The Sickly Beauty Beta Got Pregnant After A Political Marriage - Chapter 5
The scorching, heavy breath brushed against the side of his neck, causing Shen Jiayu’s body to instantly stiffen. His soft, waxy voice trembled as he spoke: “Mr. Wen…”
In his panic, Shen Jiayu guessed whether Mr. Wen was behaving this way because of his susceptibility period (rut). He had read in books that Alphas become emotionally unstable and exhibit abnormal behavior during this time, often feeling a strong urge to mark an Omega.
If that were the case, Mr. Wen must be acting this way due to the onset of his rut. However, Shen Jiayu was not an Omega, at this moment, his identity as a Beta brought him a small, flickering sense of security.
Meanwhile, the Alpha was indeed experiencing a powerful surge of pheromones, which made his headache increasingly sharp and began to cloud his consciousness.
An Alpha’s instinct is to plunder and possess, but his remaining threads of logic told him that the youth before him was not an Omega, but a Beta who could not be marked.
Wen Xiuheng frowned slightly as a portion of his consciousness cleared. After a long moment, he stood up straight and looked down at Shen Jiayu.
The youth’s slender, petite frame trembled slightly in the moonlight. His lowered eyelashes fluttered like the wings of a butterfly in a storm, and his beautiful eyes were misted with unshed tears, shimmering with fragmented light.
It seems I just scared him, Wen Xiuheng thought with a helpless sigh. He took a step back and said hoarsely, “I’m sorry.”
“…Huh?” Shen Jiayu snapped out of his panic and looked up at him.
The soft, trembling lilt at the end of his voice was like a tiny hook, snagging a place in Wen Xiuheng’s heart.
Standing in the shadows, Wen Xiuheng’s eyes darkened, and his voice unconsciously became laced with restraint and suppressed desire.
“Go out, Jiayu,” the Alpha’s voice was incredibly raspy as he took the tray from Shen Jiayu’s hands. “I’ll be fine once I take the medicine.”
Wen Xiuheng knew very well that this was only the very beginning, the faint precursors before the true rut arrived.
Hearing the Alpha’s words, Shen Jiayu realized that Mr. Wen seemed to have regained some of his senses, and his tension and anxiety eased slightly.
Even though he heard the Alpha tell him to go back and rest, he was still worried. Shen Jiayu knitted his brows slightly, his eyes filled with genuine concern as he looked at Wen Xiuheng.
Such an expression caused Wen Xiuheng to freeze for a moment. This kind of real, pure concern was not something he encountered often.
Despite the raging headache, Wen Xiuheng tried his best to soften his voice, even adding a hint of a coaxing tone: “Go back and rest. I’m fine.”
He couldn’t let Shen Jiayu stay here any longer, it wouldn’t be good for the boy.
The youth bit his lip and finally gave a slow nod. He figured that Mr. Wen probably wanted to rest alone and that he shouldn’t continue to disturb him.
Shen Jiayu said softly, “Okay… Goodnight, Mr. Wen.”
“Goodnight,” Wen Xiuheng replied hoarsely.
As Shen Jiayu turned to leave, his slender, snowy-white nape was exposed to the Alpha’s gaze. On that smooth, delicate skin, there was no trace of a scent gland, the hallmark of a Beta. This was also one of the initial reasons Wen Xiuheng had agreed to the political marriage.
He was long accustomed to marriages that existed in name only and knew he wasn’t the type to be passionate about romance. Marrying a Beta simply eliminated a lot of trouble.
Yet, at this moment, he began to feel that something was gradually deviating from his expectations.
Behind Shen Jiayu’s back, the Alpha watched his nape from the shadows, his gaze deep and inscrutable.
After returning to his room, Shen Jiayu remained worried about Wen Xiuheng.
He stayed up until the early hours of the morning before opening his door and stepping out again. Treading lightly to the other’s door, he found it tightly shut.
Shen Jiayu felt conflicted, wondering if Mr. Wen felt any better after taking the medicine.
Fortunately, Auntie Cui passed by. Seeing Shen Jiayu standing hesitantly in front of the door, she immediately understood his worry.
Auntie Cui comforted him in a low voice, saying that the Young Master had come out once after taking the medicine and looked to be in better shape. She told him not to worry too much, and only then did Shen Jiayu return to his room and fall into a deep sleep.
The next day, because he had gone to bed late, Shen Jiayu woke up a bit behind schedule. When he went downstairs, he saw Wen Xiuheng already seated at the dining table in a suit, looking just like his usual self.
Shen Jiayu was surprised but mostly happy. He couldn’t help but quicken his pace down the stairs.
“Mr. Wen, are you feeling better?”
Wen Xiuheng looked up. A bright, dazzling, and pure smile accompanied by a sweet, soft voice appeared before him.
The youth’s rose-colored eyes were curved slightly, and his beautiful lips were turned upward. Such an infectious smile made it impossible for Wen Xiuheng to look away for a moment.
Perhaps because Shen Jiayu’s concern was so real and pure, even Wen Xiuheng’s face, which rarely showed emotion, changed.
“I’m fine now,” the Alpha said, a hint of a smile touching his lips.
“That’s wonderful. I’m glad you’re okay.” Shen Jiayu’s smile was obedient and sweet, his voice soft and waxy.
After breakfast, Shen Jiayu once again followed him to the entryway like a little tail.
When Wen Xiuheng turned around, Shen Jiayu beamed and repeated those soft words: “Mr. Wen, have a successful day at work.”
This time, Wen Xiuheng slowly raised his hand. Under the youth’s somewhat confused gaze, he gently stroked the boy’s soft, fluffy hair and said in a deep, magnetic voice, “Thank you.”
Even after the Alpha lowered his hand, Shen Jiayu remained standing there, looking dazed. He tilted his head like a confused kitten, not quite having processed the fact that the Alpha had just patted his head.
Wen Xiuheng gave a low chuckle. Looking into the “kitten’s” eyes, he asked slowly, “Are you free this afternoon?”
The dazed kitten nodded.
“I’ll have the driver pick you up this afternoon.”
“Where are we going, Mr. Wen…?”
Wen Xiuheng said calmly, “The Civil Affairs Bureau. To get our marriage certificate.”
