- Chapter 3 - High Compatibility
Lin Yan’s entire body stiffened. Those words served as a stark reminder. In his past life, his pheromone was not a floral scent; it was a woody fragrance, the scent of a jacaranda tree.
As he carefully felt the changes in his body, he realized this differentiation was indeed vastly different from the one he remembered. Back then, he had felt irritable, aggressive, and brimming with strength. Now, he felt weak, dizzy, and heavy-headed. The area where his neck met his spine throbbed with a sharp pain, as if something were trying to sprout from within.
Lin Yan desperately tried to push these thoughts aside. He struggled to break free from Ning Youji’s arms, but the moment he pulled away, the skin on the back of his neck convulsed with pain. His face went pale, and he lost his balance, falling backward into a warm embrace.
When Lin Yan woke up again, he was already in the hospital. He looked around and saw no one, but he could hear footsteps approaching from outside. The door pushed open, and a beautiful woman entered alongside a doctor.
When the woman saw him awake, she let out a long sigh of relief and rushed to his side. “You’re finally awake! You scared your mother to death.” Seeing Lin Yan’s dazed expression, she turned to the doctor. “Doctor, please check if there will be any lasting side effects.”
Until today, Wen Jing had always believed her son was an Alpha. After all, he had such powerful pheromones.
The doctor replied, “His condition is stable, so there shouldn’t be major issues. However, this situation is quite rare. Differentiating in the second year of high school means his pheromones might be unstable. His previous physical exams likely misidentified him as an Alpha because his pheromones were so strong. Now that the gland has fully formed, it is certain: he is an Omega.”
The doctor was also puzzled. The previous records clearly stated he was an Alpha, yet the scent currently emanating from his gland was undeniably that of an Omega. It was strange; his pheromones were powerful before, but they seemed to have weakened significantly after differentiating into an Omega.
Before leaving, the doctor advised, “Keep a close eye on his condition and contact the hospital if anything happens.” The doctor paused at the door as if remembering something. “By the way, regarding the Alpha who brought you here: your pheromones might be highly compatible. You should try to spend more time with him. Since your gland is still unstable, he might be able to help alleviate your symptoms. It is perfectly fine for classmates to help each other out.”
Lin Yan: “…”
After the doctor left, Wen Jing showed the medical report to Lin Yan. “You are an Omega now, so you need to be careful at school. I’ll buy you plenty of blockers and suppressants later. Stop causing trouble every day.”
It was a simple statement, but Lin Yan sat in a daze for a full minute. Eventually, he spoke blankly. “Mom, do you think the hospital made a mistake? How could I be an Omega?”
This would be a hard pill for anyone to swallow. A perfectly good Alpha turning into an Omega was unheard of. Wen Jing sighed. “Son, it doesn’t matter if you are an Alpha or an Omega. What matters is that you are healthy.”
How could it not matter? Lin Yan thought. The legendary school bully is an Omega. People will laugh themselves to death.
He still hadn’t processed it by the time he got home. Then, the System emerged.
“Ding! Congratulations to the host on a successful differentiation. You are on track to become the wildest Omega. Congratulations on completing the task; you have earned the following points.”
[Focus: 3 (+3) | Memory: 3 (+2) | Observation: 6 (+3) | Reasoning: 8 (+3) | Imagination: 10 (+2)] [Study Methods: 0] [Total Intelligence: 47 (Deficient)] [Brain Development: 97% (Unused)]
Lin Yan’s expression softened slightly. Fine, the pheromones didn’t matter as much as his studies right now.
As he was thinking, the door pushed open and the voice of his younger sister, Lin Zhi, drifted in. “Brother, you’re back!”
Her voice was sweet and tiny, laced with sleepiness. Lin Zhi was six years old and looked quite a bit like her older brother. Wen Jing stood at the door, watching them. “Zhi-zhi heard you were back and insisted on getting out of bed to see you.”
Lin Yan pinched her cheek, enjoying the familiar feel of it. He smiled. “You little clingy spirit.” Although he was a tyrant outside, he was a very responsible brother at home.
Lin Zhi nuzzled against him. “I missed you, Brother.”
Lin Yan felt a wave of melancholy. He lifted her onto the bed and tucked her in. “How about you sleep with me tonight?”
“Okay!” she chirped, looking delighted.
At the doorway, Wen Jing hesitated. “Your body…”
Lin Yan waved her off. “I’m fine, Mom. Go get some sleep.”
“Call me if you need anything,” Wen Jing replied before closing the door.
The little girl in his arms was already fast asleep. Lin Yan looked at her familiar face, and memories of his past life flooded his heart, causing a sharp pang of pain. He tucked the blanket around her and lay down.
An Omega in the differentiation stage is extremely sensitive to scents. Lin Yan felt as though the Alpha’s sandalwood fragrance still lingered on him. He didn’t hate the smell; in fact, he felt a strange sense of attachment to it. That was exactly what scared him. He knew what it meant for an Omega to crave an Alpha’s scent.
The compatibility between every Alpha and Omega is different. If an Omega becomes dependent on an Alpha’s scent—or if that scent triggers their differentiation—it can only mean one thing: their compatibility is exceptionally high.
On Sunday afternoon, Lin Yan returned to school. Most students lived in the dorms. As he walked through the campus, students instinctively moved aside to give him space. Lin Yan arched an eyebrow. Although he was always the center of attention, the way people looked at him today was different. He couldn’t quite put his finger on why.
Jiang Xue spotted him from a distance and ran over with a few followers. As he got closer, Jiang Xue sniffed the air. A faint, sweet pheromone drifted into his nose. Even though the scent was light, an Alpha who had been differentiated for years could recognize it instantly.
He yelled out in disbelief, “Brother Yan, did you really turn into an Omega?!”
Lin Yan glared at him. Sensing the killing intent, Jiang Xue quickly tried to flatter him. “Brother Yan, even as an Omega, you are the most badass Omega. You’re still the boss!”
The followers behind him chimed in immediately. “Right, right! The boss is still the boss. No one can touch you!” “Gender isn’t an issue. Brother Yan is still Brother Yan, the strongest school bully!”
Lin Yan realized something. “How do you know I differentiated into an Omega?”
“You didn’t know?” Jiang Xue pulled out his phone and opened the school forum. “Look, I’m afraid the whole school knows by now.”
Lin Yan took the phone and saw the top trending post: [The School Bully gets a Princess Carry from the School Heartthrob; God Ning catalyzes the Bully into an Omega! Shocking!]
He clicked on the post and saw a video of Ning Youji carrying him out of school on Friday after he had fainted. In the video, Ning Youji was running while keeping a close watch on the person in his arms. His expression was indifferent, yet he looked strangely worried. The video was short, only about ten seconds.
Lin Yan vaguely remembered that after he had fainted, he felt like he was in a place that was warm and incredibly comfortable. Was he being held by Ning Youji the whole time?
The comments were wild.
1L: “Is my Brother Ning that powerful? New skill unlocked: Catalyzing Differentiation!”
5L: “My god, I can’t look at this. Seeing the school bully get a princess carry has stained my eyes.”
10L: “You guys weren’t there. I smelled the heartthrob’s pheromones for the first time, and they were amazing. I’m in love!”
12L: “Am I the only one who noticed the bully’s pheromones? He’s so fierce, but his scent is so sweet. It’s so seductive; I want it for myself!”
Lin Yan paused at the classroom door. The memory of his foolish behavior on Friday rushed back, making his body feel warm. He suddenly smelled a faint hint of sandalwood, which made the heat intensify.
Behind him, Jiang Xue noticed something was wrong. “Brother Yan, your pheromones are leaking!”
An Omega’s pheromones are unstable right after differentiation, and with the first heat cycle approaching, one cannot afford to be careless.
“I’m going to the restroom,” Lin Yan said, turning on his heel.
A faint scent of magnolia lingered in the hallway. Lin Yan rushed into the restroom, pulled a blocker from his bag, and sprayed himself frantically. The blocker was scented like his old pheromones: jacaranda. He sniffed his clothes for a long time to make sure the scent was gone before stepping out.
As soon as he exited, he saw Ning Youji leaning against the sinks. Lin Yan’s eyelashes fluttered. He tried to act as if he hadn’t seen him and hurried past.
“Lin Yan,” Ning Youji called out.
Lin Yan stopped. Suddenly, a wave of Alpha pheromones swept over him from behind. In an instant, Lin Yan’s mind went blank. For a newly differentiated Omega entering their heat cycle, this scent was like a drug. Coupled with the high compatibility, it was impossible to resist.
The prickly Lin Yan instantly felt relaxed, like a puppy being petted by its owner, slowly becoming submissive. Ning Youji took two steps closer, his voice carrying a slight, raspy texture. “If I’m not mistaken, your pheromones are a perfect match for mine.”
A flush crept across Lin Yan’s handsome face, and his beautiful eyes were filled with panic. He bit his lip and narrowed his eyes, quickly pulling away to create distance. “Try coming any closer,” he warned. “Even if I’m an Omega, I’m not afraid of anyone.” He paused, his tone becoming even more cold and authoritative. “So what if they are compatible?”
Ning Youji remained calm, his tone sounding almost negotiable. “Don’t misunderstand. I just wanted to say that you can come to me during your heat cycle to avoid unnecessary trouble.”
“No thanks.”
Without a second glance, Lin Yan dropped those two words and walked away without looking back. He didn’t stop until he reached the corner, where he took a deep breath. He finally understood what it felt like for an Omega to submit to an Alpha; it was terrifying. Fortunately, his physical constitution was strong enough to maintain his dignity as the school bully.
The System appeared. “Don’t be afraid. As your heat cycles progress, your scent will become increasingly wild. You will become the first top-tier Omega.”
Top-tier. Lin Yan liked the sound of that.
System: “Today’s learning task: complete the basic physics worksheet. Difficulty: two stars. Think deeply and observe carefully. I will explain the problems to you once you are finished.”
The System was not just a system; it was also a teacher.
As Ning Youji watched the youth flee, he stood in place for a moment. He licked the roof of his mouth, a smile creeping into his eyes. A sweet taste lingered in his mouth. Some things, once tasted, become an addiction.
