The world only knew the current Prime Minister, Lin Huaiyu, as a treacherous official who brought ruin to the country and its people. However, no one knew that it was this “villainous” minister who personally pushed the new Emperor onto the throne.
When Su Yang was destitute, Lin Huaiyu knelt in the snow until his knees were permanently damaged to beg for a chance at his survival. During the struggle for succession, Lin Huaiyu used his own body to block a poisoned cup, which left him with a lifetime of frailty and broken health.
Now that the imperial court is peaceful, Lin Huaiyu finds himself locked upon the dragon bed by the very “wolf cub” he raised, forced to endure the Emperor’s favor night after night. Every night, Su Yang takes from him without restraint and asks, “Now that the Prime Minister has left me, who else could possibly satisfy you?”
Lin Huaiyu closes his eyes and swallows the metallic taste of blood in his throat. He never utters a single word. Su Yang has no idea that Lin Huaiyu is dying.
On the day of the Empress’s coronation ceremony, the Qinchun Palace, where Lin Huaiyu was imprisoned, erupted into a towering fire. Su Yang abandoned the ceremony and rushed into the inferno, but he emerged with nothing.
Historical records state that the new Emperor coughed up blood that night. He sat in a daze until dawn while clutching the only possession Lin Huaiyu left behind.
A year later, amidst the misty rains of Jiangnan, the Prime Minister who was supposed to have died in the fire leans languidly against a soft couch. Su Yang, with eyes bloodshot, throws himself toward him.
However, as Lin Huaiyu sees him approach, he gently shakes the golden bell on his wrist and allows envoys from various nations to gallantly present him with rare medicinal herbs.
“Your Majesty could not even see through a fake death,” Lin Huaiyu says. “Why speak of an eternity together?”
Later, everyone in Jiangnan heard that a handsome gentleman knelt at the gates of the Lin Manor every day.
No matter who tried to drive him away, he only repeated in a hoarse voice, “Huaiyu, let me see if your coughing of blood has improved.”
