Chapter 6: You Weren’t This Shy When You Were Little
Wen Yingyi asked, “Is it a sprained ankle, or did you twist your waist again?”
“My ankle feels a bit sprained, my waist hurts, and—” He Chen huffed, holding up both hands indignantly, “my hands are covered in mosquito bites. Senior Sister, look, here, here, and on my face and neck.”
He Chen felt a bit guilty; Wen Yingyi had caught her just in time with gentle movements that hadn’t actually aggravated the old waist injury. However, she truly was riddled with mosquito bites. If she didn’t play up her misery, there was no guarantee Wen Yingyi wouldn’t send her back.
The corners of Wen Yingyi’s mouth curved slightly. She said softly, “It’s late; how can I see clearly? Hurry inside.”
“Oh, right.” He Chen scratched her head and allowed Wen Yingyi to support her into the room.
“Sit for a moment while I fetch the Hundred-Herb Ointment.” Wen Yingyi settled He Chen in a chair, lit the oil lamp, and walked toward the cabinet.
By the time she returned with the medicine, He Chen was itching uncontrollably. Her arms and neck were already covered in red streaks from scratching. The sticky feeling on her body grew more obvious, and her general discomfort made her think only of bathing.
However, she still had two things on her mind. While scratching, she opened the lid of the oil jar and pushed it forward. “The temperature is just right; you can drink it now. It was dark outside, and I was afraid a bowl would spill easily. Wasn’t that thoughtful of me?”
“No rush. Let’s apply the medicine first.” Wen Yingyi’s brow furrowed slightly. She pushed the oil jar aside and sat down next to He Chen.
“I was afraid it wouldn’t be sweet enough, so I added quite a bit of brown sugar while brewing. It shouldn’t be hard to swallow.”
“Mhm. Roll up your sleeves.”
He Chen obeyed, rolling up both sleeves. She asked with feigned nonchalance, “Senior Sister, your movements just now were so agile. I’ve never seen that before. Where did you learn it?”
Wen Yingyi froze for a second. She hadn’t expected He Chen to ask this and replied dismissively, “Just some fitness exercises I learned from Master. If you want to learn, I’ll see if I can find the book.”
He Chen shook her head, saying urgently, “I don’t want to learn; I was just curious.”
Hearing this answer, the doubts in He Chen’s heart deepened. What kind of “fitness exercise” could have such power? Apricot Forest Hall was a sect of medicine, not a place of martial arts.
“Senior Sister—” He Chen fidgeted, saying bashfully, “I want to bathe.”
“Hmm?” Wen Yingyi looked up from applying the ointment, looking puzzled. “Did you not bathe at Third Senior Sister’s place?”
He Chen remained silent, only shaking her head gently.
“Why?” Wen Yingyi stopped her movements, placed the ointment on the table, and picked up a handkerchief to wipe her hands. Seeing He Chen’s silence, she asked again, “You were unwilling?”
“Not exactly. It’s just… I didn’t feel this uncomfortable earlier.” He Chen hurriedly denied it, explaining, “I was reheating the ginger tea in the kitchen, and walking all the way here made me drenched in sweat. My skin feels sticky…”
After saying this, she tilted her head to her shoulder, took a sniff, wrinkled her nose, and said with disgust, “I don’t smell sweet at all…”
Wen Yingyi stood up helplessly to head outside. He Chen quickly grabbed her sleeve, pointing at the oil jar on the table to remind her, “Senior Sister, the ginger tea.”
“I’m going to boil some hot water.” Wen Yingyi glanced at the jar, her brow tightening.
“Boiling water can wait a moment. Senior Sister, drink the ginger tea first to soothe your body.”
“…” Wen Yingyi looked at the jar and sighed. she picked it up, her lips pressed tight in hesitation. After a moment of stalling, she took two sips and put it back down.
He Chen took the jar, peered inside, and said, “There’s still more.”
Wen Yingyi’s expression grew strained, but she maintained her composure. “You brewed too much; I can’t finish it all at once. I’ll drink more later while the water is boiling.”
The jar was usually used for oil, and perhaps it hadn’t been cleaned thoroughly; the strong smell of grease hit her nose directly. Since taking the “Bone-Eroding Pill,” her senses had become increasingly sharp, making such smells twice as difficult to bear.
Wen Yingyi had disliked ginger since she was a child, but not wanting He Chen to realize her period hadn’t actually come, she forced herself to swallow it to make her believe the lie.
Seeing Wen Yingyi drink the tea, even if only a little, He Chen felt happy that her hard work hadn’t gone to waste. She then let her go to prepare the water.
Once Wen Yingyi had everything ready, He Chen hesitated.
“Can you wash yourself?” Wen Yingyi asked.
“Huh?” He Chen was deep in a dilemma about whether to ask for help. Startled, she nodded. “Yes, I can.”
“Mhm. Wear my clothes for now. I’ll be right outside. If you need anything, just call me.”
“Okay.” He Chen breathed a sigh of relief.
Although she had secretly thought that if it were inconvenient, she wouldn’t mind Wen Yingyi helping her, now that the moment was here, she felt quite bashful. Just thinking about the scene made her face heat up. Fortunately, Wen Yingyi didn’t do as she had imagined and only gave a few simple instructions.
Once she entered the washing area, things became difficult. Just taking off her clothes took a long time. Looking at the bath barrel, she fell into another dilemma. She was sticky all over and naturally wanted to soak properly, but the dull pain in her waist made her hesitate.
Left with no choice, she compromised. She dipped a washcloth in water to wipe herself. Bending over to wet it and then wringing it dry—after repeating this several times, He Chen grew tired. It wasn’t a satisfying wash, and the floor around the barrel became spotted with water.
Wiping was never as refreshing as soaking. Thinking about how she would be sharing a bed with Wen Yingyi tonight—and knowing how much Wen Yingyi valued cleanliness—He Chen figured a simple wipe wouldn’t be enough. She gritted her teeth and prepared to step into the barrel. She gripped the edge tightly and slowly lifted her foot.
However, before her foot could enter the barrel, her other foot slipped on the wet floor. She twisted her waist again. Her body lost its strength, and relying entirely on her uninjured hand for support, she began to tilt backward.
“Senior Sister—help me!”
He Chen called for help urgently, her face and neck turning bright red. She wanted to cry but had no tears. How was it that the more she wanted to avoid something, the more it happened? Realizing she wasn’t wearing a single stitch of clothing, she felt a mix of shame and anger, almost regretting calling for help.
“What happened?” Wen Yingyi rushed over at the sound, asking through the curtain, “Do you need help?”
“Mhm. Senior Sister, come in quickly, I’m going to fall.” He Chen said urgently, overwhelmed with shame, “And… close your eyes first. I… I’m not wearing clothes.”
“Alright.” Wen Yingyi closed her eyes, using her ears to gauge the surroundings. She walked slowly to He Chen’s side and reached out. Before she could speak, He Chen shouted, “Okay, stop! Stop! Stop!”
He Chen stared at the hand that was just inches away from her chest. She was in a total panic. Luckily, Wen Yingyi stopped immediately, and He Chen breathed a sigh of relief, grabbing Wen Yingyi’s hand.
“Senior Sister, come a bit closer.” He Chen tugged at the edge of Wen Yingyi’s robe. Once she was a step closer, He Chen endured the pain to brace herself against Wen Yingyi’s shoulder and slid into the bath barrel. She held her injured arm high, leaving only the top half of her face above the water.
“Okay, Senior Sister can go out now. I’ll call you when I’m done.”
Seeing her so bashful, Wen Yingyi chuckled inwardly. When He Chen was little, hadn’t she been the one to wash her? She said cryptically, “You weren’t this shy when you were little.”
When I was little, when I was little—I’ve heard that several times today!
He Chen huffed back, “In a few more days, it will be my coming-of-age ceremony! I’ll be fifteen! An adult!”
“But you went to catch wild rabbits today; you seemed to have forgotten about the ceremony then.” Wen Yingyi shook her head with a smile and left the room.
He Chen froze. “…”
After washing, He Chen was too embarrassed to let Wen Yingyi in to help her dress. She struggled on her own for a long time. Wen Yingyi, waiting outside, could clearly hear her sighing and groaning. Seeing that it was getting very late, she finally spoke up.
“Finished?”
“Yes.”
“It’s very late; the roosters are about to crow.” Wen Yingyi stood up and walked toward the washing area. “I’m coming in to help you.”
“Mhm, come in.” He Chen pulled her hair back. Suddenly, she felt a dull ache in her lower abdomen and a warm flow between her legs. She looked down in confusion and immediately cried out to stop her: “W-wait! Senior Sister, you absolutely cannot come over!”
