The White Moonlight I Chased, the Divorce I Never Expected - Chapter 61
Out of the corner of her eye, Chi Yi saw An Li give her a quiet nod before stepping out, leaving the cool, sterile exam room to them.
Chi Yi was not someone easily swayed by a few sentimental words. When it came to the question of having a child, the only condition she’d ever set was Wen Ranqing’s own desire.
She had said it clearly—as long as Wen Ranqing wanted it, she would agree.
But truthfully… it was still one of the hardest things for her to say yes to.
Wen Ranqing’s eyes were gentle and resolute. She rested her hand atop Chi Yi’s head, then lifted her chin with the other to look into her eyes.
“Please?”
Chi Yi did love children. And she loved Wen Ranqing. She also wanted a baby that was theirs—a child born of their love.
It wasn’t tradition or pressure that made Wen Ranqing feel this way. She genuinely wanted it. Even if Chi Yi hadn’t presented as an Alpha, she still would have chosen to be with her. But since their secondary genders allowed this possibility—and the doctor had just said it was medically feasible—then why not?
Her voice was soft, coaxing, and filled with care. No Alpha could resist being gently asked by an Omega to have a child together.
Especially this Omega—so elegant and stunning, admired for her poise, talent, and leadership. And yet, she was willing to give all of that up just to be a little kitten curled in Chi Yi’s arms… even wanting to give her a baby.
That kind of devotion—pure affection and the urge to protect—ran so deep it could drown an Alpha’s soul.
Chi Yi’s heart trembled, even as part of her still leaned toward refusal. After a long moment of silence, she reached out, one arm wrapping around Wen Ranqing, the other gently pressing to her soft lower belly.
It wasn’t flat and taut like hers, but smooth and delicate, without a single blemish. It was beautiful—the kind of soft, languid beauty that made her feel lazy and enamored just looking at it.
There was no heat of desire in her eyes this time—only tenderness. Her fingers unconsciously brushed gently across her skin.
Wen Ranqing, relaxed in her arms, lowered her head to gaze at the younger woman—seven years her junior—her thick lashes fluttering. Then she looked up again, eyes filled with deep, aching affection.
“Here,” she whispered.
Chi Yi pressed lightly at that spot. Her nose tingled.
“If a baby grows here… it’ll stretch and hurt.”
“And if something goes wrong, there could be scarring.”
The word baby coming from Wen Ranqing’s lips made it real for the first time—they were about to become a family.
It wasn’t about the burden. It was that Chi Yi was afraid—heart-achingly afraid—of hurting her.
She might tease and play with Wen Ranqing, but every morning after, she was massaging her back and legs, running around to make sure she ate. If not for the help of her father and the housekeeper at the old Chi residence, Chi Yi would still be doing it all herself, three meals a day.
Just thinking of the possible side effects made Chi Yi’s chest tighten painfully. Her voice grew hoarse.
“You’d have to stop going to the office. You’d lose the career you spent four years building. Your whole body would ache. You’d be stuck at home—with me.”
It would be like a divine phoenix, stripped of her wings, forced to stay earthbound. Chi Yi couldn’t accept that.
Her brows furrowed, her voice thick with worry.
“I can’t bear it…”
Chi Yi rarely said sweet words, but when she did, they struck deep like honey. Wen Ranqing’s heart softened—but her tone, unexpectedly, turned quiet and calm.
“Then what if you have the baby, Xiaoyi?”
It was a ridiculous suggestion, one few Alphas would even listen to seriously.
Chi Yi blinked, momentarily stunned. But then… she actually began to think about it.
There had been rare cases—Alphas giving birth through external implantation and cesarean delivery. Their physical resilience often made them better able to endure the strain.
But the regressed uterus and altered anatomy could also cause additional complications, pain beyond normal pregnancy—sometimes even chronic issues.
Still… if Wen Ranqing truly, truly wanted this…
After a pause, Chi Yi gave a nod.
No hesitation at all.
“I’ll do it.”
Her deep black eyes shimmered with earnestness and quiet joy, like she’d just found the perfect solution.
Wen Ranqing had meant to laugh at how silly and impulsive the girl could be—but the moment she looked into Chi Yi’s unwavering eyes, she froze. She saw no less determination than her own.
Her eyes turned red in an instant.
The hand she’d placed behind Chi Yi’s neck tightened slightly, and the thudding of her heartbeat grew louder in Chi Yi’s ears.
She whispered softly:
“If you can carry a baby…, why can’t I, Xiaoyi?”
Warm tears fell onto the skin behind Chi Yi’s ear—hotter even than that one whispered “Jiejie.” Her heart panicked immediately. She tried to lift her head, but Wen Ranqing held her there, enveloped in softness, wrapped tightly in tenderness.
“It doesn’t matter who carries the baby, Xiaoyi.”
Wen Ranqing’s fingers gently stroked her ear, eyes lingering on the gland that had endured so much over the years. She murmured like a promise,
“But I want to love you properly.”
“As long as you’re willing… I won’t go anywhere.”
I’ll stay right here—if you want me to.
Chi Yi exhaled shakily.
She knew she had no right to use love as a leash—to bind her wife in the name of affection. There would never be a real winner in this back-and-forth between love and being loved.
Taking one step forward, or stepping back—either way, it was torment.
But…
Wen Ranqing had already folded her wings, not just choosing not to fly, but preparing to hand over every pure, elegant feather to Chi Yi—without hesitation.
Chi Yi would never be conquered by her own logic. But she would always surrender to Wen Ranqing’s wordless tenderness, to the love that poured from her like a quiet tide.
She found a moment of stillness, turned, and gently pressed Wen Ranqing sideways across her lap, her voice low and yielding:
“I thought it was usually the Alpha who got stuck on this idea.”
“How come it’s the opposite with us?”
Wen Ranqing’s lashes were soaked, tears spilling down onto her blouse—ruined now, like the first one. Chi Yi gave in with a sigh, pinching her soft waist and stroking her like a kitten:
“Don’t cry, alright? Be good.”
If Chi Yi had just left it there, it might’ve been fine. But the fact that she’d actually offered to carry the baby—rather than let Wen Ranqing do it—made it all worse.
Wen Ranqing was already made of water when it came to Chi Yi. Now curled into her embrace, she buried her face in the crook of Chi Yi’s neck and cried even more pitifully.
She began tallying grievances, one by one.
“Xiaoyi… do you not want to be with me every day?”
Chi Yi blinked, startled. “No!”
Wen Ranqing’s muffled voice was thick with emotion:
“I want to give you a baby, and you won’t even let me…”
Her face, buried in Chi Yi’s loose hair, was completely flushed, red and beautiful, her tone broken, yet heartbreakingly adorable.
Chi Yi found herself strangely amused and deeply enchanted. She smiled unconsciously as she gently brushed the strands from Wen Ranqing’s tear-stained cheeks.
The gentle gesture only made Wen Ranqing more flustered. She wriggled away slightly, trying to dodge the hand trailing mischievously near her ear.
Her eyes still brimmed with tears. And then, without warning, she bit Chi Yi’s ear—hard enough to startle her. Not satisfied, she gave her cheek a second nibble and whined through a sob:
“I want to give you a baby~”
“Okay, okay, okay.”
Chi Yi’s heart melted at her soft, drawn-out voice. She didn’t dare say no to her anymore.
Maybe it was because she spoiled Wen Ranqing too much. The once-shy kitten had turned wild, biting back now when she didn’t get her way. And now she was hiccuping through her tears, demanding a promise:
“You said it…”
“You’re not allowed to go back on it!”
Honestly, if Wen Ranqing had started pouting like this from the beginning, Chi Yi might’ve agreed right away. But even now, as she quieted down, she tugged on Chi Yi’s shirt like a forlorn little thing, eyes wide and watery.
“You promised…”
Chi Yi had no defenses left. Her ears felt hot, her heart trembling. She grabbed Wen Ranqing’s arm and gently kneaded it:
“You’ll give me a baby. And you’re my baby.”
“No more crying, alright? Let’s get lunch and buy you a new outfit.”
She patted her back, soothing her like a baby, the way one might calm a fussy child. And their cuddling position now—well, it really looked the part.
Wen Ranqing blinked her tearful peach blossom eyes in confusion. Chi Yi kept calling her “baby”—left and right—until she added a final one:
“You’re my baby.”
Embarrassment surged through Wen Ranqing like a tidal wave, turning her ears scarlet. She buried her face in Chi Yi’s chest and stayed silent for a long time.
The fabric of Chi Yi’s shirt slowly soaked through with tears. Chi Yi, amused, gently lifted her heel and bounced her knee.
“Baby?”
“Mm…” Wen Ranqing whimpered, truly crying now—flustered and helpless. She could never win against Chi Yi’s words.
“Don’t… call me that…” she murmured, breathless.
“Good baby, don’t cry. Let’s take baby to the doctor.”
Chi Yi scooped the little wildcat into her arms—not to carry her away, but just to tease her.
Even that was enough to make Wen Ranqing’s shame bubble to the surface. She pounded her soft fists gently against Chi Yi’s shoulder, pouting and fussing until she was finally set back on the floor.
When An Li came back in, the first thing she saw was her boss—blushing, with her delicate hand held tightly by Chi Yi—looking very much like they had come to a decision.
The room had surveillance, of course. An Li had originally kept it on for clinical reasons, still trying to identify where the couple’s tension lay so she could offer tailored advice as a doctor specializing in secondary gender compatibility.
But the moment she saw her boss—limp and spoiled—curled in an Alpha’s lap like a kitten, she didn’t hesitate to turn off both the video and the audio feed.
Even now, she struggled to keep a straight face.
Still, her tone remained naturally professional, as shaped by years of habit:
“President Wen is likely to enter a nesting phase after permanent marking. She won’t want to be apart even for a moment during the first three days, though the symptoms will ease after a week. I recommend staying indoors if possible.”
She was addressing the Omega, but before Wen Ranqing could respond, Chi Yi had already nodded solemnly.
“Thank you, Dr. An.”
“Just call me An Li,” she offered warmly—like a friend.
It dawned on them—this was probably their first shared friend.
Wen Ranqing had always felt comfortable with her own doctor. But the idea of calling her their friend… that sent a new kind of heat to her cheeks. Almost unconsciously, she tightened her grip on Chi Yi’s hand.
Chi Yi noticed instantly, amused by the sudden bashfulness in the ever-composed President Wen. Smiling, she echoed softly:
“Thank you, An Li.”
They ate lunch first—replenishing the energy Wen Ranqing had lost crying—and in the end, neither of the outfits they’d originally planned for their marriage registration photos were used. Instead, they made a quick stop at one of their favorite luxury boutiques and picked out matching white shirts. Chi Yi drove them to the Civil Affairs Bureau.
By 2:00 PM, the office was already busy with people lining up. But with Wen Ranqing’s hand in hers—always soft, always playful—time passed quickly.
They’d already told Chi Zhong that after getting their certificate, they’d go back to Wen Ranqing’s place. He understood completely.
As their black Jeep cruised toward her home, Chi Yi glanced at the woman beside her—still flipping the marriage certificate open and shut like a treasure. She reached out and rubbed Wen Ranqing’s ring finger.
“Where do you want to hold the wedding?”
Wen Ranqing had been smiling the whole time. When she heard the question, her eyes drifted toward Chi Yi with gentle devotion.
“Anywhere is fine~”
“And the dress? Want to design it yourself?” Chi Yi asked, chuckling as she pulled the handbrake and accelerated. She figured the answer would be the same.
Sure enough, those peach blossom eyes sparkled as she looked down at their red certificates.
“Anything’s fine~”
A few moments passed.
“Destination wedding, maybe?” Chi Yi suggested.
“If President Wen has the time, of course.”
She knew Wen Ranqing’s answers today all boiled down to one truth: as long as they were together, anything was good. But she still wanted to make sure Wen Ranqing felt like her voice mattered.
Wen Ranqing blinked, momentarily stunned. Her heart melted. To think that Chi Yi still remembered the small dreams she’d hidden away for years—her eyes turned soft, her smile emotional. She hugged Chi Yi’s arm as they pulled into the parking garage.
“Really?”
“Of course.”
They only needed one public declaration. Their wedding—that should be something just between the two of them.
In the elevator, Chi Yi held her close. Wen Ranqing leaned on her shoulder like a little bird, and Chi Yi began to reminisce aloud:
“Xiji, Zhihai, Venice… and those little Nordic towns…”
“Xiaoyi…” Wen Ranqing’s eyes gradually welled with tears. Every painting she had tucked her feelings into over the past four years—Chi Yi had remembered them all. She wrapped her arms tightly around Chi Yi’s waist and nuzzled into her shoulder.
“I have time.”
“Junze is doing well. With Cheng Yuan by his side, I’m at ease.”
Chi Yi used her fingerprint to unlock the door, pulled it open—and the next moment, pressed Wen Ranqing up against it in a deep, drawn-out kiss. She kissed her until Wen Ranqing’s legs went weak in her heels. Only then did she gently press her thumb against the corner of her lips.
“So President Wen had it all planned from the beginning.”
“Didn’t transfer the settlement funds because you were sure I was yours?”
Wen Ranqing lowered her eyes, clearly flustered. The truth was, in the beginning, it had been about cash flow. But later… she couldn’t say for sure that she hadn’t hidden the legal and financial notices on purpose.
Unable to speak, she was thankful when Chi Yi leaned down, helped her off with her heels, and lifted her into her arms to carry her to the couch.
As she was kissed breathless beneath Chi Yi, she heard a whisper by her ear:
“It’s alright. You can transfer it now.”
“Consider it part of your dowry.”
