As she stood on the podium, her raven-black hair and snow-white skin made her stand out. The girl’s eyes, bright as autumn pools, landed straight on Yun Can’er, and her red lips curled into a faint smile.

Seeing Ning Xiao walk in with her backpack, many students in Class 1 covered their mouths and gasped in surprise. Only Yun Can’er, the target of Ning Xiao’s gaze, kept her back ramrod straight. She kept her head down, staring at her book as if everything happening around her had nothing to do with her.

Shang Shaotan replied indifferently, “I don’t like girls who are too pretty.”

Yuan Wei leaned in close and asked seriously, “You really don’t like her?”

“I don’t.” To be precise, he detested her.

She turned around and saw Yuan Wei. She arched an eyebrow and asked, “Is something wrong?”

Yuan Wei rubbed his head and gave a shy smile. “Ning Xiao, let’s introduce ourselves properly. I’m Yuan Wei—Yuan as in the Yuan Dynasty, Wei as in the Wei State. I’m Shang Shaotan’s best friend. If there’s anything you want to know, just ask me. I’ll tell you everything I know.”

Yuan Wei had already mapped out his pursuit strategy. It didn’t matter that Ning Xiao liked Shang Shaotan; as his best friend, he had the perfect excuse to talk to her. He planned to use the “slow-boiled frog” approach, wearing her down with persistence until she finally gave in.

Ning Xiao remembered the name Yuan Wei. Among Shang Shaotan’s group of friends in the novel, he was the only male supporting character with a bit of a conscience. He had helped Yun Can’er quite a bit in the later stages of the story.

“Alright, then I’ll be troubling you.” Ning Xiao’s red lips curved slightly, her eyes shimmering like melting ice in spring.

“No trouble at all, no trouble at all!” Yuan Wei muttered, feeling dazed by her smile.
