- Chapter 2 - Differentiation
Lin Yan raised an eyebrow, feeling a bit puzzled. “Why do I have to provoke Ning Youji?”
The System explained, “Because his willpower and composure are far beyond those of an ordinary person. If you can force him to release his pheromones, your reasoning and focus will be significantly stimulated during the process.”
The explanation was logical and highly persuasive. Lin Yan bit the tip of his tongue. It seemed he would have to sacrifice his “debtor” for the cause.
“Fine.”
As a fellow Alpha, Lin Yan knew that if he released his own pheromones to suppress another, the other person would surely retaliate. However, the problem was that Lin Yan could no longer release his pheromones.
“Damn it, what is going on?” Lin Yan tried multiple times, but not a single trace of a pheromone emerged.
The System offered a friendly reminder, “Do not waste your energy. You have not differentiated yet.”
Lin Yan sounded confused. “How is that possible? In my past life, I differentiated during the summer break of eighth grade.”
“It might be due to the rebirth,” the System replied. “But there is no need to worry. I just scanned your body, and your differentiation should occur within the next few days.”
Lin Yan stopped overthinking it. Fortunately, his persona was that of a school bully; provoking someone was a simple task for him.
Lin Yan kicked open the classroom door and walked in with an arrogant stride. His light brown eyes carried a mix of roguish charm and the authority of a school bully. Ning Youji turned his head, and their eyes met.
In his previous life, Lin Yan had never looked closely at Ning Youji. He realized now that the boy was incredibly handsome, possessing the kind of looks that felt naturally comfortable to behold. No wonder he was the school heartthrob.
The classroom began to buzz with excitement.
“Ah, the school bully is back with his usual aura!” “The long-awaited battle of the century! Quick, someone go notify the homeroom teacher!”
Amidst the gossip, Lin Yan sauntered back to his seat with extreme arrogance. Without saying a word, he delivered a sharp kick to the desk in front of him. A loud bang echoed through the room, and everyone fell silent.
The arrogant bully crossed his arms and tilted his chin toward Ning Youji. “What are you looking at?” he asked in a bold, provocative tone.
The atmosphere in the classroom turned subtle. Ning Youji withdrew his gaze and looked down, choosing to ignore him. Seeing this, Lin Yan felt as though his punch had landed on a bale of cotton.
Since verbal provocation failed, Lin Yan tried a different tactic. He leaned over his desk, stretching out his long arm with a challenging look in his eyes, as if shouting, Come and fight me.
Ning Youji glanced over sideways. The youth leaning on the desk had exceptionally beautiful eyes. Despite his overbearing manner, he was strangely not repulsive.
Ning Youji lightly tapped Lin Yan’s wrist. “Being this bossy is not good,” he said softly.
Lin Yan felt stifled by the comment, which sounded like a teacher scolding a child. He frowned, his tone remaining unfriendly. “I have always been this bossy. If you don’t like it, let’s settle this one-on-one.”
Lin Yan’s face turned cold, carrying the true weight of a school bully’s threat. Ning Youji glanced at him lazily as if he had heard nothing. He packed his study materials and began reading a book with one hand, completely unaffected.
Jiang Xue, who had been observing from the front, was laughing so hard internally that he felt he might suffer internal bleeding. He didn’t dare make a sound. It was the first time he had seen Lin Yan fail so spectacularly. It was refreshing to see someone who could actually handle the school bully of No. 1 High.
Lin Yan complained to the System, “Does he even have a temper? How can a man endure so much?”
The System wanted to tell him that his technique was simply too amateur.
While Lin Yan was brooding over how to anger Ning Youji, a boy in the classroom suddenly shouted, “Hey, God Ning! The school beauty is looking for you!”
The class erupted in hoots and cheers. There were already threads on the school forum discussing the gossip between the school heartthrob and the school beauty. Rumor had it they were currently in an ambiguous phase.
Lin Yan’s eyes brightened. This was his chance to provoke Ning Youji. As soon as Ning Youji left the room, Lin Yan followed closely behind.
The boy who had called out to Ning Youji widened his eyes. “Hey, did you see that? The school bully just smiled again!”
As soon as he said it, the classroom filled with whispered discussions. “I saw it too! It felt like he was smiling at the school heartthrob’s back.” “Good lord, the school bully couldn’t possibly have a crush on him, right?” “Have you noticed that he actually looks quite good when he smiles? He has a dimple on one cheek. He’s that classic ‘bad boy’ handsome.”
Lin Yan followed the pair all the way to the rooftop. The school beauty held a pink envelope and handed it to Ning Youji. Her eyes were downcast, and her long, thick eyelashes trembled slightly; she was clearly shy.
“Ning Youji, I… I like you. I know you only want to focus on your studies right now, but I can wait for you.”
Ning Youji remained motionless. He didn’t even lift his eyelids, though his palm felt a strange itch, causing him to flex his hand. In Lin Yan’s eyes, this movement was a signal, a prelude to acceptance.
He strode forward, snatched the envelope, and adopted the tone of a common thug. “Wow, how romantic. A rooftop confession.”
Lin Yan sneered, making his tone even worse. “Sorry, Heartthrob, but I’ve got my eyes on this girl too. How about it? Do you want to have a fair competition between men?”
He figured that if the man didn’t get angry after such a provocation, it would be unscientific.
Ning Youji asked indifferently, “You like her?”
Lin Yan finally sensed a hint of aggression in the other man’s voice. His lips curled up unconsciously as he naturally pulled the school beauty into his arms. “What? You can like her, but I can’t?”
Let the storm rage harder, he thought.
Ning Youji raised his eyes to meet Lin Yan’s and arched an eyebrow. Lin Yan interpreted this as a silent threat. Perfect, he’s taking the bait.
But in the next second, Ning Youji spoke. “Then I won’t disturb the two of you. I still have problems to solve.”
He spoke candidly, as if he didn’t care at all. His tone even carried a hint of relief at having escaped a troublesome situation. Lin Yan blinked as he watched Ning Youji’s back disappear around the corner.
The school beauty in his arms was crying uncontrollably, clearly terrified. Lin Yan immediately let go and spoke in a stiff, cold voice. “Stop crying.”
Frightened, she stopped immediately, though she continued to sob while glancing at him. Lin Yan looked at her, feeling a bit at a loss. He glanced at the door, clicked his tongue in annoyance, and walked away.
Lin Yan caught up to Ning Youji and challenged him. “Are you just incompetent? A school beauty as pretty as that is chasing you, and you are completely unmoved?”
He felt like a child who had found an answer to a difficult problem only to be told the answer was wrong.
Ning Youji stopped in his tracks. Lin Yan bumped straight into his back. Just as he was about to voice a threat, he met the boy’s dark eyes. Ning Youji took a step forward, his lips curling into a shallow smile. “Whether I am incompetent or not… would you like to find out for yourself?”
Lin Yan: “…”
When they returned to the classroom, every pair of eyes was fixed on them. A new thread had appeared on the school forum: [The Genius vs. The Bully: Who will win the heart of the school beauty?]
1L: “My money is on the bully. He is so dominant; there is nothing he can’t get!”
2L: “I’m betting on God Ning. Looks, grades, everything is top-tier. He won’t lose!”
3L: “Can I ship the Genius and the Bully together? Who needs the girl when you have two Kings?”
When Jiang Xue saw his leader return, he hurried over to ask, “Brother Yan, how did it go? Did you get the girl?”
Lin Yan looked at him as if he were an idiot. “The flower withered.”
Hearing his answer, Ning Youji could not help but smile. One person had a face as bitter as a gourd, while the other was beaming. Jiang Xue understood; his brother had failed to steal the girl.
Once the excitement died down, Ning Youji turned his head to look at Lin Yan. Lin Yan had his back to him, exposing his pale neck. Just below was the area where an Omega’s gland would be; it was smooth and empty.
Ning Youji’s teeth felt strangely itchy. He slid his tongue across the roof of his mouth to suppress this abnormal sensation.
Lin Yan suddenly turned around, and their eyes met. “Why are you staring at me?” Lin Yan asked. His mind was so full of ways to provoke Ning Youji that his tone was naturally hostile.
Ning Youji realized that the boy’s aggressive aura didn’t match his appearance at all. The youth didn’t look fierce; he had a dimple on his left cheek that was visible even when he wasn’t smiling. It was only his teenage temper and his attempt at a menacing expression that created the illusion of hostility.
“Has anyone ever told you,” Ning Youji said with a slight smile, “that you are actually quite cute when you smile?”
Lin Yan froze. He had been provoking this person all day, and the response he got was that he was… cute? His mouth twitched. Being teased like this was something no man could tolerate. “You’re pretty cute yourself,” he retorted.
He reached out and pinched Ning Youji’s face. “The texture is nice, too.”
It really was nice, surprisingly smooth.
A hint of amusement flashed in Ning Youji’s eyes. “Do you really want me to get angry?”
Lin Yan’s hand froze in mid-air. The boy who had just been acting like a thug was now silenced. He turned his head away guiltily. “You’re crazy. Why would I want you to be angry? Have you studied yourself into an idiot? This is just my daily behavior as a school bully.”
Lin Yan leaned onto the desk, turning his back to him. “Don’t disturb my sleep, or I’ll mess you up!”
As he lay there, his entire neck was exposed. Ning Youji’s gaze fell on that pale skin again, and his eyes narrowed.
Despite Ning Youji’s suspicion, Lin Yan decided to persist. For an entire week, Lin Yan racked his brain to provoke Ning Youji, but it always ended with Lin Yan fuming while the other remained calm, never even fluttering an eyebrow.
Seeing that Lin Yan was at his wits’ end, the System offered a tip. “If the direct path is blocked, take a side road. It is not impossible to draw out his pheromones indirectly.”
Pheromones? Lin Yan felt like he had just woken from a dream. Right, how could he have forgotten basic male instincts?
On Friday after school, Lin Yan called out to Ning Youji. Only the two of them remained in the classroom. Lin Yan looked at him with a lopsided, roguish smile. “I guessed wrong last time. I don’t want to make you angry. I just…”
Before he finished, he walked over and hooked his finger under Ning Youji’s chin. He arched an eyebrow, and the dimple on his left cheek appeared like a charm that made it impossible to look away.
Ning Youji’s voice was husky as he chuckled. “You just what?”
Lin Yan continued to push the boundaries of what Ning Youji would tolerate. Alphas were notoriously territorial; they never allowed anyone to touch their things, let alone their person, without permission. Lin Yan touched him sporadically and leaned close to his ear. “I just want to know what your pheromones smell like.”
His warm breath brushed against Ning Youji’s neck and ear. Ning Youji’s dark, calm eyes became thoughtful.
Lin Yan clicked his tongue, thinking that this man truly had incredible patience. He decided he had to sacrifice himself for the greater good. Lin Yan suddenly took a step forward, closing the distance between them. He narrowed his eyes and flashed a provocative smile.
“Do you dare to compete with me? Let’s see whose pheromones can suppress the other’s.”
Ning Youji smiled thinly. “Since you want this so much, I will grant your wish.”
Alpha pheromones rapidly flooded the surroundings, even leaking out of the classroom. Lin Yan was stunned by the sudden explosion of power and found himself unable to move for a moment.
The Alpha pheromones carried a refreshing scent of sandalwood. Lin Yan’s head began to swim, and his limbs grew weak. Something inside his body was being drawn out. His pale skin took on a pinkish hue as the scent of sandalwood filled the air. He inhaled it into his lungs, and it surged through his body, making him feel hot.
A floral fragrance began to waft from the back of his neck, attempting to merge with the sandalwood in the air. Soon, the two scents clashed, testing and embracing one another.
When Ning Youji caught the scent, his teeth ground together involuntarily. It was sweet and fragrant, something impossible to resist. His instincts told him that the person in front of him was an Omega about to differentiate. This was the first time an Omega’s pheromones had ever harmonized with his own.
The classroom was filled with a scent so thick it made one’s head spin. Lin Yan’s back spasmed, and a numbing sensation traveled from his tailbone to his legs. He couldn’t withstand the sandalwood; his body instinctively screamed to submit.
Seeing him stumble, Ning Youji wrapped an arm around Lin Yan’s waist to keep him from collapsing. He lowered his head and whispered, “You haven’t differentiated yet?”
Lin Yan was supposed to differentiate in the next few days, but he hadn’t expected Ning Youji to catalyze the process today. As the scent intensified, Ning Youji narrowed his sharp phoenix eyes. “You are an Omega?”
It was a question, but his tone was certain. Lin Yan pushed him away weakly, his gaze beginning to lose focus.
“You are the damn Omega! I am a top-tier Alpha!”
“Is that so?” Ning Youji took two steps forward, pulled Lin Yan back by the waist, and leaned down to sniff him. “But don’t you know? This pheromone you are releasing is seducing me.”
