The White Moonlight is So Scheming - Chapter 10
“Ouch!”
Shen Juexia clutched her forehead in pain, tears instantly welling up in her eyes.
Beyond the pain, the only thought in Shen Juexia’s mind was Ji Zhijie is so thin.
Originally, Ji Zhijie had intended to tell her to stop doing strange things like wiping hands, but seeing her tearful expression.
Suddenly.
She couldn’t bring herself to say it.
Slightly lowering her head, Ji Zhijie frowned tightly. “Why don’t you ever watch where you’re going?”
Shen Juexia huffed indignantly, still holding her forehead. “I was following you! You’re the one who stopped suddenly.”
Quick with her words, twisting the truth.
Lowering her gaze, Ji Zhijie reached out and calmly said, “Take your hand away. Let me see how your forehead is.”
“There’s definitely a huge bump!”
Removing her hand, Shen Juexia puffed out her cheeks like a little pufferfish.
After examining the injury, Ji Zhijie’s expression turned serious, her voice grave. “We need to get to the hospital quickly.”
“Did it scar my face!?” Shen Juexia’s eyes widened in horror, her beautiful features twisting in fear.
It was just slightly red.
No bump, not even a scratch.
“No, I’m just worried that if we wait any longer, the doctor won’t be able to find the injury.” A mischievous glint flashed in her
eyes as Ji Zhijie’s lips curled slightly. She turned and walked toward the classroom.
Shen Juexia stood frozen for a second.
Realizing she was being teased, Shen Juexia angrily chased after her. “Ji Zhijie, stop right there!”
How ridiculous.
Why should she listen to her?
Not only did Ji Zhijie not slow down, she quickened her pace, almost breaking into a run.
“Wait for me!”
The sound of little leather shoes clacking against the tiles echoed as Shen Juexia ran after her, shouting.
…
By the time Shen Juexia entered the classroom, Ji Zhijie was already seated at her desk.
Sunlight streamed through the window, bathing her in its glow.
Tiny beads of sweat dotted the girl’s face, glistening like crystal under the interplay of light and shadow.
Her phoenix-like eyes lifted slightly, the clarity of her laughter shimmering like water. Long, thick lashes cast delicate shadows,
softening the sharp contours of her striking features.
For a moment, Shen Juexia was transfixed.
This was her sister at eighteen, a version of her sister she had never seen before.
Her sister had always been cool and composed, like snow that would melt at the slightest touch. She had never laughed as freely and
boldly as Ji Zhijie did now.
For the first time ever.
Shen Juexia entered the classroom and sat down quietly.
Leaning against the windowsill, Ji Zhijie twirled a black pen in her fingers and asked nonchalantly, “What’s wrong with you?”
Turning her head, Shen Juexia stared straight at Ji Zhijie, her gaze utterly unguarded. “You look really pretty when you smile. You
should do it more often.”
“What nonsense.” Ji Zhijie cleared her throat, straightening her posture and setting the pen down.
Only the faint blush creeping up her earlobes.
Betrayed her true emotions.
An inexplicable fire burned in Shen Juexia’s chest, her heart aching with a dull, swollen pain. Her eyes flickered between light
and shadow.
Shen Congjun was far from reliable.
Not long after their mother left, he began bringing one new woman after another into the old house. Even after being scolded by
Grandfather, he refused to change his ways.
He even declared, “I’ll have a son yet,” vowing that not a single cent of the family fortune would go to her sister or herself. And
though Grandfather disapproved, he refused to intervene, allowing Shen Congjun to run wild unchecked.
It wasn’t until Shen Tinghan began making her mark everywhere—at school, in business circles, in social settings, in every place
within their sight—that those from the Shen family finally started taking the sisters seriously.
The long-overdue justice.
Or rather the justice that should never have come, arrived one by one through her sister’s efforts.
Now whenever people mentioned “President Shen,” the first person that came to mind was Shen Tinghan.
Decisive in action, sharp in insight.
Everyone praised her sister as a born businesswoman.
Only Shen Juexia knew the truth.
What her sister had truly wanted to become was a pianist—except playing the piano couldn’t protect them.
Like a flower wilted under the sun, Shen Juexia remained listless for the rest of the classes, neither causing trouble nor falling
asleep.
Her slender fingers curled slightly.
Ji Zhijie’s gaze kept shifting from the textbook to the face beside her. She wanted to ask what was wrong but didn’t know how to
bring it up.
By the time the frustration built up, her own mood had soured.
Noon dismissal.
Students filed out of the classroom one after another.
While tidying her desk, Ji Zhijie casually reminded her, “Class is over.”
“Oh…” Shen Juexia responded faintly, showing no reaction.
“Get up. Let me out.” Ji Zhijie stood and rapped her knuckles against the edge of Shen Juexia’s desk.
Shifting her chair, Shen Juexia lifted herself just enough to make space, then slumped back down lethargically.
Seeing how readily Shen Juexia gave way, Ji Zhijie pressed her lips into a thin line and walked out of the classroom without a
change in expression.
Soon, the classroom was nearly empty.
Only two people remained.
“Shen Juexia, aren’t you going to the cafeteria?” Lin Jie swayed over with a bowl of vegetable salad in hand. “I’m dieting, but
you’re already so thin. Why skip meals?”
The words snapped Shen Juexia out of her daze.
She hurriedly dashed out.
Half of Shengde High School was built on a mountainside.
Class 6 of Grade 12 was on the fourth floor of the Yude Building. There was a shortcut to the cafeteria, a covered bridge on the
second floor leading directly to the library, whose back door opened right into the dining hall.
Beads of sweat formed at her temples as her hair swung in little arcs behind her. Taking two steps at a time, Shen Juexia chased
all the way to the bridge before finally spotting Ji Zhijie.
Bracing her hands on her thighs, she panted lightly and called out, “Ji Zhijie, why didn’t you wait for me? Didn’t we agree to have
lunch together?”
“I asked you.”
Turning to look at her, Ji Zhijie lowered her gaze.
Tilting her nose up, Shen Juexia walked over and stopped right in front of her, cocking her head. “When did you ask me?”
“I told you class was over.”
“Huh?” Shen Juexia’s almond eyes widened in disbelief, her temper flaring. “That counts as asking me? How was I supposed to know
what you meant?”
Ji Zhijie shot her an impassive glance.
Without another word, she continued toward the cafeteria.
“What, no comeback? Even you know you’re being unreasonable, don’t you?” Quickening her steps to catch up, Shen Juexia chattered
nonstop like a little sparrow. “Slow down, I can’t keep up.”
She was practically a walking loudspeaker.
Ji Zhijie’s ears twitched slightly as her strides grew longer, as if she wished she could cover them with her hands.
“Why are you walking even faster now!?”
With an exasperated stomp of her foot, Shen Juexia quickened her pace and grabbed Ji Zhijie’s arm, pulling her back. “Why can’t you
just wait for me?” she demanded.
“You’re really noisy.”
Frowning, Ji Zhijie shot an impatient glance at Shen Juexia’s hand wrapped around her forearm. “It’s too hot. Let go,” she said
coldly.
Shen Juexia puffed her cheeks in frustration at the words.
The two stood at an impasse on the covered walkway.
Passing classmates occasionally cast glances their way.
“If you let go, I’ll walk slower,” Ji Zhijie relented, not wanting to make a scene. She softened her tone to placate the young
mistress.
Her dark lashes fluttered slightly.
Satisfied, Shen Juexia lifted her chin with a smile and finally released her grip. “That’s more like it,” she said cheerfully.
The two girls walked side by side.
Their reflections overlapped on the glass windows, elongated by the blazing sun.
Ji Zhijie moved with poised elegance, while Shen Juexia bounced along playfully, occasionally poking the other girl’s shoulder with
her finger.
The cafeteria at Shengde High School had two floors.
The first floor resembled any ordinary school canteen, but the second floor offered dining standards rivaling Michelin three-star
restaurants—though the prices matched accordingly.
“Let’s eat upstairs? Please?” Shen Juexia tugged lightly at Ji Zhijie’s sleeve with slender fingers, her eyes shining with
anticipation.
Unmoved, Ji Zhijie shook her head and pulled her sleeve free. “I don’t have enough money. You can go upstairs I’ll wait for you by
the entrance when you’re done.”
“But I have money! Come with me~” Shen Juexia’s almond-shaped eyes sparkled as she tugged at the sleeve again, proudly waving her
meal card. “I’ll cover all your meals from now on!”
Well?
Surely this would make her happy!
“I don’t need it.”
Ji Zhijie’s expression turned colder, her tone distant. “My own card has enough, and I’m used to eating on the first floor. The
food here suits me better.”
“No need to be so mean…”
Biting her cheek lightly, Shen Juexia released the sleeve and skipped toward the malatang counter. “Actually, I’ve been craving
first-floor malatang for ages!”
As Shen Juexia ran off,
her skirt fluttered slightly behind her.
Ji Zhijie curled her fingers slightly, her gaze complicated.
As usual,
Ji Zhijie ordered two meat dishes and one vegetable, carrying her tray to a secluded corner by the window.
After scanning the cafeteria,
Shen Juexia spotted her sitting alone and swayed over with her order number, plopping down beside her. “How come your food came so
fast?” she mumbled.
“Pre-made dishes are quicker. Malatang needs to be cooked fresh, it’s normal for it to take longer,” Ji Zhijie explained patiently.
“Oh…” Propping her elbow on the table and resting her chin in her palm, Shen Juexia stared absently out the window.
Tapping the edge of the table lightly, Ji Zhijie glanced at the malatang counter’s display. “Your order’s ready,” she said softly.
“Thanks.”
Shen Juexia smoothed her skirt and stood up.
Returning with her malatang, she carefully set the bowl down across from Ji Zhijie. Just when Ji Zhijie thought she might finally
eat quietly.
Suddenly, Shen Juexia crossed her arms indignantly and said, “I’m going to report to the school. The first-floor cafeteria actually
forgot to give me chopsticks. How am I supposed to eat like this?”
“You…” Ji Jiezhe started to speak but stopped.
His gaze was filled with disbelief.
“What’s wrong?”
“Never mind.”
Putting down his own chopsticks, Ji Jiezhe stood up resignedly and walked to the utensil station by the pillar. He returned with
clean chopsticks and a spoon for Shen Juexia.
The moment Ji Jiezhe stood up,
Shen Juexia’s lips curled into a smile as she happily swung her legs.
Hehe.
Ji Jiezhe was so easy to fool.
