- Chapter 8 - Yan Hui Guesses Qingqing’s Identity
The Shooting Range.
Lu Ge glanced at Lu Kui, who was standing beside her. “Don’t you have work to get to? Why did you follow us here?”
Lu Kui watched Lu Qinnian, Xie Muqing, and the others out on the range, then looked over at Yan Hui, who was approaching from the other side. “I feel like Lu Qinnian bringing Qingqing to a shooting range isn’t as simple as it looks. I’m worried about her.”
“And what’s the deal with Yan Hui? It was already strange enough that she showed up at Qingqing’s celebration dinner yesterday. Then this morning, she presents evidence of Qingqing buying those tools… yet now she’s here attending a gathering with Lu Qinnian?”
Lu Kui’s heart skipped a beat. She looked at the confused, muttering Lu Ge. “Where is Qingqing?”
“Changing in the back,” Lu Ge replied, sizing up the approaching Yan Hui. She hesitated before adding, “You don’t think she’s here looking for that top-tier Omega from last night, do you?”
Lu Kui froze, her brow furrowing deeply. “Lu Qinnian wouldn’t be planning to sell Qingqing out, would she?”
“Hmm?” Lu Ge looked at the displeased woman beside her in confusion.
In the changing room behind the range, Song Ziqing had braided her hair into two plaits draped over her shoulders. She was dressed in a pink, form-fitting tracksuit and was pulling on a pair of black gloves. As she stepped out, her eyes lit up at the sight of a figure with their back turned to her.
The woman was dressed in black sportswear, with a tactical belt cinched around her waist that perfectly highlighted her sexy, slender midriff. Her long legs were braced in a steady shooting stance, her arms were level, and her back was a picture of straight, powerful grace. There was a unique, powerful brand of sexiness in her posture.
Song Ziqing couldn’t help but swallow hard. This silhouette was exactly her type a literal ideal. She felt compelled to go over and strike up a conversation; even if they didn’t become lovers, she at least wanted to be friends so she could admire this view anytime.
She walked forward with a beaming smile, hands tucked behind her back as she playfully leaned her head out to say hello. “Hi!”
The second the word left her mouth, she recoiled as if stung, stumbling back and grabbing the nearby railing for support. “Lu Qinnian?!”
Lu Qinnian took off her ear defenders, looking the girl up and down with a look of pure disdain.
“Qingqing, where were you just now?” Xie Muqing asked as she emerged from the restroom.
Song Ziqing took one more uncertain look at Lu Qinnian before shaking her head with a wry laugh. “Changing my clothes.”
Yan Hui strolled over as well. “You sisters certainly are close. No wonder you can stand here perfectly fine after making such a massive mistake.”
Song Ziqing turned and gave her a sharp glare. “Are you trying to drive a wedge between me and Sister Niannian’s world-shaking sisterly bond?”
Yan Hui was taken aback for a moment before bursting into laughter. “Lu Qinnian, this sister of yours is far more interesting than you are. Why don’t you lend her to me for a day of fun?”
Song Ziqing was shocked. Lu Qinnian’s brow furrowed in displeasure, while Xie Muqing nervously shot warning looks at Yan Hui.
Yan Hui laughed again. “I meant a shooting competition. What’s wrong with you two? What were you thinking? We’re all Alphas here; I’m not as ‘heavy-handed’ as Lu Ge.”
Standing in the distance, Lu Ge let out a sudden sneeze. Lu Kui glanced at her, looking helpless. “I told you not to drink that stuff. You drank it while you were already wasted last night; I don’t know what you were thinking. Aren’t you afraid of dulling your sense of smell?”
Lu Ge rubbed her nose. “Do you think Lu Qinnian invited that top-tier Omega from last night to come here?”
“Oh—” Lu Kui raised an eyebrow. “So you weren’t actually worried about Qingqing; you had this on your mind all along?”
“Just a side thought,” Lu Ge replied with a grin, folding her arms as she watched the range. She saw Song Ziqing moving with extreme awkwardness, shooting like a complete amateur. Her shot went so far wide that it almost hit the target of the person standing next to her.
Lu Kui: “…”
Lu Ge froze, then burst out laughing. “It looks like someone was even more tired than I was last night. How did she miss by that much?”
Lu Kui’s brow furrowed in confusion. Whenever she had taught Song Ziqing in the past, the girl had shown great talent and a high hit rate. Why was she acting like she’d never touched a gun before today? Even her grip was completely wrong.
Yan Hui took off her ear defenders and laughed at the girl beside her. “You actually don’t know how to shoot?”
Song Ziqing’s face fell. Who on earth learns this for fun? If she had known she’d transmigrate into a book, she would have taken lessons.
Xie Muqing gave the embarrassed girl a comforting smile. “It’s okay. Qingqing doesn’t usually come out to play with Qinnian, so it’s normal that she doesn’t know how. I only learned because I come here with Qinnian often. Luckily, she’s a good teacher, or I wouldn’t have learned so fast.”
Song Ziqing shot her a look, then glanced at the disdainful Lu Qinnian beside her.
Yan Hui walked over with a smile. “Let me teach you. I’m a much better teacher than Lu Qinnian. I guarantee you’ll get it in no time.”
“Huh?” Before Song Ziqing could react, Yan Hui was standing directly behind her. She reached out to hold Song Ziqing’s hand, lifting the weapon. Standing close enough that her breath brushed against Song Ziqing’s ear, she whispered, “Straighten your arm.”
Song Ziqing immediately complied. Yan Hui held the hand holding the gun with one hand while her other arm wrapped around Song Ziqing’s shoulder in a near-embrace. She began correcting the girl’s grip.
“Right, just like that. Close your right eye and aim.” Yan Hui’s voice was right at her ear. The crisp scent of camellia—though Song Ziqing couldn’t tell if it was perfume or pheromones combined with the intimate proximity was enough to make her heart race.
Song Ziqing’s hand felt hot as it was enveloped by Yan Hui’s warm palm. Their skin touched, and with the warm breath at her ear, her heart skipped a beat as she pulled the trigger. She fired several rounds in quick succession.
Upstairs, Lu Ge was so angry she looked ready to vault over the railing and punch someone. Lu Kui had to hold her back. Lu Ge cursed excitedly, “That bastard Yan Hui! How dare she touch my sister! I’ll kill her! Get your filthy hands off her, aaaaaah!”
Lu Kui: “…”
The range officer announced excitedly, “Six shots directly in the bullseye! Six perfect tens!”
Yan Hui tilted her head, looking at the stunned girl with a smug smile. Song Ziqing, face flushed and heart pounding, looked at her in a daze. Yan Hui’s own heart skipped a beat; she suddenly pulled her hand back and took a step away. She shot a triumphant look at the nearby Lu Qinnian.
Seeing that Lu Qinnian appeared quite angry, Xie Muqing laughed. “Yan Hui really does know how to teach. Qingqing learned so fast! Do you prefer her teaching you? Qinnian is going to be jealous.”
Song Ziqing finally snapped out of it with an awkward laugh. Yan Hui noticed her flushed cheeks, and for a moment, her own heart fluttered. A strange new emotion welled up inside her as she studied Song Ziqing with a searching, deep gaze.
She suddenly remembered that last night, when the Omega was taken away by Lu Qinnian, Song Ziqing had also disappeared. Could it be…
Yan Hui’s eyes widened as she stared at Song Ziqing in disbelief. On the surface, no one mentioned Song Ziqing’s status as a foster daughter, but in secret, everyone knew the Lu family had taken in a highly talented “Alpha” as a foster child.
But to this day, no one had ever smelled Song Ziqing’s pheromones. Could it be that she wasn’t an Alpha at all?! Was the top-tier Omega from last night actually Song Ziqing?!
