Chapter 10: What Kind of Illness Did I Have?
He Chen had only closed her eyes for a short while before she heard the faint, rustling sounds of conversation outside the room.
Her heart skipped a beat. Wait, are those the voices of Second Senior Sister and Third Senior Sister? It’s not sleep paralysis?
A moment later, a “creak” sounded as the door was pushed open, and piercing light instantly flooded into the room.
“Is Junior Sister awake?” Xiang Qingqing entered carrying the stretcher, with Bu Lanfang following closely behind.
“Mmm.” He Chen’s body was unable to move, so she could only shift her eyes sideways, using her peripheral vision to peek at the newcomers.
“Oh my, what’s happened to Junior Sister? Is it a cramp?” Xiang Qingqing hurriedly set down the stretcher and leaned over to investigate. Seeing He Chen lying stiff as a board on the bed, looking at them sideways and rolling her eyes, she was quite frightened.
Fortunately, He Chen spoke up in time to deny it. “No, I don’t know what happened. I woke up and realized my body couldn’t move. Where is Eldest Senior Sister? Quickly, have her come check on me.”
“Eldest Senior Sister went to Master’s place early this morning.” Bu Lanfang took over the conversation, explaining, “Senior Sister said you had an ‘episode’ in the middle of the night and gave you some medicine. Perhaps this is the effect of the medication.”
“So that’s why we needed the stretcher,” Xiang Qingqing said, realization dawning on her.
“An episode? Medicine?” He Chen was full of suspicion. She had never heard of someone having a medical “episode” just because of their first period.
She asked: “What kind of illness did I have? And what medicine did she give me? My whole body feels incredibly uncomfortable right now!”
Xiang Qingqing suddenly remembered what she had seen this morning. While helping He Chen sit up, she asked, “Actually, this morning I saw a row of red bite marks on Eldest Senior Sister’s right palm. Does that have anything to do with you, Junior Sister?”
“Bite marks?” He Chen grew thoughtful, and the more she thought about it, the more things felt “off.”
She had fallen asleep very early last night. She only remembered being ravenously hungry in her dreams and vaguely hugging her cloth tiger for comfort. Later, she seemed to dream of holding a big braised trotter and gnawing on it. That trotter even had a faint scent of herbal medicine… Could it be that she had mistaken Eldest Senior Sister’s hand for a big trotter?
“Ah—” Thinking of this, He Chen closed her eyes and let out a dry wail. Heavens, how could she have done something so stupid!
“Junior Sister, bear with it.” Xiang Qingqing propped He Chen up and turned her head to instruct Bu Lanfang, “Third Junior Sister, come give me a hand.”
“Bear with what? There’s no point in bearing with it, I don’t want to live anymore—” He Chen’s mind was filled with images of tightly embracing Wen Yingyi last night and gnawing away. She felt she truly had no face left to see Wen Yingyi again.
“Did I hurt you?” Hearing her words, Xiang Qingqing hurriedly stopped her hands, not daring to move recklessly. “Junior Sister, since you can’t move, we have to move you to the stretcher so Third Junior Sister and I can carry you back…”
“It’s so embarrassing—” The more He Chen thought about it, the more miserable she felt. Blushing with shame, she lowered her head and covered her face with her hands. She was so immersed in her own foolish behavior from the previous night that she didn’t register a word of what Xiang Qingqing said.
Seeing He Chen’s distressed state, Bu Lanfang didn’t understand the cause but offered gentle comfort anyway: “No, no, at this hour everyone is working in the medicinal fields. No one will see you, so Junior Sister needn’t worry.”
“It’s too humiliating, truly too humiliating…” He Chen wallowed in self-pity and frustration.
Just then, she felt an itch on her back. Without thinking, she raised her left hand and reached back to scratch it. After a few scratches, the itch disappeared, and only then did she realize something was wrong.
“Huh? I can move! I can move!” He Chen cried out in surprise.
Xiang Qingqing also noticed the change and joined in the excitement. “That’s wonderful, Junior Sister! You can move!”
In reality, Wen Yingyi had calculated the time perfectly the night before. Using only twenty percent of her strength, the immobilization effect would wear off naturally once the time had passed without needing manual intervention.
She didn’t want anyone to know she possessed martial arts. When she left the room, He Chen was still sleeping soundly. If she had unblocked the points then, firstly, she worried about waking her up and making it hard to leave, and secondly, since He Chen was experiencing her period and physical discomfort, more sleep was beneficial for her.
Before going to her usual farm residence, Wen Yingyi had made a special detour to Bu Lanfang’s place to notify her and Xiang Qingqing to bring a stretcher to her room later to take He Chen away.
After giving her instructions, she walked two steps, then suddenly turned back. She raised her right hand to look at the wound, then, expressionless, stared at Bu Lanfang until the girl’s skin crawled. Xiang Qingqing, standing nearby, also felt a chill.
Wen Yingyi remembered that all of He Chen’s “misdeeds” the previous night were caused by Bu Lanfang’s failure to watch her properly, so she had offered a slight warning. Thus, the scene occurred where Bu Lanfang imitated her tone and complained to Xiang Qingqing.
“I just heard Second Senior Sister say that Eldest Senior Sister went to Master’s place?” He Chen asked while massaging her shoulders with her left hand. She then said to Bu Lanfang, “Third Senior Sister, my right hand is still injured. Help me massage my back, okay?”
“Alright—” Bu Lanfang shook her head with a smile, stepped closer to knead He Chen’s back, and replied: “Master emerges from seclusion today. Senior Sister went early to wait for him.”
“I see—” He Chen pondered for a moment, then said: “You two Senior Sisters should go back to your work first. I’ll wait here for Eldest Senior Sister to return.”
Bu Lanfang’s movements paused. “But Senior Sister instructed us to bring you back.”
“Eldest Senior Sister said I had an ‘episode’ last night and gave me medicine, but did she hand any medicine over to you two?” He Chen didn’t want to go back, but she didn’t state her intentions directly, using the medicine as a probe instead.
“No.” Xiang Qingqing and Bu Lanfang shook their heads simultaneously. “Why do you ask?”
Indeed, she didn’t!
He Chen said with a straight face: “That’s exactly it. Since I had an episode last night, how could it be cured with just one dose of medicine? I’ll wait here for Senior Sister to return. When she comes back, I’ll get the medicine from her, and then I’ll trouble you two to come pick me up.”
By saying this, her intention was to send the two away. In reality, she wanted to go find Wen Yingyi herself to offer a proper apology, erase her bad image in Wen Yingyi’s heart, and incidentally see the Master she hadn’t seen in a long time.
He Chen spoke with such conviction and a solemn expression that she seemed like a different person from her usual self. However, the two sisters knew her through and through. Observing her behavior, they guessed she had other motives and wouldn’t be easily deceived.
Bu Lanfang and Xiang Qingqing both shook their heads, smiling at each other without exposing her.
Xiang Qingqing asked: “Does Junior Sister really want to stay? I saw it clearly just now—Eldest Senior Sister’s expression was not very good. When she returns, a lecture will likely be unavoidable.”
“This matter is indeed my fault. It’s only natural for Senior Sister to scold me.” Hearing this, He Chen also felt she had been quite absurd. She came to take care of someone, only to end up being the one cared for—and even biting her. She sighed and hung her head.
“Then—” Xiang Qingqing hesitated, then continued asking: “Are those bite marks on Eldest Senior Sister’s hand really from you?”
“Mmm.” He Chen admitted helplessly, her head hanging even lower. Since it was only her and Wen Yingyi in the room last night, who else could it have been?
“In that case, Junior Sister should follow us back. Eldest Senior Sister looks quite angry. Today she was not only spiritless but also had her hair hanging loose, which is very rare. In all these years, when have we ever seen her like that? And the way she looked at Third Senior Sister… she was clenching her teeth as if she wanted to swallow someone whole…”
“E-Eldest Senior Sister is truly that angry?” He Chen stammered, trying to defend herself: “Perhaps… Second Senior Sister saw wrong? She was just…”
Just what, He Chen couldn’t say.
Bu Lanfang couldn’t help but laugh and asked, “Just what?”
It seems I really made her angry. Then I definitely can’t go back; I must go apologize as soon as possible.
The more He Chen thought about it, the more panicked she became, fearing Wen Yingyi would ignore her from this day forward. Even though she knew Wen Yingyi wasn’t that kind of person and wouldn’t treat her like that, she couldn’t stop her mind from wandering.
“Second Senior Sister, Third Senior Sister, don’t send me back anymore. Send me to Master’s place instead!”
