- Chapter 6 - Punishment
Pei Yan gestured for the soldiers to pull the three individuals out, but unexpectedly, they became extremely emotional and resisted fiercely.
“What are you doing?!”
“Let go of me!!”
“I’m not infected!!”
Pei Yan said coldly, “Whether you are infected or not isn’t for you to decide. Take them down for blood testing first.”
Seeing signs of restlessness brewing in the crowd, Pei Yan announced loudly, “They are likely suspected infected persons among you. To ensure accuracy, we are taking them to the research center for testing first. Please wait a little longer; once the results are out, you can all leave.”
Pei Yan was eighty percent certain, but since this was his first time using this ability, he ordered the mercenaries to take them for blood tests just to be safe.
However, some remained skeptical. “How can you guarantee there aren’t more suspected cases among us?”
“Exactly! Isn’t this just a show you’re putting on to keep us quiet?”
Pei Yan didn’t want to waste words with them. “If you don’t believe me, you are free to leave this place and seek shelter elsewhere.”
“You!” The man’s eyes widened, fuming with rage. “Is that any way to speak to civilians?”
“If you want me to respect you, you must first learn to respect me and follow my rules. Otherwise, even if you leave the Northern Base, you will eventually run into me at another base.”
“……”
The three were brought to the research institute. They saw soldiers with long rifles guarding both sides, as if they would open fire immediately if the results showed anything abnormal.
Before the blood tests could even be performed, they broke down.
One woman even fell to her knees, crawling toward Pei Yan before being blocked by a soldier’s rifle. She wailed, “I didn’t mean to hide it. I just… I just didn’t want to die! I have a child; he’s still so small.”
Pei Yan: “…”
She kowtowed repeatedly. “Please, give me a way to live.”
Pei Yan looked down, saying cruelly, “But if you go back, you won’t just kill your own child; you will harm even more innocent people.”
The woman stopped kowtowing. She looked up to see a dark muzzle pressed against her forehead. She heard the man say decisively, “So, you must die.”
He fired without hesitation.
The woman fell over, her eyes wide with lingering resentment. The other two were also shot in the head by the base mercenaries.
The Base Leader asked, “Does that mean the people in the isolation zone can be released?”
Pei Yan tucked his gun away. “Release them.”
The Base Leader was overjoyed. “Commander Pei, Lieutenant General Lu, I’ll go handle that now?”
Lu Xiao nodded.
The matter was settled for now.
The testing department of the research institute quickly emptied. Lu Xiao opened his mouth, but before he could say anything, the base alarm blared. The two of them rushed onto the warship and threw themselves back into the battlefield.
From then on, they repeated the cycle: killing Zerg, resting, patrolling, killing Zerg…
Three days passed in this manner.
At night, while Pei Yan was leading his troops on a patrol by the sea, he suddenly heard a slight movement in the water. He focused his mind, raised his gun, and slowly approached.
To his surprise, he didn’t sense any abnormal mental fluctuations. Instead, he felt a very comfortable aura. Simultaneously, his palm began to tingle with warmth.
Pei Yan’s eyes widened slightly.
A ridiculous thought gradually surfaced in his mind.
Could it be Xie Yu? Did he come looking for him?
The next second, he dismissed it.
How was that possible? The Imperial City was so far from the Northern Base. It had taken him nearly an entire night to fly here by warship. Moreover, Xie Yu had no connections in the capital; if he wanted to come, he’d practically have to swim.
Pei Yan felt like mocking himself. They had only been apart for a few days—why was he missing him so much?
But a voice in his heart told him: It is Xie Yu.
As ridiculous as it seemed, he really had swum here to find him.
Thinking of this, Pei Yan stopped his pace and ordered his subordinates to search elsewhere. Once they were gone, Pei Yan turned his gaze back to the sea.
He swallowed hard, holstered his gun, and walked forward with a hint of anticipation.
The sea was calm and waveless. He scanned the surface back and forth, but there was no sign of the familiar figure.
Pei Yan smiled helplessly.
Just as he thought—how could it be?
He turned to leave, but as soon as he turned around, he discovered a figure pressed right behind him. Before he could react, he was pulled into a damp, familiar embrace.
It was Xie Yu.
He really had come for him.
Touched as he was, did he have to press Pei Yan’s face against his bare chest?!
Xie Yu’s aggrieved voice drifted over, “Brother is so cruel, leaving me all alone at home.”
Pei Yan’s feelings were strange. He wasn’t sure what he was feeling at this moment or how to express it.
Seeing no reaction, Xie Yu bit down softly on Pei Yan’s earlobe as if throwing a tantrum.
Pei Yan’s body flinched. He quickly pushed Xie Yu away and covered his ear, his face flushing deep red. “What are you doing?”
Xie Yu chuckled softly. “Punishing Brother for leaving me home alone.”
Pei Yan glared at him. “It wasn’t on purpose. It was a sudden emergency; I didn’t have time to go home and say goodbye.”
“I don’t care.” Xie Yu spread his hands, acting like a rogue.
Pei Yan: “…”
“And does Brother know? To find you, I swam for a very long time. I don’t know how many eye-rolls I got from marine creatures while asking for directions. I suffered so much…”
He leaned limply against Pei Yan. “Brother must compensate me properly.”
Pei Yan sighed. Regardless of anything else, Xie Yu really had endured a lot of hardship just to find him.
“How do you want me to compensate you?”
Sensing Pei Yan’s softening attitude, Xie Yu raised his eyebrows high. “I want Brother to kiss me.”
Pei Yan: “…”
He was wrong. He shouldn’t have played along with this yellow croaker’s words.
Seeing Pei Yan’s sour expression, Xie Yu perceptively changed the compensation. “Then how about another hug?”
Without waiting for Pei Yan’s consent, he wrapped one arm around Pei Yan’s waist and the other around his back, pulling him tightly against himself. He tightened his grip inch by inch, wishing their bodies could fuse into one.
He leaned into Pei Yan’s ear, his voice lingering and husky.
“Brother, I missed you so much.”
Pei Yan was being squeezed so hard he could barely breathe. He originally wanted to pat Xie Yu to get him to loosen up, but hearing those words, he froze and eventually let his hand drop.
Fine, let him hug. It’s not like I’ll lose a limb.
The two stood pressed together. It was unclear whose heart was beating so violently.
Thump… Thump…
One beat after another echoed in Pei Yan’s ears, restless and persistent.
After staying together for a while, Pei Yan had to head back. Xie Yu wanted to follow, but Pei Yan strongly forbade it.
Xie Yu blinked innocently.
Pei Yan looked at the sky; acting cute wouldn’t work.
It was a joke—if he actually brought him back, how would he explain Xie Yu’s sudden appearance to Lu Xiao?
Magic?
At the mention of Lu Xiao’s name, Xie Yu’s eyes darkened for a few seconds. His tail coiled around Pei Yan, refusing to let him go.
In the end, Pei Yan had to promise that if nothing was happening, he would come to see him every night.
Xie Yu knew the reason, of course, but he simply didn’t want his brother to be with Lu Xiao. Just thinking about it made him speculate how Lu Xiao might be trying to seduce his brother.
When dealing with a rival, one always speculates with malice, especially since those two were often alone together.
Even though he knew that, given Lu Xiao’s personality, he wouldn’t do anything underhanded.
Xie Yu still couldn’t stop his thoughts.
But it wouldn’t be good to keep causing a scene. Not only would it yield no practical results, but it might also make his brother feel disgusted.
So, after much consideration, he finally released his tail reluctantly. “Brother, I will be here waiting for you every night.”
Pei Yan: “…”
I feel like you’re trying to gain my sympathy, but I have no proof.
Since Xie Yu’s arrival, Pei Yan’s dull and repetitive life had gained a bit of flavor.
On another evening, because there had been no Zerg harassment during the day, the subordinates felt inspired to have a barbecue with some fried skewers.
Pei Yan was dragged into the gathering, and wherever Pei Yan was, Lu Xiao was bound to be.
A dozen or so people were eating and roasting together boisterously.
Pei Yan suddenly thought of Xie Yu. He wondered if that guy liked this kind of food.
Maybe… he should bring him some later?
Halfway through the meal, sensing that this group would be eating for a long time, Pei Yan grabbed a few skewers of fish and meat.
A subordinate asked curiously, “Boss, where are you going?”
Pei Yan said calmly, “Just going for a walk.”
Lu Xiao made a move to stand up. “I’ll go with you.”
“Don’t!” Pei Yan rejected him hastily.
Lu Xiao: “…”
Realizing his tone was too urgent, Pei Yan added, “No need. I’ll just wander around by myself for a bit and be right back.”
With that, he took the skewers and turned to run.
He left behind a group of bewildered subordinates and an unhappy Lu Xiao.
“Tsk.” A slick-looking subordinate rubbed his chin, pondering. “Do you guys think the Boss is in a relationship?”
The other gossips immediately huddled closer. “What makes you say that?”
Lu Xiao’s body tensed up, but his ears instinctively strained toward them.
“Think about it. Lately, the Boss goes out every single night. Even during that heavy rain the other day, he didn’t miss a beat. And just now, he had a handful of skewers, and when faced with Lieutenant General Lu’s… uh…”
He paused, glancing cautiously at Lu Xiao. Seeing no reaction, he felt safe to continue. “When faced with the Lieutenant General’s invitation to walk, he rejected it so fast. That speed—there’s definitely something fishy!”
“Hey, now that you mention it, it does seem that way…”
“Right? I just wonder which family’s Omega it is who could charm the Boss so much that he can’t even sleep without seeing them for a day…”
“I bet it’s a soft and pretty Omega. They’re meeting secretly every night. Who knows, one of these days they might lose control and start a fire… hehe.”
Lu Xiao’s hands clenched tightly at his sides, his gaze turning increasingly gloomy.
Who was it?
He and Pei Yan were glued together every day—how had he not noticed?
Was it that Omega they rescued last time who invited them for tea?
Or the one from the time before that who treated them to dinner?
Or was it that Alpha from three rescues ago?!
Someone suggested, “How about we sneakily follow him next time?”
“That’s a great idea.”
Lu Xiao stood up coldly and said, “Do you all have nothing better to do? Do you want me to give you some extra assignments?”
“No, no, no… that won’t be necessary.”
The subordinates scooped up the remaining skewers and fled at top speed.
