- Chapter 5 - Mutual Aid and Scent
Lin Yan snapped back to reality. Realizing how ambiguous his current posture with Ning Youji appeared, his body stiffened. His mind began racing like clockwork to find a way out of the situation.
A flash of inspiration hit him. He suddenly jerked his head to the side and reached out, tightly grabbing Ning Youji’s collar. He put on an expression that screamed, “We cannot live under the same sky; it’s either you or me!”
A moment ago, Wang Feng-hai had seen what looked like a shy, blushing student. In the blink of an eye, the boy had transformed back into a fierce bully, baring his fangs as if he were about to devour someone.
“Damn it! If I don’t fight you today, I’ll give up my title as school bully! How dare you look down on Omegas, you piece of social trash!” Lin Yan shouted, pulling back a fist as if he truly intended to strike.
The onlookers were stunned. The change in atmosphere had happened so fast it gave them whiplash.
“Lin Yan, do you really think no one can handle you?” Wang Feng-hai rushed forward to pull the two apart. He scolded Lin Yan relentlessly, “Put your fist down this instant! Look at how you’ve terrified Student Ning. All you ever think about is fighting!”
Wang Feng-hai had dealt with Lin Yan many times before. He knew the boy’s temper was untamable. He figured he must have been seeing things earlier to think there was something going on between Lin Yan and Ning Youji.
Lin Yan glared viciously at Ning Youji. “Supervisor Wang, move aside! I’m not finished with him!” He was determined to play the part to the end.
“That’s enough out of you!” Wang Feng-hai delivered a light smack to the back of Lin Yan’s head. “Classmates should get along. Stop trying to pick a fight with everyone.”
The supervisor pressed Lin Yan’s fist down and got to the point. “Every student who released pheromones or participated in the brawl, come to my office for a talk!”
A large group of students let out a collective sigh of misery.
In the office, Ning Youji’s height made him stand out like a beacon among the crowd. Wang Feng-hai spotted him immediately. “Ning Youji, why are you joining this nonsense? Why aren’t you back in evening self-study? Is standing here making you look better?”
Seeing that Ning Youji didn’t move, the supervisor urged him again. “Go on, get out. Don’t let them interfere with my heart-to-heart talk.”
Everyone, including Ning Youji, remained silent. Ning Youji gave a faint “Oh” in response. Under the gaze of many eyes, he slowly strolled toward the door.
Behind him, Wang Feng-hai’s voice roared, “Which one of you released the high-concentration pheromones? Step forward! Whoever has the sandalwood scent, get over here! You’ve got a lot of nerve ignoring school rules!”
Ning Youji stopped in his tracks, turned around, and walked back in. Wang Feng-hai glared at him. “What are you doing? I told you to leave!”
Ning Youji replied calmly, “I was the one who released the high-concentration pheromones.” He paused, then added, “The sandalwood scent.”
His magnetic voice was low, making it easy for others to assume he had been bullied or forced into a corner. Wang Feng-hai frowned, thinking about how his star student must have been mistreated. In the eyes of most teachers, high-achieving students are easily bullied and need protection; Wang Feng-hai was no exception. Since Ning Youji was the pride of the school, the supervisor took a righteous stand.
“Don’t worry, the teacher will give you justice,” Wang Feng-hai declared. “These brats must have bullied you. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have broken the rules.”
The crowd thought: It really is a world that only cares about faces.
Wang Feng-hai started with the main culprit. “Lin Yan, come here!” He was certain Lin Yan’s earlier outburst was related to the incident. “Lin Yan, what are you doing? Get over here!”
Wang Feng-hai was a powerful figure at No. 1 High, on par with or even above the school bully because he was the only one who could actually discipline him.
Lin Yan clicked his tongue. Just a second ago, he had received a task from the System to memorize the final poem: Li Ping’s Konghou Song. He weighed the threat of Wang Feng-hai against the threat of a System electric shock. The former was a barking paper tiger; the latter was a very real, very painful sting. He feared the shock more.
The System began a countdown in his head. “Prepare to recite. Five-minute time limit. 5, 4, 3…”
Lin Yan stepped in front of Wang Feng-hai, placed a finger over his lips, and whispered, “Shh!”
He followed it up with a blunt statement: “Supervisor Wang, don’t speak yet. I need to recite something. I’m in a hurry!”
Before Wang Feng-hai could react, Lin Yan began muttering the ancient poem. “Li Ping’s Konghou Song, by Li He. Wu silk and Shu paulownia join in the high autumn. On the empty mountain, the condensed clouds stop their flow…”
The boy with the buzz cut and the rest of the students were speechless. The boss was truly the boss. He actually dared to “shh” Wang Feng-hai. Truly legendary.
Ning Youji watched the youth’s moving lips with deep, thoughtful eyes. The entire office fell silent, filled only with the sound of Lin Yan’s recitation.
That “shh” had made Wang Feng-hai’s blood boil. He lectured them for a long time. It wasn’t until the end of the fourth self-study period that he let them go. Every student had to write a 5,000-word reflection, while Lin Yan was assigned 8,000 words, to be posted on the bulletin board on Wednesday.
On the way back to the dorms, Lin Yan received his new schedule from the System. It looked like a death warrant.
“Father!” a crisp male voice called out from behind.
Lin Yan turned to see Buzz-cut running toward him. “Father, are you in this dorm building?”
Hearing the word “father” made Lin Yan’s eyebrows twitch. He suddenly felt the burden of parenthood. “Don’t call me father,” he laughed, unable to hold back. “Call me ‘Brother.’ Having a son like you would give me a heart attack.”
“Brother Yan,” Buzz-cut said sincerely, rubbing his head. “I’m sorry about today. I was too impulsive since I just got here. From now on, you’re my real brother.”
Lin Yan laughed and patted him on the head. He found the kid quite honest. As they walked toward the building, Lin Yan remembered something. “By the way, lend me your freshman math book later.”
“Sure, no problem.” Buzz-cut was confused. “But Brother Yan, why do you need a freshman book?”
Lin Yan thought about his studies, feeling both exhausted and motivated. “Your brother is starting from zero.”
Recalling the scene in the office, Buzz-cut said seriously, “Actually, I already self-studied all of the freshman math. Do you want to study together?”
Lin Yan was impressed. The System urged him in his mind: “Agree to it. That way, your rapid progress won’t seem so suspicious.”
“Sure,” Lin Yan replied. The two walked into the dorm building together. Nearby, Ning Youji’s eyes narrowed slightly.
The next morning, sunlight streamed through the window and fell onto Lin Yan’s soft hair. The scene was eerie. The students in the classroom exchanged glances; it was more terrifying than a horror movie.
Lin Yan was a legendary figure: a bully who had ranked last since his freshman year, who slept in class and turned in blank exam papers. Yet there he was, in the last row, burying his head in his books! The students barely dared to breathe. This was even scarier than seeing the bully smile.
Jiang Xue walked in, and a boy grabbed him at the door. “Jiang Xue, go check on Brother Yan. He’s actually studying! It scared the life out of me. Do you think he’s possessed?”
Jiang Xue frowned. “He’s doing what?”
“Studying,” the boy repeated.
Jiang Xue had sensed something was off yesterday, but it was only now that he truly processed it. He walked over with a terrified expression and touched Lin Yan’s forehead. “Brother, are you sick? Are you really… possessed?”
“Get lost,” Lin Yan snapped, rolling his eyes.
“Brother Yan!” Buzz-cut appeared at the classroom door with a math book. Lin Yan walked over, took the book, and flipped through it. A notebook was tucked inside.
“Brother Yan, these are some of my tips. See if they help,” Buzz-cut said with a sheepish grin.
“Thanks,” Lin Yan said. “I’ll treat you to lunch.”
“Excuse me, please move.” Ning Youji stood before them. Lin Yan and Buzz-cut were blocking the door like two guardian statues.
Lin Yan frowned and met Ning Youji’s gaze. He instinctively wanted to move, but his pride stopped him, so he stayed where he was. Buzz-cut, remembering the fear of being suppressed by pheromones the night before, wisely stepped aside. He didn’t want to be collateral damage in a clash of giants. “Brother Yan, I’ll head out first. Study hard!”
Ning Youji’s gaze swept over the notebook in Lin Yan’s hand. The light in his eyes dimmed for a moment. An Alpha’s personal item—it had a scent.
Back at his seat, Jiang Xue showed his phone to Lin Yan. “Brother Yan, look! You’re viral again!” The forum was full of discussions about how an Omega had taken down a group of Alphas, making his reputation even more imposing.
Lin Yan had no interest. He opened the notebook. “Go away. Don’t disturb my ambition.”
Next to him, Ning Youji’s hand paused as he held his pen. That sentence felt like it broke a spell that had kept him trapped at the bottom of a dark pool.
The idea of a delinquent studying was like the sun rising in the west. The class assumed he was just playing around and even started betting on how long he would last. Some bet three hours, some bet a night; the longest bet was one day.
A week passed. Lin Yan spent every morning in a freshman classroom, apparently attending lectures. Finding the commute troublesome, he went to the office to negotiate with Wang Feng-hai.
“I don’t want to keep running back and forth. I just want to sit in on their classes for a month. I promise I won’t cause trouble,” Lin Yan said, rare for him to speak so politely.
Wang Feng-hai was worn down by his persistence. Seeing how hard he had been working, he looked around at the freshman teachers. They all lowered their heads, clearly not wanting to deal with this “ancestor.”
Just as Wang Feng-hai was wondering how to deal with him, he saw Ning Youji enter the office. His eyes brightened. “Student Ning, here to turn in your homework?”
Ning Youji nodded.
“Student Ning, come here.” Wang Feng-hai’s smile widened like a wizard offering a poison apple. “What do you think of Lin Yan?”
Lin Yan: “…”
Ning Youji sized him up, his narrow eyes naturally curving upward in a way that felt like a superior looking down at a subordinate. Finally, he gave a faint “Mm.”
Lin Yan’s cold gaze challenged him. “What is that ‘Mm’ supposed to mean!” Ever since his differentiation, he had been at odds with Ning Youji, though it was mostly one-sided.
Wang Feng-hai interrupted, patting Lin Yan’s hand to soothe him before grabbing Ning Youji’s hand as well. “Student Ning, I’m entrusting our Student Lin to you. He is very eager to learn. Help him out as much as you can.”
“From today on, you two will be a private study group.”
Lin Yan opened his mouth to object, but Wang Feng-hai sensed it. He stood up, dropped a quick “Get along and study hard,” and bolted out of the office.
At the same time, the System chimed in: “This is even better. We can make rapid progress now without being discovered.”
The two returned to the classroom in silence. Lin Yan opened the notebook Buzz-cut had given him. Ning Youji reached out with his dark eyes calm, snatched the notebook, and tossed it into the trash can as if discarding a major nuisance he had been eyeing for a long time.
“What are you doing?” Lin Yan’s voice flared with anger, his aura becoming sharp. “I’ll give you one chance. Pick it up.”
Ning Youji’s voice was lazy and cool as he tossed his own black notebook onto Lin Yan’s desk. “Use this one.”
I’ll use whatever I want, Lin Yan thought. I’m definitely not using yours.
Seeing his hesitation, Ning Youji added, “It will make your work twice as effective.”
Lin Yan didn’t believe him, but he picked it up and flipped through it anyway. The System began frantically praising the notebook’s quality. After listening to the System, Lin Yan’s lips unconsciously curved upward.
A moment later, he raised his clear eyes and asked uncertainly, “You’re really giving this to me?”
Ning Youji gave a faint “Mm.”
“Then, thanks.” Lin Yan had completely forgotten about the notebook in the trash.
From the corner of his eye, Ning Youji saw Lin Yan’s fingers brush against his notebook. A trace of a smile flickered in his eyes. Everything the boy touched now carried his scent.
