- Chapter 6 - Fake Young Master Alpha x Real Young Master Alpha (6)
It was clear that Su Yi and Pei Yingjue were not on the same wavelength. When Pei Yingjue received a bouquet of fresh, pink roses outside the laboratory for the third time, he was no longer surprised.
“Flowers again? This Omega is certainly persistent.”
The laboratory session had just ended. The students on the shift had not even had time to remove their lab coats before walking out to see the vibrant bouquet. It stood out prominently against the cold, sterile tones of the experimental building. Pei Yingjue looked at the blooming flowers with his usual indifferent expression, appearing as though no amount of passionate affection could move him.
“Wait, is there something extra this time? It used to be just greeting cards, but today it looks like a love letter.” A senior student from the same group glanced at Pei Yingjue and quickly changed his tone. He pointed at a white, gold-stamped envelope tied to the marble-textured wrapping paper.
Pei Yingjue did not enjoy being the center of public attention. Furthermore, an elaborately packaged envelope like this likely contained words not meant for outsiders. He picked up the bouquet and detached the envelope. He did not open it, choosing instead to place it directly into his school uniform pocket.
“Yes,” Pei Yingjue responded curtly.
“I understand.” The senior could not help but laugh at his actions. He turned around to disperse the curious onlookers. “What are you all crowding around for? If you do not want to finish your shift, you can go back inside and keep working. I happen to have some new techniques to teach you.”
Pei Yingjue was a cold individual. No one in the lab was particularly close to him, and they had gathered at the door purely out of curiosity. Following the senior’s dismissal, the group scattered immediately.
“Have fun,” the senior added.
Noticing the senior’s meaningful look, which suggested a complete misunderstanding of the situation, Pei Yingjue frowned slightly. However, he said nothing. There was no need to dissect his private matters in front of the public. He took the flowers and left the building to head toward the dormitory.
Morristy Academy was the third-ranked school in the Empire. Its facilities were top-tier, and most students were from wealthy or noble backgrounds. Even the scholarship students were relatively well-off. Consequently, the campus was not crowded. The school provided single rooms for everyone. While it did not compare to a private villa, it was quite comfortable. It suited Pei Yingjue perfectly, as he disliked unnecessary contact with others.
Since his off-campus residence was far from the school, Pei Yingjue usually stayed in the dorms unless it was a holiday. When he opened the door, the warm yellow sensor lights turned on automatically. He carried the flowers toward the balcony.
The transparent glass door slid open to reveal two slightly withered bouquets in the corner. One was a mix of white and green lisianthus, and the other consisted of light blue delphiniums and white roses. Now, a bunch of enchanting pink roses joined them.
Pei Yingjue set the new addition down. The flowers Su Yi sent were consistently beautiful. The previous two bouquets had featured cards with brief messages. One mentioned that the weather was pleasant and the pigeons at the lake were a good distraction. The other suggested that blue and white were perfect for decorating a room.
In fact, it was not just cards. Small gifts like aromatherapy, cushions, and eye masks frequently appeared at his door. Even though he had never shared his room number, the young master of the Su family seemed to have no trouble finding it. Every day, Su Yi would attempt to chat with him, subtly inquiring about the fate of the gifts. He seemed convinced they would be thrown away.
Pei Yingjue pushed the face-down cards on his desk aside. In reality, he had kept them. The room was large enough that a few gifts did not take up much space. There were many ways to reject someone, and he had no desire to trample on another person’s feelings.
He opened the latest envelope. Instead of a letter, it contained a ticket. The silver-white card featured blood-red text that read: Welcome to EMBER’s Performance. The location was White Bird Silver Moon Lake, and the time was next Wednesday at 9:00 PM. It appeared to be a front-row seat. Even though Pei Yingjue rarely participated in academy activities, he had heard of the band EMBER. It was a student-led group composed of Alphas that was frequently discussed on campus forums.
He wondered if Su Yi was truly interested in such things. He did not dwell on the thought and placed the ticket back into the envelope. He intended to reject the invitation as he had done before.
A notification chimed on his phone.
Su Yi: Is the experiment over? Su Yi: Do you want to go to the lake to relax next Wednesday night?
Pei Yingjue stared at Su Yi’s white profile picture. He reached out to touch the gland at the back of his neck, which felt uncomfortably warm. Ever since he had marked Su Yi, his gland had felt swollen. For a man who had practiced self-restraint for years, breaking that seal meant his suppressed desires were returning with a vengeance. Anything related to Su Yi enticed him to recall the events in the dark room. He found himself wanting to mark the Omega again.
Pei Yingjue closed his eyes and took a slow breath to suppress the thought. When he opened them, he began typing. Their agreed treatment time was every Sunday. Wednesday was outside of that scope, and he had no intention of accompanying Su Yi to a performance. That would fall into the category of an emotional connection.
He decisively replied with a rejection. The status on the screen quickly changed to “The other party is typing.” After several repetitions, no message was sent. Pei Yingjue assumed that after so many rejections, the young master’s passion was finally fading. He was not surprised. He then exited the chat to open a new email.
“Does he have an arrangement at the lab on Wednesday night?”
On the open-air balcony, Su Yi was wearing a leather jacket. His elbows rested on the glass railing as he looked at his phone. The wind ruffled his hair.
Hai Tingyan raised an eyebrow and spoke with a displeased tone. “Scholarship students are not allowed in the lab building on Wednesdays. Does he not know that?”
This rule was a recent addition because a specific research group held private meetings on Wednesdays. It was an arrogant policy, and it was impossible for Pei Yingjue to be unaware of it.
“He replied this way precisely because he knows the rule,” Su Yi said. He swiped up on his phone. In their previous chats, the other party usually replied with brief words or not at all. It was an obvious rejection. Pei Yingjue was not actually busy; he simply did not want to come. “Being busy” was a mutually understood excuse.
Pei Yingjue was leaving no room for ambiguity. Su Yi let out a low laugh.
“You are still laughing after being rejected?” Hai Tingyan stepped forward. His tall frame leaned against the railing as he looked at the phone screen, effectively circling Su Yi in his arms. “He has no taste,” Hai Tingyan added indignantly. Seeing that Su Yi did not look sad, a secret sense of happiness bloomed in his heart.
Su Yi remained unbothered. He tilted his head, his grey eyes filled with a sly smile. “It is fine. He will come.”
“How do you know?” Hai Tingyan asked.
Su Yi did not answer. Instead, he showed Hai Tingyan an email from the academy. It stated that a preliminary screening for league award winners would be held soon. Any Alpha with gland defects would be disqualified from the Alliance selection. Su Yi had a Council badge, so the screening was not an issue for him, but it was a significant problem for Pei Yingjue.
“He will come looking for you?” Hai Tingyan asked.
“No,” Su Yi said decisively. He retracted his phone. “But I can go looking for him. That is what a secret admirer should do. When the person they like encounters a problem, they should provide help as promptly as possible.”
Su Yi had consulted a doctor who informed him that once a week was the minimum frequency for his treatment. However, he needed more frequent pheromone exposure to recover quickly. Once a week was insufficient. He needed Pei Yingjue to mark him more often. Although they had a formal agreement, rules were meant to be broken.
Su Yi looked at Hai Tingyan and held out his hand. “Did you bring the medicine I asked for?”
“I am sorry. While your pheromone levels are lower than before, reaching normal values requires long-term treatment and frequent temporary marking. There are no drugs that can achieve a short-term reduction. We suggest you work with your partner to increase the frequency of the markings.”
Pei Yingjue left the consultation room. The hospital corridor smelled of disinfectant and bitter medicine. He did not check his messages until he was in the car heading back to school.
Senior: I am sorry, Xiao Pei. The medical staff for this screening are from the Alliance. See if you can find a way to get through it. The preliminary requirements are not high, but they will be strict during the final results.
Pei Yingjue rubbed his brow.
Pei Yingjue: I understand. Thank you.
The senior was a former student who now worked in the school medical group. She had helped him hide his condition in the past, marking it as a minor “gland defect.” This time, however, the Alliance’s direct involvement meant he could no longer hide it. He specifically needed to lower his pheromone content, but that put him in a difficult position.
He looked out the window at the passing lights. Without the correct medicine, his only option was to find someone to help him. He immediately dismissed the idea of asking Su Yi. He needed to suppress his instincts and maintain their professional agreement. He could not afford to sink deeper into that relationship.
He also could not bring himself to find a stranger. If he were that type of person, the incident in the equipment room would never have happened. His pheromone disorder had caused his parents to abandon him years ago, and now it was threatening his future. He leaned his head against the window and laughed quietly at the irony. He decided to visit the “Moon Market” the next day to look for unofficial medication.
Rain began to fall as the car stopped at the school gates. Pei Yingjue did not have an umbrella, so he held his medical papers over his head and ran toward the dorms. As he approached his door, he saw a tall figure standing there.
In the rainy night, Su Yi was leaning against the wall with his hands in his pockets. The streetlamp reflected off his earring, catching Pei Yingjue’s eye. Pei Yingjue’s breath hitched for a moment. He had assumed Su Yi would have enough sense not to wait outside his room.
He walked closer and realized Su Yi was soaked. His collar and the hem of his pants were dripping.
“Who told you to come?” Pei Yingjue asked sharply.
Su Yi looked up slowly. His eyes seemed to have lost focus, and they were rimmed with an abnormal red.
“You are here,” Su Yi said with a smile.
He swayed as he spoke, forcing Pei Yingjue to reach out and support him. Su Yi’s skin was burning hot.
“If you are sick, do not move around. Get inside first,” Pei Yingjue said. His anger was replaced by concern. He gripped Su Yi’s arm and pulled him close as he unlocked the door. He was not heartless enough to leave a sick person in the rain.
As the door opened, Su Yi collapsed against him. He spoke in a faint, panting voice.
“Pei Yingjue, I am not sick. My rut period has arrived. Knowing that, are you still willing to take me in?”
