- Chapter 16 - If This Is a Dream, Don't Wake Me Up
“What have you been saying all this time, Al? You’re acting strange.”
Jimena’s anxious words no longer reached Arsenio’s ears. As if seeing a phantom, he staggered quickly to Rubia’s front and embraced her body tightly.
“Please. If this is a dream, don’t ever let me wake up…”
His voice was too serious, too desperate for her to deny him immediately. Rubia could only gasp and accept his embrace.
“I’ve seen you in my dreams, over and over. But no matter how many times I called for you in my dreams, you never answered. I’ve wanted to see you for so, so long. —I wanted to see you. Rubia…!!”
Though his voice cracked and trembled, Arsenio called her name with enough strength to deny any doubt.
When Rubia pulled back in surprise at the wet sensation on her shoulder, she saw tears falling from his golden eyes.
His expression, a mixture of longing and regret, struck her heart.
Before she knew it, Rubia had taken out a handkerchief and was wiping his face as tears continued streaming down his cheeks.
“Please don’t cry, Lord Arsenio.”
Gently, soothingly. Just as she had done for him when he was an eight-year-old boy, Rubia stood slightly on her toes and naturally stroked Arsenio head.
Any thought of not revealing her reincarnation vanished instantly before his tears.
Rubia hadn’t known.
She had never imagined until this moment just how much loneliness her death had caused him.
Otherwise, how could she have ever thought she could simply live comfortably as a decorative wife?
“This isn’t a dream. Rubia is right here. See? I’m warm, aren’t I?”
“Yeah… yeah…”
Crying like a child, Arsenio nodded repeatedly.
Seeing Arsenio’s tears, something she hadn’t even witnessed back then made Rubia feel like crying too.
“…I’m sorry. I couldn’t come within ten seconds. I made you wait quite a while, didn’t I?”
Remembering how the eight-year-old him had said, ‘When I call, come within ten seconds,’ Rubia deliberately spoke in a light tone.
Taking both of Arsenio’s hands, she squeezed them tightly as if conveying her warmth.
His hands, which had once been small enough to fit in her palms, were now too large for her hands to fully hold. His hands—smooth for a man’s, yet with long, bony fingers—squeezed hers back.
“It’s fine! Just being able to meet you again makes sixteen years feel like an instant.”
Eventually stopping his tears, he sniffled his reddened nose and narrowed his moist eyes gently.
“It’s really you, Rubia.”
“Yes. Even I find it strange. But how did you know it was ‘me’?”
Certainly, the current Rubia closely resembled the deceased Rubia in appearance. But even so, no one would seriously believe in reincarnation.
Much less speak and act with the certainty Arsenio had shown from earlier.
“Of course, I’d know at a glance. You’re my wife, after all.”
Uttering words that both answered and didn’t answer, Arsenio smiled. Though he had been quite the handsome boy in his youth, the arrogance of those days had completely vanished.
Combined with his languid aura and softened tone, he gave the impression of a beautiful young man like flowing water.
“But what a shame. If I’d known my bride was you, I would have refused that monster subjugation order and come to greet you.”
“But I’m proud of you, Lord Arsenio, for carrying out your duties so splendidly.” “Really? …Hearing you say that makes me incredibly happy.”
It seemed Arsenio had become much more honest over these sixteen years.
In the past, he would have turned away saying, ‘Even if you praise me, it doesn’t make me happy or anything!’ But now, he wore a shy, melting smile and looked straight at Rubia.
Rubia, too, was just a girl who had recently turned sixteen.
Even with memories of her past life, she had only recalled them very recently.
She had no particular resistance to men, and certainly no experience being smiled at by such a handsome face.
Facing the grown Arsenio, it was no wonder her heart raced and her cheeks flushed.
Her heart fluttered with emotions she’d never felt before, and just as she unintentionally averted her eyes from him.
“Miss Rubia, what did you do to Al?”
Her eyes met Jimena’s gaze, which looked at her as if she were a monster.
