- Chapter 59 - The Drunkenness
Jiang Yao was startled by this thought. The pastry got stuck directly in her throat, causing her to cough repeatedly, her face turning red.
Xie Yunian, hearing her cough, slightly furrowed his brow. She was fine just a moment ago. Why did she suddenly choke? With such little courage, how did she have the audacity to imagine so much?
“Eat slowly,” Xie Yunian handed her a cup of water, his tone flat. “No one is snatching it from you.”
“I know.” Jiang Yao reached out to take the water. Her fingertips accidentally brushed his, and the slightly cool touch sent a strange shiver through her. Once the warm water settled in her stomach, the discomfort finally eased somewhat.
Even after the dishes were all served, Jiang Yao still kept glancing at Xie Yunian, her expression hesitant. Her fingers unconsciously rubbed the edge of the wine pot, her mind churning. This is too absurd.
Xie Yunian noticed her gaze. He looked up at her and said plainly, “Something wrong?”
Jiang Yao looked at the Drunken Immortal Brew by her hand and had an idea. Since Xie Yunian believed she liked him, she might as well use the liquor as an excuse to gain some ground. She hesitated for a moment, finally summoning the courage to pick up the wine pot, pour herself a cup, and then pour one for Xie Yunian. “Xie Lang, it is a rare opportunity for just the two of us today. Shall we have a drink?”
Xie Yunian glanced at her, a hint of scrutiny flashing in his eyes, as if guessing what she was scheming. She didn’t ask why he was here, nor why he was injured. Yet she insisted on dining and drinking with him?
Jiang Yao didn’t overthink it. She raised her cup and drained it, then immediately poured herself another. While drinking, she didn’t forget to secretly observe Xie Yunian’s reaction. Seeing him unmoved, she secretly calculated that she needed to try harder.
After two cups of wine, a faint blush appeared on Jiang Yao’s face. She deliberately swayed her body, feigning a slightly drunk appearance, and muttered softly, “Xie Lang, you’ve lost your memory, so why won’t those people leave you alone!” Jiang Yao’s tone was indignant, mixed with a hint of resentment.
Safety first. If Xie Yunian knew all of this was fabricated by her, he might skin her alive, and it wouldn’t be enough to appease his anger.
“Hmm?” Xie Yunian looked up, his gaze falling on the flush beneath Jiang Yao’s eyes. He averted his eyes, his expression unchanged, his voice calm. “Which people?”
Jiang Yao let out a soft “humph,” her tone carrying a complaint. “Who else could it be? You grew up on the border. Naturally, you don’t understand these twists and turns in the capital.” She finished, then drained the wine in her cup again, muttering in her heart, How could he not understand? He understands all too well.
Xie Yunian didn’t reply, just watching her quietly, a subtle smile flickering in his eyes.
Seeing his silence, Jiang Yao felt a little uneasy, yet she continued to feign indignation. “You were summoned to the capital when you were barely fifteen. Wasn’t it to keep you here as a hostage to contain your uncle? You clearly made concessions everywhere and avoided conflict, so why do they still insist on driving you to ruin!” Hmph, made concessions everywhere. Jiang Yao covered her face with both hands, pretending to sob twice.
Seeing her cry, Xie Yunian uncomfortably tucked his legs back. “Did ‘I’ tell you all this?”
“Of course!” Jiang Yao looked up, a hint of grievance in her eyes. “Xie Lang, you’ve had such a hard life all these years…” With that, Jiang Yao quickly drank two more cups.
Xie Yunian frowned, stopping her attempt to pour more wine. “You are drunk.”
“I’m not drunk! I just feel… hiccup… it’s unfair for you.” Jiang Yao feigned distress. This wine wasn’t strong; two cups wouldn’t be enough to get her drunk. However… Jiang Yao waved her hand, pretending to be confused. “I’m not drunk… I just feel that you alone… bearing so much, it must be very hard…”
As she spoke, she leaned closer to Xie Yunian, reaching out to peel open his collar. Xie Yunian was momentarily stunned by her sudden proximity. Jiang Yao used her “drunkenness” to continue leaning closer, her mind, however, focused on one thing: she wanted to see what kind of clothes could possibly be worth ten taels of gold.
Xie Yunian had completely underestimated a drunk Jiang Yao’s audacity. Under the candlelight, Jiang Yao’s cheeks were lightly flushed, and her eyes held a hint of intoxication, making her appear exceptionally charming and fetching. Her fingers touched his collar, her fingertips slightly hot, carrying an unintended provocation. Xie Yunian’s breath hitched slightly. His gaze fell on her face, his eyes deepening in color.
Yet, Jiang Yao’s heart was only filled with regret over the ten taels of gold. This money was won by her sister in the riddle contest. She should pay her sister back later.
Just then, a commotion suddenly erupted outside the door. Following that were the guards’ shouts: “Search! Search room by room! Do not let any suspicious person escape!”
Jiang Yao’s heart leaped into her throat. She instinctively tightened her grip on his collar, her eyes fixed on the door.
Moments later, the voice of the Pavilion of Immortal Gathering’s manager came from outside the door. “Shhh! This room holds Young Master Xie of the Chengbo Marquis Manor!”
The guard seemed startled for a moment. Recalling the orders from above, he still called out, unwilling to give up, “We ask for Young Master Xie’s understanding. We are acting under imperial decree and must conduct a search.”
“Enter,” Xie Yunian said lazily, his voice tinged with impatience. He lowered his gaze to Jiang Yao, his heart slightly moved.
The door was slowly pushed open. Xie Yunian suddenly reached out and pulled Jiang Yao halfway into his arms. Jiang Yao was caught off guard, tumbling onto his lap, her face burying itself in Xie Yunian’s chest. Her nose was instantly filled with his clean, cool scent. Her heartbeat abruptly quickened, and her cheeks instantly flushed. Only then did she realize how intimate their posture was, and an indescribable flutter arose in her heart.
The guard pushed the door open and saw Xie Yunian leaning back lazily in the chair, an arm draped around a woman. The woman only showed a head of dark, long hair, their posture intimate. The leading guard scanned the room. Finding nothing unusual, he cleared his throat and cupped his hands. “Young Master Xie, pardon the interruption.”
Xie Yunian looked up, his tone impatient. “Are you finished searching? If so, get out immediately.”
The guards flinched under his gaze. They quickly bowed their heads. “Yes, we apologize for the intrusion.” With that, they quickly retreated, not forgetting to close the door behind them.
The room returned to silence, only the flickering candlelight illuminating the two of them.
“They’ve left. You can get up now.”
Jiang Yao finally snapped back to reality. She quickly struggled out of his embrace and returned to her seat, her eyes darting away. He was clearly the fugitive, so why was she the one who was nervous?
Xie Yunian saw her expression and lightly curved his lips. “Miss Jiang is awake?”
Hearing this, Jiang Yao’s cheeks flushed further. She stammered, “They were too scary.” Her voice trailed upwards, sounding like a plea. She quickly lowered her head, pretending to adjust her sleeve, her mind in a jumble.
Xie Yunian chuckled lightly, no longer teasing her. He reached for the wine pot and poured himself a cup of wine. “It’s getting late. I will escort you back.”
Jiang Yao nodded, but her heart still couldn’t settle down. This act, it seemed, had gone a bit too far.
