The Villainess’s Darling [Quick Transmigration] - Chapter 47
Ning Xiao glanced at Xu Chun and smiled faintly. “I can see that Miss Xu’s upbringing is quite… distinct.”
Xu Chun froze, unsure of what she meant. “My family is indeed strict. My parents are very good people.”
Ning Xiao nodded. “No wonder Miss Xu is so fond of driving wedges behind people’s backs. It seems your family taught you well.”
“You!” Xu Chun’s smile stiffened, her lips trembling for a long time before she could find words.
Ning Xiao said calmly, “Miss Xu, to be frank, you can’t compare to even one of Can’er’s fingers. Today, I’ve finally seen the true meaning of ‘like parents, like daughter.'” Whether it was biological or adoptive, the character seemed consistent.
Xu Chun turned pale with rage. “How dare you insult my parents!”
Her parents were respected figures; she had never been insulted like this. “You’ll pay for what you said today! You think Yun Can’er can actually land the lead? Dream on! Let me tell you, the lead was decided long ago—it’s me. Yun Can’er is just here for the show!”
“Is that so? Even I didn’t know the lead was predetermined, yet you do?” A male voice rang out from behind Xu Chun.
Fuming and acting without thinking, Xu Chun snapped back, “If you don’t have anything useful to say, keep your mouth shut! Do I need your permission to be the lead?!”
She spun around, eager to see who else was as “blind” as Ning Xiao, only to find Liu Qiyuan, Yuan Wenxiao, and Yun Can’er staring at her with cold indifference.
Xu Chun was instantly dumbfounded. She reached out to grab Yuan Wenxiao’s arm in a panic. “Director Yuan, it’s not what it sounds like! Let me explain!”
Yuan Wenxiao stepped back, avoiding her touch. “Miss Xu, the audition is over. Go home and wait for the results.”
Xu Chun trembled. The opportunity she had worked so hard for had been ruined by Ning Xiao. “Director Yuan, give me another chance! I was talking nonsense!”
She had craved attention since childhood. Having a successful fiancé wasn’t enough to satisfy her vanity, so she had pushed to enter the entertainment industry. Since the Xu family didn’t have industry ties, she relied on her fiancé’s family. But their influence was limited, so she had resorted to bribing the executive director just to see the script early.
Success was within her grasp, only to be thrown away because of Ning Xiao.
Yuan Wenxiao ignored her and turned to Yun Can’er. “You too, Can’er. Go home and wait for news.”
“Of course, Director Yuan,” Can’er replied. She said her goodbyes and left with Ning Xiao immediately.
Xu Chun’s hope flickered back to life. Director Yuan had said the same thing to both of them, did that mean she still had a chance?
Yuan Wenxiao acted as if he hadn’t heard her and walked back into the meeting room. Xu Chun turned to Liu Qiyuan.
Liu Qiyuan smiled thinly. “Don’t worry. Since the role was already ‘predetermined’ for you, you don’t need our permission.”
It was a killing blow. Xu Chun’s face went white. She had not only lost the role but had offended a famous director and screenwriter. Her future career path was suddenly looking very bleak.
And she blamed all of it on Ning Xiao and Yun Can’er.
Outside the building, Ning Xiao and Can’er passed a flashy red Maserati. The driver, wearing sunglasses despite the cold, was leaning back and whistling at them.
Ning Xiao:
Yun Can’er:
Once they were at a distance, Can’er asked, “Ning-ning, isn’t he cold?” It was nearly freezing, yet he was wearing a floral shirt with the windows down. His whistle had been distorted by the wind, fluttering like a ribbon in a gale.
“Mmm… he might have a bit of a brain issue. We should be compassionate and not discriminate,” Ning Xiao said solemnly.
Can’er nodded. “I won’t discriminate against him!”
Five minutes later, Xu Chun hurried out and climbed into the Maserati. The moment she closed the door; she burst into tears.
Yu Xinglong was startled. “Chun-chun, what happened? I told you I should have gone in! Did someone bully you?!”
“There were two of us for the lead,” Xu Chun sobbed. “I was so prepared, but… the other girl had a sugar daddy. She bragged to my face that the role was hers and I was just a placeholder! How could she be so cruel?!”
Yu Xinglong was furious. “Did you ask the director?! That’s playing people for fools!”
“The director heard, but it was no use… he chose her anyway.” Xu Chun looked up, her face a picture of tragic beauty. “Xinglong, what should I do? I really wanted to act in Director Yuan’s film. Even. even if it’s not the lead”
Yu Xinglong, heart racing at her look of trust and dependence, beat his chest. “I’ll find someone for you immediately! The lead might be hard, but I can get you as many supporting roles as you want!”
Xu Chun threw herself into his arms. “Thank you, Xinglong. I knew you were the best to me”
While she acted spoiled, her eyes were full of mockery and disgust. Yu Xinglong was a nouveau riche fiancé her family had forced on her. She hated him, but her parents insisted she hold onto him for his wealth. Now that she wanted to be a star, his money finally had a use.
Ning Xiao, Yun Can’er, just you wait, she thought. Even the biggest stars bow to capital. And Yun Can’er is just a newcomer. I’ll make sure she’s miserable on set!
A day later, Yun Can’er received a call from a passionate Yuan Wenxiao, asking her to come sign the contract. “You are my ideal lead! No one else fits my requirements!” He sounded like a different person from the cold director at the audition.
That afternoon, Ning Xiao accompanied her with a company lawyer. The pay was 500,000 RMB a limit for a newcomer with no released works.
“That’s fine, Director Yuan,” Can’er said with a wink. “After your film, my value will soar. Next time you call me, it’ll be 5 million.”
Yuan Wenxiao’s guilt vanished, replaced by a laugh. “Alright! I’ll work hard to make you an international Best Actress so your value hits 5 million!”
The film, Spring of the Sparrow, was a female-centric story. Yu Xinglong couldn’t get Xu Chun a major part through the director, but he used his wealth to bribe the executive and casting directors. Xu Chun ended up snatching the role of the “third female lead.”
At the opening ceremony, Can’er wasn’t surprised to see Xu Chun. Ning Xiao had already warned her that Xu Chun might snatch a supporting role.
As filming began, the very first scene was a confrontation between the female lead and the third female lead.
Can’er walked onto the set, and her assistant, Ling, handed her a hand warmer. “President Ning told me you’re sensitive to the cold. She said I must make sure you stay warm!”
Hearing it was Ning Xiao’s instruction, Can’er smiled sweetly. While the set was being prepared, Ling went to the gate to pick up a hot milk tea delivery Ning Xiao had ordered.
Left alone in a sheltered corner, Can’er felt a presence.
“You’re quite proud of yourself, aren’t you, Yun Can’er?” Xu Chun appeared around the corner, looking at her with contempt.
“No… I’m not.”
“Tsk, stop acting. Tell me who your sugar daddy is. Don’t give me that ‘no one’ nonsense a newcomer doesn’t get a lead over me without backing!”
Can’er explained softly, “Actually, I’m not a total newcomer. I’ve filmed a drama and a movie, but the drama is in post-production and the movie hasn’t been released yet.”
“Ha!” Xu Chun laughed mockingly. “A lead and a supporting role without background? Impossible! Stop faking it. Or maybe you’re lying? How convenient that nothing has been released. Even if it’s true, it’s probably because your luck is so bad you’ve cursed the productions.”
As Xu Chun grew more spiteful, Ling returned with the tea and stood in front of Can’er. “What are you doing? Picking on her because she’s nice? Well, I’m not!”
Xu Chun glared at Can’er and turned to leave.
“Wait!” Can’er called out. “Xu Chun, you recorded that conversation. Delete it before you go.”
