Meng Yuan was so poor he couldn’t survive, eventually dying from exhaustion on a construction site. When he opened his eyes again, he had become a sickly “stand-in” character in a dogblood (melodramatic) novel, diagnosed with only two years to live.

An all-powerful tycoon, seeing that Meng Yuan’s days were numbered, approached him for a fake marriage. In the original book, the tycoon was generous to the stand-in but gave him money instead of love, never even visiting him until his death. The original character spent his days sitting on piles of cash, weeping until he died of a broken heart.

Meng Yuan’s take: In the eyes of a pauper, there is only one word that matters Money.

He felt as though the heavens had finally opened their eyes, giving him a two-year “rich person experience card” to make up for his past suffering. Being wealthy was indeed wonderful. The only problem was that the tycoon, who never appeared in the original book, suddenly started hovering around him. Once. Twice. He even god forbid started caring about Meng Yuan’s health.

Meng Yuan simply assumed the man was reminding him: Die on time, don’t overstay your welcome. He would nod earnestly: “Don’t worry, I know the drill!”

When the two-year deadline arrived, Meng Yuan lay contentedly in his hospital bed waiting for the end. But as the days passed, despite his chronic illness, he showed no signs of actually dying. Meng Yuan couldn’t sit still. The contract was ending, and the “White Moonlight” (the tycoon’s true love) was about to return. If he didn’t die soon, he’d be in breach of contract and have to pay a penalty!

Determined not to be poor again, Meng Yuan made a bold move: he fled in the middle of the night with his massive fortune. He left behind a suicide note so tragic and beautifully written it was the peak of his literary career. Little did he know, that letter would cause an absolute storm.

Three months later, Meng Yuan was sunbathing on a beach on the other side of the world. The tycoon appeared from the distant shoreline and snatched the sunglasses right off his face. Though the man looked calm and composed, his voice trembled as he spoke through gritted teeth: “I almost believed you were actually dead.”

Shocked out of his wits, Meng Yuan fainted on the spot. And that caused yet another storm.
