voices.
“Looks like Miss Jiang is a great boss. And I noticed most of the employees here are women, even the bodyguards are mostly female. If I were an employee, I’d like a boss like you.”
Jiang Ji smiled slightly.
“After all, I do have quite a bit of say when it comes to hiring staff.”
“Miss Jiang, you’re awesome!” Li Nianyi exclaimed in the voice of a passionate female protagonist from a Japanese anime.
By then, Jiang Ji had already checked the entire first floor main hall, but there was really nowhere to hide anything here.
“But the second floor is more troublesome there are many private rooms. Searching one by one would take a lot of time and effort.”
The voice in her earpiece paused, then said, “Actually, it’s okay. We only need to check the private rooms Suzuki’s camera likely recorded, as well as the restrooms and storage rooms those places where things are easy to hide.”
“Right, you’re so smart, Nian Nian.”
“You’re just lazy to think!”
Jiang Ji entered the private room where Suzuki had stayed that day. It had been thoroughly cleaned, with no trace left behind. She carefully examined corners, crevices, and the ceiling…
“Hey, why did you think to check those places?” Li Nianyi teased over the comm.
“I’m just being cautious.”
In the end, Jiang Ji even lifted the lid of the toilet water tank in the restroom, but found nothing. Of course, this place was regularly cleaned by the janitorial staff. If anything had been hidden, it would have been found by now.
“Looks like I guessed wrong… Sorry to have wasted your time,” Li Nianyi’s voice sounded a bit disappointed.
Jiang Ji was about to reply when suddenly she remembered: “There’s one more place we haven’t checked.”
She quickly walked to a restroom not far from the private rooms on the second floor.
“Each room here has its own bathroom, so the corridor restroom is mostly for staff,” Jiang Ji explained. “It’s rarely cleaned, especially since there’s a small storage room inside that few people bother to clean.”
She opened the storage room door. Various cleaning tools were inside, mostly unused. The toilet lid was closed, with a layer of dust on it.
Jiang Ji bent down, rummaging through the storage room, making clattering sounds and stirring up dust—but still, nothing.
“You should’ve worn a mask before coming in,” Li Nianyi said through the earpiece, her throat already itchy from the dust.
“Small problem.”
Jiang Ji opened the toilet tank again. The toilet in the storage room was unusable and dried up long ago.
“There really is something inside!”
The camera caught a flickering silver light.
Jiang Ji pulled out a transparent PVC pouch with a USB drive inside.
Both fell silent for a moment.
Li Nianyi had guessed correctly.
“Actually… I think Suzuki’s ‘backup plan’ might have been you all along?”
“Huh?”
Jiang Ji looked puzzled. Did she really seem that trustworthy? Where did Li Nianyi get that idea?
“What kind of expression is that? Even someone who only met you once can tell you’re dependable.
Look around the casino is full of female employees, with all kinds of people mixed in, yet no harassment incidents have occurred. You even stopped the floor manager from reprimanding Suzuki. From Suzuki’s perspective, maybe she really placed her last hope on you.”
Li Nianyi recalled how Jiang Ji described her two encounters with Suzuki.
Jiang Ji was someone who easily made people feel at ease, a fact Li Nianyi knew better than anyone. So it made sense that Suzuki’s final words, “This may be the only right decision I’ve made,” probably referred to not taking the USB drive out of the casino.
Suzuki wouldn’t leave it for someone else. She had already suffered enough and wouldn’t pass the danger onto innocent people.
After a quiet moment, neither spoke.
The USB drive rested lightly in Jiang Ji’s palm.
Suddenly
“Nian Nian, Christmas is coming.”
Jiang Ji clenched the USB drive tightly.
“Mm.”
Although Li Nianyi didn’t understand why Jiang Ji suddenly changed the topic to Christmas, she nodded.
“Before Christmas, let’s solve this case. Then we can go watch the snow together. I want to be with you, Nian Nian.”
Li Nianyi smiled. “How do you know it will snow in Tokyo this Christmas?”
“If it doesn’t, then we’ll go somewhere it snows.”
“Okay, I’ll follow you.”
That afternoon, the USB drive was delivered to Kimoto.
For safety, Li Nianyi wanted Jiang Ji to keep the important evidence for a few more days, but
“Miss Li, I forgot to tell you, I’ve been officially reinstated… though I was transferred to a different department. Recently, there’s been quite a buzz online you might’ve heard. It’s the Special Crimes Unit.”
Li Nianyi video called Kimoto, who appeared to be in an office.
Jiang Ji sat beside Li Nianyi, poking her arm.
“I’ve heard of her. The police even held a press conference introducing this genius detective who just returned from the US.”
“Yes, she’s my current boss. She has reopened the Suzuki fall case.”
Kimoto didn’t mention it wasn’t yet officially reported.
The screen shifted, revealing a tall figure in a gray suit professional and stylish.
The woman turned to the camera, smiling and greeting Li Nianyi.
Kimoto flipped the phone back and said, “Miss Li, you can fully trust us. Our boss is determined to solve this case.”
Li Nianyi didn’t reply immediately. Kimoto hesitated, then heard her say, “Wait, you didn’t say your boss is Yūki Amami!”
“Hey, that’s the important part?”
In any case, they arranged the time and place to hand over the USB.
After hanging up, Li Nianyi noticed Jiang Ji’s pitiful look.
“What’s wrong?”
“You really like Yūki Amami, don’t you?”
Li Nianyi laughed, “Why are you jealous?”
“But you just stared at her!”
Next second, Jiang Ji’s cheek was squished by Li Nianyi’s hand.
“That’s because they look so alike! What are you thinking?”
“I don’t care. You’re punished.”
Jiang Ji looked like an angry hamster under Li Nianyi’s fingers. The hamster was pressed onto the sofa, and took the chance to tickle Li Nianyi’s belly.
They laughed together on the sofa. Why did Jiang Ji laugh too? Because Li Nianyi’s expression was just too funny.
After they tired from laughing, Jiang Ji slowly kissed Li Nianyi’s neck.
Their moist eyes met, and suddenly Li Nianyi flipped Jiang Ji onto her back.
“You were wrong. I want this kind of kiss.”
Li Nianyi held Jiang Ji’s chin firmly and kissed her roughly. The sweet scent of oranges intertwined, tender and lingering, until Jiang Ji’s neck was tinged pink.
“Sis Jiang, you’re so sweet.”
Li Nianyi had no idea how silly she looked smiling like that.
“We just ate oranges,” Jiang Ji lifted her chin and kissed her again. “Of course it’s sweet.”
“Hey! Jiang Ji, you planned this! You wanted to kiss me and deliberately brought the fruit plate!”
Li Nianyi lightly pinched Jiang Ji’s waist.
Jiang Ji cooperated, “You caught me.”
Actually, even without fruit, they would have kissed anyway.
Jiang Ji couldn’t meet the police in person, so this matter still fell to Li Nianyi.
The USB handover took place at the café where Li Nianyi often sat with Kimoto. Kimoto arrived early, and Li Nianyi immediately spotted her figure.
“Miss Li, trust us. This time, we will get the truth for Suzuki Kazuko.”
Kimoto’s eyes were resolute. Returning to the police station had gone smoothly.
Just as Li Nianyi was about to speak, a waiter brought a steaming cup of coffee.
Who ordered this?
Li Nianyi and Kimoto exchanged puzzled glances.
Suddenly, the USB on the table was drenched with the hot coffee within seconds.
“Sorry, sorry!!”
The waiter bowed and frantically wiped coffee off Kimoto.
“Why wipe her? Wipe the table!” Li Nianyi shouted.
Before she finished, someone snatched the USB and Kimoto pushed the waiter aside, chasing after them. Li Nianyi heard a low curse in the air before the person disappeared.
In the corner, the waiter gave Li Nianyi a sinister smile, then hurried out of the café.
As expected, they had been exposed.
