- Chapter 13 - Niannian’s Reflex Arc Could Circle the Earth Three Times
Song Ziqing sat outside the office, legs crossed, munching on a large red apple. Seeing the person walking out in a daze, she gave a playful wave. “Did Niannian actually crawl?”
Lu Qinnian’s lips twitched. Looking at the grinning girl, she marched over in a fit of rage.
The onlookers held their breath, thinking to themselves, It’s over! Is the eldest daughter of the Lu family going to beat her sister in front of everyone? This Song Ziqing was simply too arrogant. How did she dare provoke her? Did she not understand her own place? She was merely an outsider fostered in the Lu home, treated like a youngest daughter out of pity.
Lu Qinnian raised her foot and slammed it heavily onto the chair right under Song Ziqing’s seat. She leaned forward, elbow resting on her knee, and snatched the hand holding the apple.
Song Ziqing glanced at the long legs pinned beside her, then looked up at Lu Qinnian’s flushed face—which still carried the lingering traces of the drug. She smiled sweetly. “Niannian is so cool. I love you so much.”
Lu Qinnian froze, her cheek twitching. What is this little ungrateful wolf trying to do? Confessing to me? If she really wanted this, why did she pass up the opportunity earlier? Was she trying to humiliate me on purpose?
Lu Qinnian snatched the apple from the girl’s grip and tossed it into the nearby bin. Song Ziqing watched her apple hit the trash with a look of pure sorrow before glaring back at her with resentment.
“It’s been sitting there for over a month; it’s not fresh,” Lu Qinnian said coldly. She retracted her foot, stuffed her hands into her pockets, and looked down at Song Ziqing from her superior height. “Wipe the chair. I’m taking you to eat something fresh.”
Song Ziqing was bewildered. She hurriedly grabbed a tissue to wipe the seat, then popped up like a spring, beaming at her. “Where are we going to eat?”
“The second-floor cafeteria is short a fruit washer. You can go wash them; that way, you can eat whenever you want.”
Lu Qinnian gave her a cold, dismissive look and turned to leave. Song Ziqing stood frozen in place before following after her in a fury.
“Lu Qinnian! You said you were going to train me! You can’t do this!”
Lu Qinnian stopped abruptly, and Song Ziqing bumped right into her back, messing up her low bun. Song Ziqing chuckled and reached out to pinch the bun back into place, looking up at the woman with a placating smile.
Lu Qinnian shoved her hand away with disgust. “The only reason I haven’t kicked you out is because I don’t want to upset the family. Saying I’d take you with me was only so I could monitor you and keep you from causing trouble. You didn’t actually think I was going to groom you, did you?”
Song Ziqing immediately hid her hands behind her back and shook her head with a grin. She actually had zero interest in working for the company. Besides, if you’re rich, who wants to work? She had no desire to become a financial tycoon or a corporate mogul.
“Stop smiling at me like that,” Lu Qinnian barked in a low, cold voice.
Song Ziqing wiped the smile off her face instantly. Lu Qinnian’s brow furrowed; the more obedient the girl became, the more she felt something was wrong and the more she loathed her. In her previous life, she had been fooled by this obedient act time and time again. It was her own soft-heartedness that allowed this girl to drag the Lu family into the abyss.
“You’d better forget everything that happened today. Otherwise, I’ll make you regret it!” Lu Qinnian said icily.
A chill washed over Song Ziqing, and she instinctively took a small step back, nodding quickly.
“Aren’t you going to the cafeteria yet?”
Song Ziqing’s heart sank. She looked at her in disbelief. “You’re serious?”
Lu Qinnian sized her up, her eyes filled with a mocking smile. “Don’t you love apples? There are plenty of fresh ones there.”
Song Ziqing: “…”
Lu Qinnian turned and walked away. Song Ziqing hissed through gritted teeth, shouting at the retreating figure as she entered the meeting room, “You’re using your position for a personal vendetta!”
Lu Qinnian ignored her entirely and entered the room. She had previously thought keeping the girl close would stop her from doing evil, but now she realized that being close was a danger in itself. If she could spike her coffee today, who knew what she would do tomorrow? Clearly, having her nearby was unsafe; she had to be pushed away.
However, throughout the hours-long meeting, Lu Qinnian found it impossible to concentrate. Perhaps it was the aftereffects of what happened in the office; her body felt weak and limp, and she looked visibly fatigued.
Even the other directors noticed something was off. Her assistant brought her a cup of hot water and took the chance to lean in and whisper, “Do you need a break?”
Lu Qinnian looked up at the other directors and gave a slight shake of her head. She straightened her clothes and forced herself to sit upright, trying to focus. But then, a sudden image of Song Ziqing staring at her on the bed with that wicked grin flashed through her mind. She instantly knit her brows.
That brat… how dare she play me?! Lu Qinnian ground her teeth in anger, her expression turning terrifyingly dark. The director currently speaking caught a glimpse of her face and felt a sudden chill, his voice stumbling over his words.
