- Chapter 9 - Lu Qinnian’s Possessiveness
“This is infuriating!” Lu Kui muttered through gritted teeth. “What does she mean, ‘preferring Yan Hui’s teaching’? What is Xie Muqing playing at?”
Lu Ge, watching from beside the usually composed Lu Kui, let out a mischievous laugh. “She’s basically saying you don’t know how to teach.”
Slap! Lu Kui slammed her hand onto the railing in frustration. Lu Ge jumped, glaring at her. “You scared the life out of me!”
Down on the range, the group continued. “Try it yourself,” Yan Hui suggested.
She stepped back, signaling for Song Ziqing to take a shot. Song Ziqing hesitated, her confidence wavering. She turned and raised her weapon, aiming for the bullseye. She held her breath nervously, her mind a complete mess; she felt as though everyone’s eyes were boring into her back like needles, making it impossible to settle her nerves.
Yan Hui saw this and took a step forward, closing the distance even more than before. She wanted to get close enough to catch a scent; once the girl became agitated, she would inevitably leak pheromones, even if it was just a tiny, momentary trace.
Just as she leaned in and reached for Song Ziqing’s hand, her wrist was intercepted and pulled away.
Lu Qinnian was now standing right by Song Ziqing’s arm. She glared at the person standing behind the girl, her expression clouded with visible displeasure as she said something in a sharp tone.
Yan Hui let go, laughing as she spread her hands and took a step back.
Lu Qinnian shot her a cold, lingering look before stepping in behind Song Ziqing. In a clear display of territoriality, she reached around from behind, pressing her hand against Song Ziqing’s shoulder to pull the girl firmly against her chest. Song Ziqing was forced to straighten her back, pinned tightly against the person behind her.
Then, Lu Qinnian leaned down and adjusted Song Ziqing’s thigh. Song Ziqing stiffened instantly, a numbing sensation like an electric shock rippling through her. As Lu Qinnian pressed against her thigh to widen her stance, Song Ziqing found herself standing much more firmly, making it easier to steady the handgun.
Moving with fluid precision, Lu Qinnian lifted the girl’s wrist, tightened her grip on the hand holding the weapon, and leaned her head over Song Ziqing’s shoulder. She gave a quick glance before letting go, signaling for her to fire.
Song Ziqing held her breath the entire time, staring blankly at her target before decisively pulling the trigger, firing several shots in quick succession.
When she finished, she remained standing there stiffly. Lu Qinnian didn’t move away; she stayed pressed against her, so close that Song Ziqing felt she could sense the woman’s heartbeat and breathing through her own back. She didn’t dare move a muscle.
Lu Qinnian eventually reached out to remove the ear defenders from Song Ziqing’s ears. She looked toward the range officer before turning back to Song Ziqing. “If there’s something you don’t know in the future, I will teach you. Don’t let irrelevant people give you a mess of instructions.”
Yan Hui: “…”
Song Ziqing turned her head blankly to look at the woman behind her. Seeing her dazed expression, Lu Qinnian knit her brows slightly. “What are you staring at? Did you hear me?”
Song Ziqing nodded mechanically, her mind a total void. Doesn’t she hate this ungrateful wolf the most? What kind of tactic is this?
Xie Muqing watched the two of them, pursing her lips. She forced a lighthearted laugh to break the tension. “What’s going on? You two sisters are awfully clingy today. It’s a bit much, don’t you think?”
The moment she spoke, Lu Qinnian seemed to realize she had overstepped. She took a step back, her gaze flickering toward Yan Hui.
Yan Hui spread her hands, though she gave Song Ziqing a gentle, warm smile. “Qingqing, your sister sure is domineering. She won’t even let you play with me.”
Song Ziqing was completely bewildered, thinking to herself, How is this my fault?! However, knowing that Yan Hui and Lu Qinnian were at odds, she remembered the old saying: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Perhaps Yan Hui could even help her at a critical moment. She smiled and replied, “It’s okay, we can just play together in secret.”
Lu Qinnian turned back to her in disbelief. “Are you not even going to bother hiding it from me anymore?”
Song Ziqing put on an innocent face and spread her hands. “Niannian, what are you saying? I don’t understand.”
“Call me ‘Sister’!” Lu Qinnian emphasized with a look of displeasure.
Xie Muqing stared blankly at Lu Qinnian. Usually, Lu Qinnian wouldn’t even acknowledge this sister when she came over to act spoiled, yet now she was actually bickering with Song Ziqing over a formal title?
Song Ziqing chuckled and looked at Yan Hui. “See? My sister loves me the most; she can’t even stand the thought of me playing with others.”
Yan Hui froze for a second before bursting into laughter. “Lu Qinnian, I didn’t realize your obsessive possessiveness manifested in your love for your sister as well as in the business market. Though, it seems you only act this way toward her.”
She turned her gaze toward the two women standing further away, who were currently watching like a pair of quiet huskies.
“Is there something different about Qingqing? Now I’m even more curious.” Yan Hui’s words were loaded with meaning. Seeing Song Ziqing’s momentarily stunned expression, she laughed even more shamelessly.
Lu Qinnian’s expression shifted, and she watched Yan Hui with a heavy, serious gaze.
Yan Hui paused, reigning herself in slightly. She smiled at Song Ziqing. “Think how heartbroken your sister will be when you get married in the future.”
Seeing the situation, Xie Muqing quickly joked, “As long as she doesn’t marry anyone from your Yan family, it’ll be fine.”
Yan Hui took a step forward, leaning down slightly to get closer to Song Ziqing’s face. She gave a mischievous grin. “That’s not necessarily true. Qingqing, the people of the Yan family aren’t any less impressive than the Lus.”
Lu Qinnian’s lips twitched. Her expression turned dark as she turned to leave, her voice steady and cool. “What are you standing there for, Song Ziqing? Keep up.”
“Oh!” Song Ziqing snapped out of it, immediately setting down the handgun and hurrying after Lu Qinnian.
Yan Hui stood up straight, one hand in her pocket, her eyes burning as she watched Song Ziqing’s retreating figure. Recalling the scent from the night before, she couldn’t help but sigh. “Why didn’t I notice how cute she was before?”
Xie Muqing froze and turned back to her. “What are you planning?”
“To steal her, of course.” Yan Hui smiled at the nervous Xie Muqing. “I want everything Lu Qinnian likes, and besides, I find I actually quite like her myself.”
“You’re insane!” Xie Muqing hissed through gritted teeth. “All of you are insane!”
With that, she angrily followed after them. “Song Ziqing is insane too!”
