- The Supporting Female Character Enters the Game, the Crazy Crown Prince Slowly Falls Deeply in Love
- Chapter 52 - Innate Chivalry
Wei Yuning was momentarily speechless, secretly wondering: Didn’t Mother say that Jiang Yao and Old Madam Jiang had a poor relationship?
She had planned to seize the opportunity to curry favor with Old Madam Jiang and then probe for a path into the Xie family. Even becoming a concubine in a high-ranking family was much better than marrying into a poor family as the main wife. She didn’t want to live this dependent life anymore.
But why did it seem otherwise now…?
After just a few words, Old Madam Jiang fully understood Wei Yuning’s intentions. When she spoke again, her tone was slightly distant, “Young Master Xie is, after all, from a military family. He is innately chivalrous and accustomed to rescuing people in peril; it is a common occurrence. You do not need to dwell on it too much. Furthermore, once he becomes engaged to Yao’er, there will be even less reason to bring up these matters.”
“Grandmother is right,” Jiang Yao heard a light laugh spill from her throat.
Innate chivalry?
Her expression remained unchanged, but she repeated these four words in her mind. Her mind flashed back to that cold face. She also recalled the emotionless eyes she had encountered a few days ago when she was half-asleep and half-awake.
What decent person feeds medicine with such a cold face? Otherwise, she wouldn’t have mistakenly thought it was poison and been needlessly frightened for so long.
Grandmother has truly misjudged him this time.
Old Madam Jiang’s words were blunt. The shy expression on Wei Yuning’s face instantly froze. She quickly lowered her head and said, “The Old Madam is correct. Yuning is merely grateful and has no other intentions.”
Jiang Yao gently put down her teacup, looked up at Wei Yuning, a smile playing on her face. “Cousin, instead of thinking about these things, why don’t you think about what gift to send your little sister then? But there’s no need to send one to Young Master Xie.”
“After all,” Jiang Yao said with clear meaning, “if everyone was as unforgettable as Cousin Yuning, wouldn’t he be unable to keep track of all the gifts?”
Wei Yuning tightly gripped her sleeve, forcing out a smile. “Little Sister Yao’er is joking. I will certainly prepare a gift then.”
The atmosphere in the hall was momentarily heavy. Old Madam Jiang gently patted Jiang Yao’s hand and smiled. “It’s about time. Your mother should have finished preparations. Let’s go over.”
Jiang Yao nodded, supported Old Madam Jiang’s arm, and slowly walked towards the main hall.
Wei Yuning stood rooted to the spot, a flash of unwillingness in her eyes. Why? Jiang Yao is just a concubine-born daughter, not even as good as me. Why does she receive Young Master Xie’s favor?
There was still some distance to the main hall. Jiang Yao walked slowly with Old Madam Jiang on her arm. The autumn wind gently brushed past, bringing a slight chill. Old Madam Jiang slightly narrowed her eyes and suddenly spoke, “How much older is that Wei girl than you?”
Jiang Yao thought for a moment and softly replied, “About three years older, she should be nineteen this year.”
Old Madam Jiang gave a slight smile, her tone carrying a hint of understanding. “No wonder she’s so anxious, even setting her sights on an old woman like me.”
Jiang Yao paused slightly, turning to look at Old Madam Jiang, a little surprised. “Grandmother, you… guessed it all?”
Old Madam Jiang lightly patted the back of her hand, her tone calm. “They are mother and daughter accustomed to being dependent on others; naturally, they are unwilling to marry into just any ordinary family.”
“Madam Wei wants to marry into a high-ranking family with a distinguished background to escape her current predicament. Coming to accompany me every day is merely to leverage your father’s influence to seek a marriage arrangement.” She paused, sighed, and her voice held a touch of helplessness. “Your mother is kind-hearted, thinking they are poor and without support, and that’s why she’s helping to arrange things.”
Listening to this, Jiang Yao couldn’t help but complain in her heart: Wasn’t this also talking about the original owner? High-minded and ambitious, wanting to climb the high branch of the Regent Prince and become a phoenix on the branch.
In this light, this Wei Yuning seemed to be playing the role of a cannon fodder female supporting character, too. Thinking of this, a sense of absurdity arose in Jiang Yao’s mind. She was now tied to the same rope as Xie Yunian. She didn’t know if it was a blessing or a misfortune.
“Hmm? What’s wrong?” Old Madam Jiang noticed Jiang Yao’s expression seemed off.
Jiang Yao quickly lowered her head, feigning a docile look, and continued softly, “But the noble families in the capital are deeply entrenched. If she lacks genuine talent and learning, how can she catch their eye with just a pretty face?”
Hearing this, a flash of approval crossed Old Madam Jiang’s eyes. Her tone was gentle but held a hint of instruction. “What you said is correct. That girl Yuning, although she has some looks, is too cunning, and her conduct is not straightforward enough. Such a person, even if they gain influence for a time, will ultimately find it difficult to last long.”
She paused, her tone solemn. “Yao’er, you must remember, sincerity is paramount in life. Those with corrupt intentions will ultimately find it hard to achieve great things.”
Jiang Yao held Old Madam Jiang’s arm, gently resting her head on her shoulder. “Yao’er will always remember Grandmother’s words.” She understood that Old Madam Jiang was worried she might not understand this type of situation, which is why she was explaining it so clearly.
Old Madam Jiang smiled, reaching out to gently stroke her hair bun, her tone loving. “You are a smart child. Grandmother is just afraid you might be deceived by them. In the future, you must be more vigilant in your dealings with people.”
Jiang Yao nodded, her voice firm. “Grandmother, don’t worry. If anyone harbors ill intent, Yao’er will not allow them to act recklessly.”
Old Madam Jiang nodded in satisfaction, her eyes filled with comfort. “Good, good. Now that you think this way, Grandmother is relieved.”
As they spoke, they had reached the entrance of the main hall. The hall was brightly lit, and the flickering candlelight made the entire space feel warm. As Jiang Yao helped Old Madam Jiang slowly walk in, she happened to run into Madam Liu, who was standing by the door.
Madam Liu saw Old Madam Jiang enter, her face full of delight. She quickly stepped forward to help her. “Mother, you’ve finally arrived! Your daughter-in-law will help you over!”
Jiang Yao wasn’t annoyed at being squeezed out by Madam Liu and simply went to sit next to Jiang Ying.
“Did you run into Cousin Yuning again just now?” Jiang Ying whispered when she saw her come over. Jiang Ying had only seen Aunt Wei by her mother’s side just now and guessed that Wei Yuning had gone to find Grandmother again.
Jiang Yao nodded, secretly giving her a thumbs-up under the table.
Madam Liu helped Old Madam Jiang sit in the main seat. Her peripheral vision caught Madam Wei entering with Wei Yuning, and she went over to hold Madam Wei’s hand, smiling widely. “This must be Sister Wei? I haven’t had the pleasure of seeing you for days, but today I finally get to! Your daughter is truly lovely and graceful.”
Living in the same manor, it wasn’t that she hadn’t had the chance to see her; it was clearly that Madam Liu looked down on the mother and daughter, which is why she hadn’t invited them. However, one shouldn’t strike a smiling face. Madam Wei smiled gently, speaking politely to her in a low voice.
Wei Yuning stood obediently beside her mother, her head slightly bowed, a faint smile on her lips, appearing exceptionally submissive.
Madam Liu turned and smiled at Old Madam Jiang, saying, “Mother, look at Sister Wei’s daughter. She is truly obedient and sensible; she is sure to be blessed in the future.”
Old Madam Jiang sat in the main seat, her gaze sweeping over the mother and daughter. “Alright. Since it is a family banquet, there’s no need to be so reserved. Please take your seats.”
