- Chapter 53: (End of Main Story) - The Protagonist, Life's Ultimate Winner
In the end, Tang Suan ruthlessly rejected Tang Yi.
The once composed Tang Yi instantly panicked, knowing this was her last chance. Yet Tang Suan denied her even that.
Tang Suan, you’ve ruined everything! Tang Yi glared at Tang Suan’s profile, her face twisted with resentment.
Noticing Tang Yi’s venomous gaze, Tang Suan turned to meet her eyes. Tang Yi didn’t have time to hide her expression, leaving her hatred fully exposed.
Caught off guard, Tang Yi awkwardly averted her gaze. In the past, she would have lashed out at Tang Suan with a torrent of insults.
But times had changed. Not only was she now on Tang Suan’s territory, but Tang Suan was now the Empress Regnant, while she was merely a prisoner, dependent on the mercy of her captor.
Tang Suan saw Tang Yi’s humiliation and scoffed. Turning to her attendants, she ordered, “Untie her and release her.”
Tang Yi could hardly believe her ears. Tang Suan was actually letting her go?
“Are you serious?” Tang Yi asked, staring at Tang Suan in disbelief.
“Don’t wait for me to change my mind.”
After the ropes were untied, Tang Yi walked away without looking back. However, having been bound for so long, her body was stiff, and she stumbled as she walked.
Yet this did nothing to diminish her burning desire to escape. Before long, Tang Yi had left the place behind.
Watching Tang Yi’s retreating figure, Tang Suan’s subordinate asked, puzzled, “Your Majesty, are you truly going to let her go like this?”
Tang Suan smiled faintly. “Of course not.”
After leaving Tang Suan’s residence, Tang Yi staggered back to the General’s Residence, leaning against walls for support. Along the way, she repeatedly overheard people discussing Li Changsheng’s ascension to the Throne and his appointment of Shen Chou as Empress.
Perhaps fearing for their lives, not a single person dared to speculate that Li Changsheng had forced the abdication and forged the imperial edict to seize the Throne.
Everyone simply assumed that Li Changsheng, as the Crown Prince, had rightfully inherited the Throne.
Tang Yi, however, refused to believe this. Knowing Li Changsheng as she did, she would sooner believe he had eliminated all those who opposed her.
Before long, Tang Yi reached the entrance of the General’s Residence. Just as she was about to step inside, she looked up and saw a large contingent of guards stationed at the gate.
What was going on? Tang Yi froze in her tracks, staring in shock at the scene before her.
Is Li Changsheng planning to attack the General’s Residence? she wondered. Just as the thought crossed her mind, the guards at the gate turned their heads in her direction, and she quickly ducked out of sight.
At that moment, a young woman carrying a vegetable basket walked past her. Tang Yi, still hiding behind the wall, immediately grabbed her arm, seizing the opportunity to ask about the situation.
“Excuse me, Sister,” Tang Yi said, “I have a question for you.”
The woman stopped and turned to look at her. “Go ahead.”
“Do you know what those people outside the General’s Residence are doing?” Tang Yi asked, pointing toward the gate.
Following her gaze, the woman noticed the crowd surrounding the residence. She leaned in and whispered, “They’re the Emperor’s men. I heard they’re here to arrest someone.”
“Do you know who they’re after?” Tang Yi pressed.
The woman paused, thinking. “I heard they’re after the Second Miss of the General’s Residence. I can’t remember her name.”
“Tang Yi?” Tang Yi blurted out her own name.
Hearing her name, the woman exclaimed excitedly, “Yes, yes, that’s it! That’s the name!”
“Do you know why he’s trying to capture her?” Tang Yi asked anxiously. “Isn’t she his Secondary Consort?”
“Who knows?” Sister shrugged dismissively, rolling her eyes. “Maybe they’ve turned on each other. But what does it matter to us common folk?”
Sister’s words inadvertently sparked a realization in Tang Yi. It suddenly dawned on her: Li Changsheng was silencing her to eliminate witnesses.
Just then, Sister glanced at the wanted poster on the wall and then at Tang Yi standing before her. She noticed a striking resemblance between the woman in the portrait and the young woman before her.
Suddenly, Sister pointed at Tang Yi in disbelief. “You… you wouldn’t happen to be the Second Miss of the General’s Residence, would you?”
At this, Tang Yi jerked her head up and saw the wanted poster behind Sister. Her eyes widened at the sight of her own portrait. Glancing back at Sister, she quickly covered her face and stammered, “You’ve mistaken me for someone else. I’m not her.”
Without waiting for Sister’s response, she fled in a panic.
Just then, guards from the General’s Residence noticed the commotion. Seeing them approach, Tang Yi had no choice but to quicken her pace, running for her life without daring to stop for even a moment.
Tang Yi didn’t dare stop running until she reached a secluded spot where no one was around. Leaning against a wall, she finally caught her breath.
Meanwhile, at Tang Suan’s residence, Li Changsheng arrived almost immediately after Tang Yi left.
Tang Suan was about to return to her room when she heard the commotion. Turning around, she saw Li Changsheng entering.
The scene shifted to Tang Suan and Li Changsheng sitting in a pavilion, sipping tea and chatting.
“Your Highness…” Tang Suan began, then realized the man before her was no longer the Fifth Prince, but the Emperor himself. She quickly corrected herself, “Congratulations, Your Majesty!”
“And congratulations to you as well, Empress Regnant of Yun State,” Li Changsheng replied.
Tang Suan continued, “Has Your Majesty come to capture Tang Yi?”
“Indeed. I fear she might interfere with my plans,” Li Changsheng said, his eyes darkening.
“So Your Majesty intends to silence her permanently?” Tang Suan asked. “Unfortunately, you’re too late. I’ve already let her escape.”
“Is that so? How unfortunate,” Li Changsheng said, though his face showed no trace of regret.
Tang Suan studied him, sensing he already had a plan. “Does Your Majesty still remember the promise you made me?” she asked.
Li Changsheng turned to look at her.
Tang Suan opened her mouth slowly. “I remember Your Majesty promising me that once you ascended the Throne, you would make me Empress.”
“I remember,” Li Changsheng replied, “but I’ve already made Shen Chou Empress.”
Tang Suan’s tone turned playful. “Then isn’t Your Majesty going back on your word?”
Li Changsheng remained silent.
Tang Suan continued, her gaze fixed on him. “If I’m not mistaken, after Tang Yi, I’m next on your list, aren’t I?”
As she spoke, Tang Suan glanced around at the Li Dynasty soldiers surrounding them.
She turned back to Li Changsheng. “Too bad, Your Majesty can’t kill me.”
Li Changsheng looked up at her.
“You are now the supreme ruler of the Li Dynasty, and I am the Empress Regnant of Yun State. If anything were to happen to me here in the Li Dynasty, Yun State would not stand idly by.”
Tang Suan’s words were a clear warning: If you kill me, Yun State will avenge me.
Li Changsheng smiled. “I hear the Empress Regnant plans to return to Yun State in a few days?”
“That’s right,” Tang Suan replied. “I’ve stayed in the Li Dynasty far too long. It’s time to go back. Besides, there’s a mountain of urgent matters waiting for me in Yun State.”
She lifted her teacup and took a sip.
Li Changsheng watched her, fully aware that letting Tang Suan return was like releasing a tiger back into the mountains. The only way to prevent future trouble was to eliminate the threat entirely.
But Tang Suan knew this all too well, which was why she had spoken so frankly earlier.
If he let her go, she would return to Yun State and declare war on the Li Dynasty. If he kept her here, Yun State would soon demand her release.
Having just ascended the throne, Li Changsheng’s position was still precarious. Engaging in war at this critical moment would severely undermine his authority.
“Before you leave, Empress Regnant,” Li Changsheng said, “aren’t you planning to visit Shen Chou? I recall you two were quite close.”
“Close? Has Your Majesty forgotten? Shen Chou once considered me an enemy, even trying to drown me. Where does this talk of closeness come from? If he ever felt any affection, it was merely wishful thinking on his part.”
Tang Suan knew Li Changsheng was testing her. To protect Shen Chou and ensure her own safety, she deliberately spoke those words.
“Is that so? Perhaps I misremembered.”
Though Li Changsheng had only probed her briefly, Tang Suan suddenly worried he might target Shen Chou.
She had once believed that the most dangerous places were the safest, but now it seemed Shen Chou was in grave danger.
Despite Li Changsheng having made Shen Chou Empress, he might still sacrifice her if necessary. After all, if he dared disregard their past affection and try to harm Tang Suan, what wouldn’t he do?
The current Li Changsheng was truly ruthless, willing to stop at nothing to achieve his goals.
Fortunately, Tang Suan eventually returned to Yun State.
However, upon her arrival, she learned that the new Emperor of the Li Dynasty’s Empress had suddenly fallen ill and was bedridden. Tang Suan’s instincts told her this was no simple matter.
Sure enough, the secret agent she had sent to Yun State reported that Shen Chou was not actually ill but had been imprisoned by Li Changsheng.
The Empress Dowager was also being held captive.
It seemed Li Changsheng truly intended to harm Shen Chou.
Upon learning of Shen Chou’s peril, Tang Suan found herself utterly unable to focus. She desperately wished to be by Shen Chou’s side, protecting her.
After agonizing over the decision, Tang Suan finally ordered an attack on the Li Dynasty to rescue Shen Chou.
Former lovers, now enemies. The two sides clashed for two months. Initially, the Li Dynasty’s forces held the upper hand, but their morale soon crumbled, leading to their defeat. Under Tang Suan’s leadership, the Yun State’s troops advanced like a storm.
The Yun State soldiers won victory after victory. In less than half a year, they had conquered the Li Dynasty.
In truth, Li Changsheng had proposed peace talks, but Tang Suan had rejected them outright.
When Tang Suan, clad in blood-stained armor, once again entered the palace—once magnificent, now littered with corpses—she felt no remorse.
Her actions were driven not only by her desire to save Shen Chou, but also by her own ambition and selfish desires. She had to admit, she was no longer the untainted Tang Suan of old.
Through these trials, she had finally understood: the more one possesses, the more one craves. Humans are ultimately powerless against their own desires, becoming insatiable in their greed.
She understood this truth, yet felt powerless to change it. All she could do was repeatedly tell herself that her actions were justified. She was merely saving the people Li Changsheng had deceived and enslaved.
I’m not wrong. Everything I’ve done is right.
“A-Suan?” Shen Chou’s voice suddenly echoed through the hall.
Tang Suan startled, turning to see Shen Chou standing there, watching her.
Through Shen Chou, Tang Suan learned that Li Changsheng had fled the previous day.
“A-Suan, it’s been so long. I’ve missed you terribly,” Shen Chou said, embracing her.
Tang Suan stiffened momentarily before nodding. “I’ve missed you too.”
Unseen by Tang Suan, Shen Chou’s eyes filled with sorrow. The A-Suan she longed to protect was no longer the same.
The A-Suan before her now needed no protection. She was strong—so strong that Shen Chou felt like she barely knew her anymore.
What surprised Shen Chou even more was Tang Suan’s suggestion to consummate their marriage that very night. Though taken aback, Shen Chou shyly agreed.
That evening, Shen Chou sat on the edge of the bed, dressed in a crimson bridal gown and veiled with a red bridal veil, her heart pounding with nervous excitement as she awaited her groom’s arrival.
This time, her groom wasn’t Li Changsheng, but A-Suan, the man she had longed for. The thought made her feel as sweet as if she had tasted honey, her heart brimming with sweetness.
Soon, Shen Chou heard footsteps approaching. She knew it was Tang Suan.
The red veil was lifted. She instinctively looked up, her gaze meeting Tang Suan’s.
Tang Suan stood before her, resplendent in bridal attire, her beauty radiating both elegance and cool handsomeness.
“A-Suan…” Shen Chou murmured, her voice trembling with shyness.
“Mm,” Tang Suan nodded in acknowledgment.
Shen Chou whispered, “A-Suan, should we drink the nuptial wine first or consummate the marriage?”
“Ah—!”
The next moment, Shen Chou gasped as Tang Suan swept her off her feet.
Tang Suan murmured in her ear, “I want to consummate the marriage first. What about you, A-Chou?”
Flustered, Shen Chou’s cheeks flushed crimson as she stammered, “A-Suan, I… I don’t mind either way.”
Tang Suan smiled. “Such a good girl.”
With those words, she drew Shen Chou into her arms, pressing a tender kiss against her smooth, fair forehead.
As the saying goes, “A moment on the wedding night is worth a thousand gold.” Tang Suan intended to savor every precious second.
Shen Chou had no idea where Tang Suan had learned all these tricks. The endless array of techniques left her utterly defenseless, forcing her to repeatedly beg for mercy.
But Tang Suan, who had been starved for so long, wouldn’t let her off so easily. No matter how much Shen Chou pleaded, Tang Suan refused to relent.
“A-Suan, stop… uh-ah, I can’t take much more…”
To her surprise, her words only seemed to invigorate Tang Suan, who had been growing slightly weary.
The two continued their passionate entanglement late into the night before finally drifting off to sleep. At the first light of dawn, when someone called from outside, Tang Suan woke immediately.
Seeing Shen Chou beside her, just opening her sleepy eyes, Tang Suan couldn’t resist pulling her into another round of lovemaking.
I hope I won’t have to go through this every day, Shen Chou thought. As it turned out, that’s exactly how things would be.
Still, Tang Suan showed consideration for her partner, occasionally letting Shen Chou take the lead or allowing her to rest.
