- Chapter 4 - As It Turns Out, Only a Moment Had Passed Since Her Death
Yun Chuanzhi had no experience with such things. To call it a kiss would be an overstatement; it was more like a collision, one that left her lips throbbing with pain.
The moisture-laden lips were unexpectedly soft. She lingered there for a good while until she heard a low curse, followed immediately by a dull pain in her chest.
Then, she flew straight into a wall of mist and quickly lost consciousness.
Yun Chuanzhi had fainted, her awareness drifting like flotsam in a surging river, sometimes clear, sometimes chaotic.
For a few moments, she almost could not distinguish whether she was Cui Ergou, a humble little immortal servant in the Qianyuan Realm, or the “Living Yama” of Wujian City, who had killed countless people just to survive.
Yun Chuanzhi woke up again. This time, she was not lying in that dilapidated little hut, but in a warm and dry place. A light rain fell outside the carved window lattices, and beneath her was a Luohan bed covered with blankets. A gentle breeze occasionally brought the scent of incense, which felt pleasant and soothing.
Bai Fenghe actually didn’t kill her?
Yun Chuanzhi propped herself up by the edge of the bed to rise, but the sharp pain in her chest nearly took her breath away. She had no choice but to lie back down, sighing several times in her heart about what a mess this all was.
There was a knock on the door, and Lingshui entered. She carried a wooden tray containing a fragrant medicinal pill in a jade plate and a green waist token.
“You’re awake.” Lingshui looked her over from head to toe with a stiff face before setting the tray down.
“Where is this?” Since she couldn’t move, Yun Chuanzhi could only ask while lying flat.
“Spring-Greeting Pavilion, the Sect Master’s sleeping quarters.”
I’m still at Bai Fenghe’s place? Yun Chuanzhi blinked her eyelids and asked again: “What happened just now? How long was I out?”
“You were unconscious for a few hours. It is now the Hour of the Rabbit,” Lingshui said. She seemed to want to ask more, but in the end, she only answered mechanically: “As for what happened yesterday, I do not know much. When I entered the room, you were already head-down in the water pool.”
That scene must have looked terrible, Yun Chuanzhi sighed.
The room was quiet for a while before Lingshui finally couldn’t hold back and spoke up.
“How did you provoke the Sect Master yesterday? I have never seen the Sect Master so angry; she nearly smashed the entire sleeping quarters into dust.”
Furthermore, the Sect Master was so angry she had even bitten her lip, yet she didn’t kill Cui Ergou. Instead, she ordered them to drag her away and even bestowed a medicinal pill and a gate token.
This matter quickly spread like wildfire through the sect. Everyone was curious about what kind of trick this little servant had used to make the murderous Sect Master show mercy twice.
Yun Chuanzhi didn’t dare tell the truth, so she could only make an excuse: “Perhaps it was an offense in speech.”
“By the way, yesterday Bai Feng… the Sect Master told you to teach me how to serve her. How exactly am I supposed to serve?” She suddenly remembered Bai Fenghe’s words from the previous day and asked.
Lingshui was somewhat skeptical of her answer but didn’t press further: “How else would you serve? Weren’t you taught when you entered Buxi Mountain as a servant? Do I really need to explain it again?”
“No need, I was just asking,” Yun Chuanzhi said with a smile.
Inwardly, however, she was fuming. Bai Fenghe had indeed been bluffing yesterday; that woman was truly cunning.
While she was feeling resentful, Lingshui moved the wooden tray next to her: “You fell quite hard yesterday. This is a healing pill, and here is the gate token belonging to the servants of the Gundan Sect.”
Yun Chuanzhi paused: “What sect?”
“The Gundan Sect,” Lingshui repeated. She seemed to want to laugh. “Buxi Mountain has five peaks in total, each managed by one of the five Sect Masters.”
“Our Sect Master manages the Fifth Peak, the Gundan Sect.”
Gundan Sect (Get Out Sect)… what a name.
Perhaps when the cultivator responsible for naming the peaks went to ask Bai Fenghe, they had annoyed her, and she had simply told them to “get out,” leading to the birth of this “elegant” name.
“And this gate token is…”
“Servants on Buxi Mountain are divided into two types. One is a laborer like you were, responsible for chores like cleaning; they have no gate token and cannot enter the inner gate. The other is a formal immortal servant, equipped with a gate token, who can serve by the side of the Sect Leader, Sect Masters, and various cultivation disciples.”
“This type of servant receives a much higher monthly allowance and can listen in on cultivation lectures. If a servant has some talent, they might even be able to practice some techniques.”
Lingshui was convinced that Cui Ergou’s brain had been damaged by the Sect Master’s beating, which was why her personality had changed and she knew nothing. Thus, she explained in great detail.
“Meaning, yesterday…” Yun Chuanzhi was quite surprised. “Bai Fenghe didn’t just spare my life, she also gave me a promotion?”
“How can you call the Sect Master by her name? That is disrespectful,” Lingshui scolded with a frown. “The Sect Master specifically called for you to serve today. Take this pill and go to your post in a moment.”
She turned to leave but was called back by Yun Chuanzhi: “Wait.”
“What year and era is it now?”
How pitiful, her brain is truly broken to this extent. The disdain in Lingshui’s eyes was gradually replaced by pity. She withdrew her gaze and replied: “It is the year 356 of the Qianyuan Calendar.”
She opened the door and left. The sound of rain hitting the eaves grew much louder. Yun Chuanzhi swallowed the pill and waited for the sharp pain in her chest to subside.
After a while, she stood up and walked to the window, standing quietly within the curtain of rain. she looked toward the mountains shrouded in mist that stretched into the sea of clouds.
The mountain scenery was turning a fresh green. As it turned out, only a moment had passed—five years, to be exact—since her death.
Unfortunately, now was not the time for sentimentality.
Because Yun Chuanzhi was hungry.
When Lingshui entered earlier, she was still in pain and didn’t feel the hunger. Now that the medicinal pill had dissolved in her body and nourished her internal organs, the feeling of starvation came knocking.
If her deductions were correct, this body had not eaten a single grain of rice for two full days.
Perhaps because life had been too bitter in her youth, Yun Chuanzhi hated the feeling of hunger more than anything else. In Wujian City, she would rather be injured and bleeding than miss a single meal.
Lingshui had long since left. Although this room was fully furnished, there was not a scrap of food. Yun Chuanzhi found nothing after searching and had to step out to ask someone.
The weather in the mountains was unpredictable. It had been raining just a moment ago, but in an instant, the sky cleared. As the daylight brightened, the warm sunlight broke through the clouds, pouring into the hall through countless gaps. The sleeping quarters that had looked empty and desolate last night were now bright and transparent; even the Yama paintings on the ceiling seemed much more amiable.
The hall was empty. Yun Chuanzhi walked several laps around the corridor before she saw an immortal servant using magic to clean the roof beams.
The person glanced at Yun Chuanzhi up and down before answering slowly: “You cannot eat in the Sect Master’s sleeping quarters. You have to go outside. There should be some food left at the Xixie Pavilion on the West Mountain.”
Yun Chuanzhi didn’t mind the person’s attitude. She said her thanks and headed out of the hall.
Under the sunlight, the mountain peaks were no longer black and gloomy like the night before. Yun Chuanzhi bathed in the sunlight as she walked through the mountains; the ground beneath her feet was sprouting new buds.
Back in Wujian City, such vibrant vitality only appeared in dreams. When she was awake, there were only endless ruins, demons and spirits nourished by miasma, and hailstorms or acid rain that could fall at any time.
When she woke up yesterday, it was already night, so she couldn’t see the beauty of the rising sun and didn’t feel much. Today, standing on the mountain ridge and looking into the distance, she saw the layered mountain ranges stretching for thousands of miles and meeting the white sea of clouds. She saw the ornate pavilions and golden buildings of the Gundan Sect on the nearby peak, and the majestic main peak of Buxi Mountain far behind her, faintly shimmering with golden light.
Only then did she truly realize that she was already in the “Qianyuan Immortal Realm”—a place she had dreamed of but could never reach.
Yun Chuanzhi quickly found the Xixie Pavilion the servant had mentioned. Before she even entered, the scent of food wafted toward her. Yun Chuanzhi’s stomach burned, and she couldn’t help but quicken her pace.
Inside, several rows of tables and chairs were set up. Not many people were eating, but they were all gathered in one spot. When they saw Yun Chuanzhi enter, the group that had been laughing and talking fell into silence.
Then came the low whispers.
“Is that the servant who seduced the Sect Master? She actually wasn’t beaten to death?”
“Not only was she not killed, but Sister Lingshui said she even entered our inner gate despite being a slave. I wonder what means she used.”
“But the Sect Master has seen all sorts of beautiful faces. How could a country bumpkin like Cui Ergou make her show mercy?”
“Who knows, I guess…”
Yun Chuanzhi didn’t listen to what they guessed. Her mind was currently filled with hot food, and she had no interest in paying attention to the gossip of others.
She found the serving area. By the stove were some meat buns and plain porridge. Although not much food was left, it looked and smelled delicious.
She said a polite word of greeting, then reached out to take a meat bun from a dish. However, before her hand could touch the plate, a shiny iron ladle appeared out of nowhere and struck hard toward the back of her hand.
Thanks to her quick reflexes, Yun Chuanzhi flipped her wrist to dodge the ladle. The ladle hit the dish with a clang, and the white porcelain plate instantly shattered into pieces.
She frowned and looked up. Holding the iron ladle was a short, fat man staring at her with disgust. He shouted: “Who are you?”
“Isn’t this the place for servants to eat?” Yun Chuanzhi saw the man’s intentional provocation, so she took off the gate token at her waist and held it up. “I am a servant designated by the Sect Master.”
The man let out a sneer and threw the iron ladle back into the pot: “A lowly slave like you is not worthy of eating with decent people like us. Get out of here quickly.”
“Don’t try to pressure me with the Sect Master. There are dozens, if not a hundred, people the Sect Master has taken an interest in. Most of the time, she can’t be bothered with them by the second day. If everyone came asking for favoritism, how could we ever keep up with the work?”
“Get out, get out!” As he spoke, he reached out to push Yun Chuanzhi away. Yun Chuanzhi stumbled a few steps and hit the corner of a table, hissing in pain.
The laughter of the people behind her rang out. Yun Chuanzhi clenched her fists.
“I am not asking for any favoritism,” she said. “I only want to eat like the other servants.”
The man looked extremely impatient. He glanced around, grabbed a bun, and threw it out the door. The snow-white meat bun fell onto the sun-drenched ground, rolling in the mud.
“Eat up, eat up!” he shouted loudly.
Yun Chuanzhi’s eyelashes trembled. She looked at the pathetic bun. This scene briefly merged with certain blurred fragments in her memory, and she became somewhat dazed.
The man reached out to push her again. Yun Chuanzhi didn’t let him touch her this time; instead, she turned her body and nimbly dodged to the side.
“What if I insist on eating here?” she said softly.
