Chapter 2: Emptying the Family Assets, Taking Away the Sister-in-Law
“Dad, don’t worry! I will take good care of Rou-rou.” As she spoke, her eyes darted around, and taking a step closer, she whispered, “Dad, where are those… less presentable things of our family kept?”
Father Gu’s eyes twitched, and the look he gave her was one of shock.
Lin Ning let out an “Aiya”: “Dad, didn’t you say it yourself? It’s better to give them to me than to have them confiscated.”
Father Gu opened his mouth, “How did you know…” that the Gu family had those things?
Lin Ning couldn’t say it was because she had read the original novel, so she could only offer a half-true, vague excuse. “I guessed. The Lu family’s things were exposed, right? That’s likely why this unmerited disaster was brought upon us.”
Father Gu’s eyes deepened. From the very first moment the news of the “downward relocation” arrived, he knew the reason. But he hadn’t expected Lin Ning, this child, to guess it too.
Was it really a guess?
Father Gu’s gaze carried a few more hints of suspicion.
Facing his doubtful look, Lin Ning said, “Dad, if you trust me, tell me the location. I guarantee that if the day comes when Gu Yan’s name is cleared, I will return every bit of it.”
Father Gu remained silent for a moment before asking, “You think Xiao Yan can be cleared?”
Lin Ning didn’t dare be too certain. Father Gu was an old fox; if she appeared too confident, it might actually ruin things.
“If he can’t be cleared, there’s still Rou-rou. I will return it to her all the same.”
Father Gu watched her, deep in thought for a moment, and then told her an address.
Lin Ning smiled, then gave him a very serious promise: “Dad, I won’t let you down.”
Once they had finished packing, Lin Ning took Gu Rou and snuck out of the house. However, just as Gu Rou tried to turn at the intersection to find Zhao Wenbin, Lin Ning grabbed her and pulled her away.
“Accompany me to the Civil Affairs Bureau to get a divorce first.”
Gu Rou was so angry she was about to cry again. Her chest heaved as she questioned, “Are you really in such a hurry? To think I thought you truly liked my brother and kept putting in good words for you…”
As Gu Rou nagged and accused her, Lin Ning pulled her into a run. What time did she think it was? There was no time for dilly-dallying.
They finally reached the Civil Affairs Bureau. At this hour, the bureau was already closed, but one person was hunched in the very back. Upon seeing them, he waved frantically.
“You’re finally here! If you were any later, I couldn’t have waited.” The speaker was ducked under a counter, obscuring his face; one could only see he was a man.
Lin Ning handed him the marriage certificate. “Quickly, process the divorce certificate first, then get me a household registration (hukou). After that, move Gu Rou’s registration to mine and change her name to Lin Rou.”
The man immediately took the certificate and began working busily, agreeing repeatedly.
Gu Rou was stunned, looking at Lin Ning in disbelief. “What is the meaning of this?”
Lin Ning didn’t even look at her; her eyes remained fixed on the man’s movements behind the counter. “I know you don’t want to stay in the city to be married off, so I plan to elope with you.”
Gu Rou grabbed her arm, looking completely helpless. “What exactly are you trying to do?”
Lin Ning turned her head, her gaze serious. “From now on, you are my younger sister, named Lin Rou. You have no connection to the Gu family. Even if you see other members of the Gu family, you must say this, do you understand?”
After speaking, she turned back to urge the man, “Hurry up, are you done?”
“Done, done. I really owe you one.” The man reached out a hand and handed over all the documents she needed.
Lin Ning snatched them up, checked for any errors, and said, “Thanks.” She grabbed Gu Rou and ran off.
Only after the two of them had vanished did the man sneak out from behind the counter. Looking at their departing figures, he whispered complexly, “Sister, this is all the help I can give you.”
Lin Ning and Gu Rou ran to a nearby small inn and checked into a standard room. Lin Ning pulled Gu Rou into the room, sat on the bed, and let out a long sigh of relief. “Ask whatever you want to ask.”
Gu Rou looked at her. “Are you… hiding something from me?”
Lin Ning smiled slightly. “Not too stupid, I see.”
Seeing this expression, Gu Rou was both angry and anxious. “You’re still laughing?”
Lin Ning surrendered: “Okay, okay. I plan to take you to the Great Northwest to become ‘Educated Youth’.”
Gu Rou froze; this was something she never would have imagined.
Lin Ning continued, “Your brother was slandered for collaborating with the enemy, and the Gu family is being relocated. You think it’s fine as long as the family stays together, and that relocation isn’t scary. But Rou-rou, when the nest is overturned, no eggs stay unbroken. We must secure ourselves first before we can help your brother and your parents.”
“I heard your brother is injured and his leg is broken. He likely won’t receive proper treatment. The money we bring out can buy medicine for him. The two of us can also earn work points to exchange for food and secretly provide relief to your brother and parents.”
“That is how a family truly stays together.”
As Lin Ning finished, Gu Rou was moved to tears again. She lunged forward, hugging Lin Ning and wailing, “Sister-in-law, I misunderstood you. You still love my brother. My brother marrying such a good wife is the blessing of eight lifetimes for our Gu family. Wooo… if my brother dares to treat you badly in the future, I’ll be the first to deal with him.”
The little girl was crying so loudly that Lin Ning was left speechless. Especially after hearing her over-interpreted speech, Lin Ning really wanted to say: No need, really no need! Your brother doesn’t like me, and I’m not the original owner of this body. The divorce is already done; why talk about the future?
“Uh, Rou-rou! You have to call me ‘Sister,’ not ‘Sister-in-law.’ You have to get used to this.”
Your future sister-in-law is Gu Yan’s white moonlight, and she’ll have twins in the future. Moreover, the reunion between the “white moonlight” and Gu Yan supposedly happens in the Great Northwest—she’s also an Educated Youth. Once they arrive, she’ll have to hide a bit; she can’t interfere with the development of the male and female leads, or she might end up being sent to prison.
Gu Rou, thinking she was just being cautious about the fake identity, nodded and said obediently, “I understand, Sister.”
Lin Ning smiled with satisfaction. “Alright, let’s sleep. Tomorrow I’ll take you to sign up.”
Gu Rou rubbed her eyes and looked at her piteously. “Can I sleep with you? I’m scared, Sister!”
Lin Ning: “…!”
Seeing this weak “Little White Flower” appearance, Lin Ning instantly understood why men liked this type. “Fine, you can hug me while we sleep.”
Lin Ning: Questioning men, understanding men, becoming a man, surpassing men.
The night was more than half over. Once Gu Rou was completely asleep, Lin Ning carefully extracted her arm from the girl’s embrace, dressed stealthily, and snuck out.
The address Father Gu gave her was the Gu family’s old residence. It wasn’t far from here. To avoid complications arising from a long delay, she would act tonight. She had to settle it quickly; if the little girl woke up and didn’t see her, she might think Lin Ning had abandoned her and run away.
The Gu family’s “old residence” was actually just a small, low house on another street. The place where the treasures were hidden was beneath the floor tiles of the kitchen.
Lin Ning pried and dug for an hour before she finally saw a corner of the treasure.
