Chapter 3: Great Northwest, Here We Go!
It was a corner of a box.
Who on earth buries a treasure chest vertically?
It had exhausted her. After much effort, she finally dug the treasure chest out and pried it open for a look: “Whoa~ I’m rich!”
It was filled to the brim with gold, silver, and jewelry. This sparkling scene was something she had only ever seen on television.
“Collect.”
The entire treasure chest vanished, taken into her space.
It was wonderful; traveling into a book had even brought her superpowers along. In that post-apocalyptic novel she came from, she had awakened space abilities and earth-system abilities. She wasn’t sure how a “paper person” (fictional character) managed to awaken them, but in the end, she had relied on these two powers to survive until the finale.
And then she traveled here! Amazing, truly amazing.
Having collected the treasure chest, Lin Ning did not linger. Before leaving, she used her earth-system ability to restore the scene to its original state.
Tsk tsk, truly a great support skill for “killing and looting.”
Shortly after Lin Ning left, a large group of people rushed from the Lu family to the old house. It was a pity Lin Ning didn’t see them. If she had, she would only have felt lucky that her movements were fast enough.
Back at the small inn, she slept while holding her fragrant and soft younger sister. Mmm, the “sister” felt really good to hold.
She slept until dawn.
Lin Ning took Gu Rou to the Educated Youth Office to register. When the staff member saw both of them signing up, they froze for a moment and reminded them: “Only one person per family needs to register.”
Lin Ning nodded to show she understood and explained: “There are only the two of us sisters left in our family; we don’t want to be separated.”
The staff member looked at them with eyes full of sympathy and quickly processed the relevant procedures for them. Lin Ning looked at the date on the papers: departure in three days.
That was fine; these three days could be used to prepare supplies, medicine, and find out when Father and Mother Gu would be departing.
However, she didn’t expect that plans wouldn’t keep up with changes. Father and Mother Gu were being relocated today, with the train leaving at 3:00 PM?
There was no other way; the matter of gathering supplies had to be put aside for now. Lin Ning took Gu Rou and hurried along, arriving at the train station before Father and Mother Gu. After buying their tickets, they waited in the waiting hall.
Gu Rou hadn’t seen her parents all night and didn’t know their current situation. She looked around anxiously. Lin Ning was much calmer and reminded her: “Even if you see them, you cannot acknowledge them. Especially since we haven’t left the city yet; not only can we not meet, we must stay hidden.”
It wasn’t that Gu Rou didn’t understand, but she squeezed the ticket in her hand and looked at her: “If that’s the case, why didn’t we leave earlier?”
Lin Ning looked at her with a hint of helplessness in her eyes: “Wasn’t it so you could get a glimpse of them, so you wouldn’t be constantly worried?”
Gu Rou’s eyes turned red again. “Sister, why are you so good?”
Lin Ning smiled and said nothing.
Soon, Father and Mother Gu were escorted into the station. Lin Ning spotted them instantly. Though they hadn’t seen each other for only one night, Father and Mother Gu seemed to have aged significantly. They wore only thin layers of clothing. It was fine during the day, but she feared they wouldn’t be able to hold out at night.
“Sister, it’s Dad and Mom…”
Gu Rou saw them too, and her eyes grew even redder. Especially looking at the clothes her parents wore and the white hair at their temples, her tears fell.
Lin Ning held her: “Alright, don’t cry. Once we reach the destination, no one will know us or our relationship, and we can secretly provide for them.”
At this moment, Gu Rou completely understood Lin Ning’s painstaking efforts. She also felt lucky that she had followed her “sister-in-law” out. Otherwise, if she had been relocated along with them, she wouldn’t have been able to help even if she wanted to.
“Sister-in-law, thank you. Truly, thank you!” Gu Rou leaned against her shoulder, thanking her in a small but firm voice.
Lin Ning was helpless. “Didn’t I say to call me ‘Sister’?”
Because Lin Ning and the others were hiding in a corner, Father and Mother Gu did not see them. After boarding the train, they weren’t in the same carriage. Father and Mother Gu thought Lin Ning had already returned to the Lin family and Gu Rou had married Zhao Wenbin. The old couple’s biggest concern now was their son.
“Woo~~~”
The train whistle sounded. Kuang-dang… kuang-dang…
The twelve-carriage “Green Skin” train swayed as it traveled along the tracks. Inside the carriages, the aisles were packed with people, and large and small bags of luggage were piled together. Everyone’s clothes were mostly dark-colored; the men wore Mao suits, and the women wore frog-buttoned tops and side-opening trousers.
Lin Ning sat leaning by the window, calculating their arrival time. They had departed so hurriedly that they hadn’t prepared anything. But Lin Ning had money. Even if resources were scarce in the Great Northwest, she wasn’t afraid. According to the timeline, they would arrive in the Great Northwest in the morning. She could buy supplies in the town first before reporting to the village. Since they were arriving three days early, they had plenty of time to prepare.
There was also the matter of housing. She didn’t want to live in the Educated Youth point. If possible, she wanted to rent a house so that it would be more convenient to help Father and Mother Gu. Mmm, she would discuss it with the Village Chief once they arrived.
Lin Ning thought about many things along the way—all sorts of major and minor matters, even thinking about Gu Rou’s marriage. But she didn’t think too deeply because she fell asleep.
The train ran for a day and two nights, finally arriving at the destination on the morning of August 18th. To avoid running into Father and Mother Gu, Lin Ning made Gu Rou wait until everyone else had disembarked before getting off.
“Let’s go. We’ll head to the town first to buy some supplies.” Lin Ning pulled her off the train.
Unexpectedly, it took an hour just to get from the train station to the town. From the town to the village, it required a two-hour walk. Lin Ning decisively bought a “Flying Pigeon” (28-inch) bicycle.
She then pushed the bike and went on a shopping spree: rice, flour, grain, oil, bedsheets, quilts, clothes, trousers, wound medicine, cold medicine, fever reducers… Everything was piled on the back seat of the bicycle, stacked as high as a person.
Looking at so many things, Gu Rou opened her mouth: “Sister, let me carry some.”
Lin Ning gripped the handlebars with both hands: “No need. You get on the bike, sit on the front bar, and I’ll carry you.”
Gu Rou was a bit doubtful: “Maybe I should just run along behind?”
Lin Ning: “Run for two hours? You’ll be exhausted. Hurry up. Don’t you want to see Mom, Dad, and your brother?”
Gu Rou stopped talking and nimbly climbed onto the crossbar. Lin Ning kicked off, and the bicycle started moving. Steady and reliable.
After pedaling for an hour, Gu Rou asked every now and then: “Sister, are you tired? How about I pedal for a while?”
Lin Ning indicated she wasn’t tired—it wasn’t as tiring as killing zombies. It was just that the weight balance between the front and back was uneven, making the bike a bit wobbly. But that didn’t matter; she could overcome it.
When they reached the village entrance, they saw the words carved into the roadside stone tablet: Da Liu Village.
Lin Ning stopped the bicycle, and she and Gu Rou got off to walk. It was currently noon, and every household was cooking or eating; there was no one on the road. As they walked, they saw a place labeled “Educated Youth Point.”
Lin Ning parked the bike and took a bottle of liquor and a pack of brown sugar from the back seat.
“Rou-rou, wait for me here. I’m going to find the Village Chief’s house.”
Gu Rou wanted to say she would go along, but she opened her mouth and said: “Okay, then I’ll wait for Sister here.”
Lin Ning smiled, tucked the liquor under her arm, and reached out to pat her head: “Be good, I’ll be right back.”
