Chapter 13: How Could a Mosquito Leave Such a Huge Mark?
Suspicion grew in He Chen’s heart. How could a mosquito leave such a large mark? She stepped forward to get a closer look, reaching out to brush aside the strands of hair to investigate.
Before she could see clearly, Wen Yingyi hurriedly covered her neck and stepped back to avoid her. Losing her balance, He Chen ended up pressing herself right against Wen Yingyi.
Wen Yingyi’s expression turned panicked. She reached out to push He Chen away, but remembering the girl’s injuries, she forced herself to withdraw her hands. Her face turned as cold as frost as she said, “Get up this instant.”
Hearing this, He Chen looked down at their current posture and hurriedly scrambled away from Wen Yingyi.
Although she had only caught a glimpse, the mark was clearly not the work of a mosquito. Furthermore, she had spotted faint indentations that looked like teeth. He Chen’s thoughts were in a whirlwind; the more she thought about it, the more suspicious things seemed.
Could it be—is this also my handiwork? No way…
She was suddenly filled with both shame and annoyance, her cheeks flushing deep red. She hated herself for her pointless meddling, which had clearly caused Wen Yingyi embarrassment.
“Senior Sister, I’m sorry, I… I shouldn’t have, ugh—” He Chen stammered her apology. Before she could finish, Wen Yingyi stepped forward and covered her mouth, saying in a low, heavy voice, “If there is nothing else, go back. You are too noisy; do not disturb Master’s peaceful cultivation here.”
Having said that, Wen Yingyi stepped back to tidy her hair, once again concealing the red marks on her neck. Her gaze was like a knife, filled with a warning so sharp it stopped He Chen from saying anything else shocking.
Wen Yingyi had already helped her hide the fact that she’d destroyed the medicinal fields, yet He Chen had the audacity to deliver herself to the door and practically expose her own misdeeds from last night in public.
Seeing the two of them pulling and pushing—one hesitating to speak and the other desperate to drive the guest away—Chang Nong sensed something was amiss. She rose and stood before them, clasping her hands behind her back and leaning over to scrutinize the pair.
He Chen was red-faced, while Wen Yingyi’s eyes flickered nervously; both looked uncomfortable. Chang Nong grew thoughtful, her gaze shifting back to Wen Yingyi’s neck.
However, Wen Yingyi had already pulled her hair forward to cover the marks, so Chang Nong couldn’t see them. Nevertheless, He Chen’s words continued to echo in her mind.
“This injury on Yi’er’s hand—did you bite her?” Chang Nong took Wen Yingyi’s hand and pointed to the bite marks on the back of her palm.
“Ah—” He Chen stared blankly at the back of Wen Yingyi’s hand. The reddish tooth marks were clearly visible, making her realize just how hard she had bitten down last night. It was only natural for Wen Yingyi to be angry with her.
But then, she thought it wasn’t entirely her fault.
It was all because the food lately had been too poor; she couldn’t resist that big braised trotter in her dream—it was so fragrant and delicious. Who could hold back in the face of such a delicacy? Besides, she didn’t know it was a dream, let alone that it was Wen Yingyi’s hand…
Even if she couldn’t be entirely blamed, she had bitten her after all. Overcome with guilt, He Chen reached out to stroke the wound, but Wen Yingyi saw the move and quickly pulled her hand back, hiding it behind her back.
He Chen stood there awkwardly, her hands fidgeting before slowly dropping to her sides.
Remembering that she had come here specifically to apologize, she stopped debating who was right or wrong and confessed honestly: “Mmm, I bit her. I know I was wrong. Senior Sister, please don’t be angry, okay?”
She apologized cautiously, stealing a glance at Wen Yingyi before quickly lowering her head.
Chang Nong was stunned. No wonder Wen Yingyi had hesitated and failed to give a direct answer earlier. Her voice rose as she scolded He Chen, “How old are you now? To still be so mischievous! Spend less time in your Senior Sister’s room and more time reading your books.”
He Chen felt a surge of grievance. Keeping her head down, she slowly raised her hands, extending her left index finger and all five fingers on her right hand. “Replying to Master, I’m almost fifteen! And I went to see Senior Sister for a reason, it wasn’t for nothing.”
“Who at fifteen still acts as willfully as you, taking pleasure in biting people! During the time I was in seclusion, the affairs of the Hall relied entirely on Yi’er. She is already exhausted, yet you still cause her trouble. Speak—why did you bite your Senior Sister?”
Chang Nong’s worries flared up again; she was desperate to know what had happened yesterday.
Just a moment ago, when He Chen nearly collapsed and Wen Yingyi stepped forward to catch her, Chang Nong had also seen the red marks on Wen Yingyi’s neck. Connecting this with the fact that she had taken the Ten Thousand Wonders Bone-Eroding Pill, Chang Nong felt a sense of foreboding.
Chang Nong looked at Wen Yingyi again, examining her state. Disheveled hair, visible exhaustion, and an air of hesitation—something must have happened last night.
Although the founding ancestor’s lover was a woman and love between two women was not unheard of, it wouldn’t do for it to happen to Wen Yingyi.
Firstly, she was under a promise to a dear friend. Secondly, Wen Yingyi was a person of great talent, surpassing the others. If the day came when the miasma poison was cured and she chose not to return to the Wen family, Chang Nong’s selfish wish was for her to inherit the mantle of the Hall.
As for He Chen, she was the orphan of a junior sister and had been raised by Chang Nong herself. She was a bit spoiled and full of schemes, but she wasn’t bad at heart. Furthermore, He Chen had been raised primarily by Wen Yingyi. Linking the two of them together in her mind, Chang Nong’s face filled with worry. Absurd. This is too absurd.
“I… I just had a dream and mistook Senior Sister for a big braised trotter. Master is being a bit too fierce. I only came here to apologize to her,” He Chen muttered softly. Second Senior Sister was right; Master’s only beloved disciple was indeed the Eldest Senior Sister.
“What? A braised trotter?” Chang Nong’s lips trembled slightly. She found it utterly preposterous. “Has your Master deprived you of food or drink? To go so far as to gnaw on your Senior Sister—look at the trouble you’ve caused!”
Chang Nong grew angrier as she spoke. She reached for Wen Yingyi’s hand again, intending to speak to her.
He Chen suddenly interrupted with a complaint: “For the past six months, Master has been in seclusion frequently and won’t let us go down the mountain to set up stalls and earn money. The Hall has no spare cash, and the food has been getting worse and worse. I’m at the age where I’m growing; how am I supposed to survive on green vegetables every day?”
Chang Nong froze, her old face flushing slightly with guilt. She then noticed someone else was standing nearby and looked at Bu Lanfang, who had been silent for a long time.
Bu Lanfang was currently turning her head, looking around the room as if searching for something. Seeing Chang Nong’s gaze fall on her, she quickly said, “Replying to Master, the food in the Hall has a proper balance of meat and vegetables; the quality is not poor. It may be that the hot weather has affected Junior Sister’s appetite.”
Hearing this, Chang Nong nodded with satisfaction, her heart easing slightly. She asked, “If your other Senior Sisters can eat it, why can’t you?”
She lifted the hair from Wen Yingyi’s chest again, her anger still unquenched. “You even bit her neck—that is simply too much.”
“But I was asleep! In a dream, how am I supposed to know where I’m biting? I’m puzzled too!”
He Chen pouted. Her confusion was no less than Chang Nong’s. She couldn’t figure out for the life of her how she could have bitten the neck; she unconsciously began to imagine what kind of posture would be required to bite a neck so accurately. She also couldn’t understand why Wen Yingyi, who hated physical contact, would let her succeed once, let alone twice.
“You did wrong, yet you still claim you’re in the right! Is that a place for biting? If you had bitten a vital vein, you could have killed someone!”
“I already said I was dreaming! And… and it takes two to tango! Master should ask Senior Sister instead why she didn’t push me away.” He Chen felt aggrieved; how could she control things in a dream?
She summoned her courage and directed Chang Nong to question Wen Yingyi.
Chang Nong seemed to snap out of a trance, finding He Chen’s logic sound. She turned and asked Wen Yingyi, “Why didn’t you push her away?”
