Chapter 3: Her Face Flushed Instantly
“Because… because…” He Chen was at a loss for words.
The desire to have Wen Yingyi look after her grew stronger, yet when the explanation reached her lips, she couldn’t voice a single word. Indeed, why not? She was completely stumped by the question.
She didn’t want anyone else getting close to take care of her, to wash her or apply her medicine—she was only willing to let Wen Yingyi do it. Was that a reason she could actually say? How could she make anyone believe it? Thinking of this, He Chen felt her behavior today was exceptionally abnormal. She couldn’t help but wonder if it was caused by her injuries. But the injuries were to her arm and waist, not her head…
He Chen lightly rubbed her waist and looked down at her arm. On her arm was the exquisite knot Wen Yingyi had tied for her; for a moment, her mind drifted.
Her thoughts suddenly flew back to an injury in her childhood. Back then, she had clung to Wen Yingyi’s back, her eyes brimming with tears, her index finger swollen and red from a bee sting. She had mumbled incoherently: “It’s bleeding, Senior Sister look, it’s bleeding, it hurts—”
Hearing those words, Wen Yingyi’s originally stern face couldn’t help but break into a smile, her eyes full of indulgence. “We’ll go back and apply some ointment, then I’ll tie a beautiful knot for you, alright?”
He Chen’s eyes dimmed. She lifted her head slightly, averting her gaze from the crowd. In a place where others couldn’t see, she revealed a look of disappointment. It turned out Wen Yingyi still viewed her as a child.
But two years ago, Wen Yingyi clearly said she was growing older and could take care of herself. Back then, Wen Yingyi’s attitude had been firm, a memory that remained vivid to this day.
He Chen found it hard to explain what she was thinking, nor did she want Wen Yingyi to think she hadn’t improved at all over the past two years. Thinking of her upcoming coming-of-age ceremony, she felt she must act more like an adult!
Just as He Chen was lost in thought, Wen Yingyi suddenly spoke.
“I must trouble Second Senior Sister to help her to Third Senior Sister’s place to rest.” Before her words even landed, Wen Yingyi hurried to turn around. Gritting her teeth, she instructed: “When you leave—don’t forget to close the door.”
At this, He Chen completely gave up the idea of staying. Although her heart was filled with reluctance, she only called out blankly: “Eldest Senior Sister—”
After speaking, she noticed something strange, her mind replaying the image of Wen Yingyi turning around. Wen Yingyi’s pale face had flushed red in an instant, and one could even vaguely see the slight protrusion of veins on her forehead.
“Listen to Third Senior Sister. Once I am finished with my work, I will visit you in a couple of days.” Wen Yingyi, mistakenly thinking He Chen still wanted to stay, softened her tone. Enduring her discomfort, she steadied her voice and offered a soft consolation.
“Little Junior Sister, let’s go back.” Xiang Qingqing heard the dismissal in Wen Yingyi’s tone and dared not linger. She immediately bent down, signaling for He Chen to get on her back.
Seeing this, Yunli and Chaoling hurried forward to support He Chen, reminding her: “Fourth Senior Sister, be careful of your wounds.”
He Chen’s eyes showed concern, her gaze fixed directly on Wen Yingyi as she allowed Yunli and Chaoling to help her onto Xiang Qingqing’s back. She noticed Wen Yingyi’s earlobes were flushed and her shoulders were trembling slightly; she also saw her hands clenched tightly into fists, staring at the ground with her head bowed.
Following Wen Yingyi’s gaze, she saw a few faint, spreading water spots on the floor.
At first, she thought they were droplets of water from cleaning her wounds, but on second thought, she quickly dismissed the idea. The wooden basin was placed by the bed, far from where Wen Yingyi was standing; it clearly wasn’t that.
Just then, a drop of sweat quietly fell from the air. Sensing the gaze behind her, Wen Yingyi hurriedly stepped forward to cover it, then urged: “If there is nothing else, leave on your own.”
The hurried attitude to see them out, combined with the act of hiding the sweat, completely confirmed the suspicions in He Chen’s heart.
Wen Yingyi’s previous behaviors seemed intentionally secretive; even being sensitive about sweat on the floor suggested a hidden story. He Chen couldn’t help but recall that after waiting outside for a long time, Wen Yingyi had taken forever to open the door. Thinking of the inappropriate winter quilt on the bed, her heart grew anxious.
She knew Wen Yingyi had been cold-bodied since childhood, but it was currently the height of summer—how could she need a winter quilt? The only explanation that made sense was that Wen Yingyi was unwell and didn’t want them to know.
Could it be… she was having her period?
It must be!
He Chen had not yet experienced her first period, but she had seen Wen Yingyi’s suffering several times when she had hers. The symptoms today were quite similar. She couldn’t help but ask softly: “Eldest Senior Sister, are you feeling unwell?”
Hearing this, Wen Yingyi’s body stiffened slightly.
When did Little Junior Sister become so sharp?
Before she could open her mouth to deny it, she heard He Chen say: “If Eldest Senior Sister has things she can’t step away from, we can share the burden. Also, you… you should drink more ginger tea and avoid using cold water these days.”
Wen Yingyi smiled slightly. Going along with He Chen’s assumption, she replied: “It’s fine, I’ll brew some later. I need to prepare for your coming-of-age ceremony and the monthly exam matters recently. If anything happens, you can find the other two Senior Sisters; just don’t come to my place.”
As she spoke, the speed of the warm current rushing through her body slowed down, and she breathed a sigh of relief. Realizing He Chen had noticed her abnormality, she felt lucky that she had only mistaken her discomfort for her period.
Seeing Wen Yingyi say this, He Chen also felt relieved. “Understood, I won’t disturb Eldest Senior Sister then—”
Once everyone had left, Wen Yingyi immediately locked the door and checked her own pulse.
Her pulse was chaotic and her heart was drumming, faster than usual. Although the heat wasn’t as intense as before, she could still feel it gathered in her lower abdomen when she concentrated, circulating weakly. Her cheeks felt like they were burning, and her body temperature was higher than normal.
But these symptoms were not what worried her most. What filled her with dread was that for a moment, her body felt like a runaway horse, difficult to control. Her legs felt weak, and every inch of her skin became exceptionally sensitive. Her whole body was burning with heat, moisture flooded between her legs, and it felt as if a thousand ants were biting her skin.
The speed at which the medicine took effect instantly overwhelmed the icy cold brought by the gu-poison. Compared to the heart-piercing pain of the gu, the strange experience brought by the medicine was even harder to endure. Previously, when she took the Mind-Settling Pill, these symptoms had never appeared.
Could this be a symptom of the “Ten Thousand Wonders Bone-Eroding Pill”? No wonder the Master had repeatedly warned her when handing over the medicine. Recalling everything that just happened, Wen Yingyi shook her head; she must never take this medicine again in the future.
In another inner disciple’s residence, a hearty laugh rang out.
“Hahahaha…” Bu Lanfang clutched her stomach laughing. She had learned from Yunli that He Chen had hit a wall at Wen Yingyi’s place and was sent to her for recovery.
“Little Junior Sister, why bother? I told you earlier to come to my place, but you refused. Now do you understand? That Eldest Senior Sister is cold as frost and lacks any human touch.”
Bu Lanfang was fiery in nature and blunt in speech. Her words made Xiang Qingqing panic; she glanced outside and said cautiously: “Third Senior Sister, speak less. Little Junior Sister is already upset enough.”
“Strange, why are you all so afraid of Eldest Senior Sister? Her personality is cold, but she doesn’t eat people.” Bu Lanfang didn’t care. In her eyes, Wen Yingyi’s accomplishments were above theirs, and whenever she asked for guidance, Wen Yingyi always answered every question. She wasn’t a scary person.
Seeing someone who shared her thoughts, He Chen added: “Exactly, Eldest Senior Sister isn’t scary at all. She treats people very well. It’s just… she’s been feeling unwell lately, so she couldn’t look after me.”
“Eh?” Xiang Qingqing, Yunli, and Chaoling—the three of them stared blankly, their mouths slightly agape.
How did she know Eldest Senior Sister was unwell? If she truly treated her well, why would she delay opening the door and then send her away?
“If you don’t believe me, then forget it.” He Chen huffed coldly and said aggrievedly: “Second Senior Sister, you are the very best. Could you brew some ginger tea for me?”
Xiang Qingqing scratched her head. “Drinking ginger tea in this season… won’t it be too heating?”
However, Bu Lanfang heard a different meaning in those words. “Wait, when did Little Junior Sister become a woman?”
She didn’t think much of it. Considering He Chen’s coming-of-age ceremony was in a few days, the age was about right. She mistakenly thought He Chen’s first period had arrived. She looked her up and down; indeed, she was growing more and more delicately beautiful.
