- Chapter 7 - Embarrassment
Du Zuilan was momentarily stunned.
The two strands of hair framing her temples made her look both playful and adorably well-behaved. Her gaze lingered on the candy in Yan Xunzhen’s hand, like a little princess who longed for it but hesitated out of wariness, too timid to reach out.
Yan Xunzhen guessed that the reason she skipped breakfast was likely due to hating the person along with everything associated disliking her so much that she didn’t dare eat anything she bought for her.
So, after glancing at the expression on the other woman’s face, she added, “This was just given to me by your crew. Don’t worry.”
Don’t worry, it’s really not poisoned, and I didn’t drug it… Yan Xunzhen silently thought to herself.
The surroundings were noisy, but their spot was relatively secluded, so no one else seemed to notice them. Draped in a high-end tailored blazer, her presence was no less imposing, yet her slender hand remained patiently outstretched, exuding an unexpectedly gentle demeanor.
Du Zuilan’s delicate, pale fingers slowly reached out and took the candy from her palm.
Peeling off the plastic wrapper, a faint, sweet fragrance wafted out. The pink candy was tucked between her soft lips, revealing glimpses of pearly white teeth and a rosy tongue.
She held the candy in her mouth, childishly pushing it to one side, causing a small bulge in her cheek like a little hamster stuffing its face with treats.
For some reason, Yan Xunzhen suddenly felt the urge to keep feeding her. A strange itch flickered in her chest. She coughed lightly, using the motion of tucking her hair behind her ear to mask her momentary distraction.
She liked spicy food, but she loved sweets even more. In the past, she always carried chocolates or hard candies with her.
Not just for herself, giving sweets to others and seeing the happiness on their faces was a mood booster. She had always believed that.
And seeing Du Zuilan accept the candy she offered made her inexplicably happier.
Casually, as if chatting with a friend, she struck up a conversation: “I think the strawberry flavor is pretty good. There’s this strawberry milk one from Youran’s brand, that one’s even better.”
Du Zuilan hesitated for a moment before replying softly, “Mm.”
It was rare for her to speak to Yan Xunzhen so calmly. “I’ve… tried it before.”
Yan Xunzhen’s lips curled slightly. She adjusted the blazer draped over her shoulders, her arms glistening faintly with sweat in the sweltering heat, yet still clean and fresh, carrying a subtle hint of Longjing tea from her pheromones.
Faced with such an approachable and stunning beauty, it was hard for anyone to stay cold. “If you like it, I’ll bring you some next time.”
Du Zuilan neither agreed nor refused. Just then, a burst of commotion in the distance, carried by the wind, interrupted their conversation.
The strands of Du Zuilan’s hair were tousled by the warm breeze, tangling against her collar before she lowered her head to brush them aside, revealing a glimpse of the nape of her neck and the faint scent of orange wine.
Yan Xunzhen didn’t mind the lack of a response. But in that moment, it suddenly occurred to her, she had forgotten to mention that orange-flavored candy was pretty good too.
The two of them stood together, enveloped in a silence that was unexpectedly harmonious. After a while, the moment was finally broken by someone approaching from afar.
This woman was the same one Yan Xunzhen had seen earlier, chatting happily with Du Zuilan. Now, she was wiping sweat from her forehead and striding over casually, carefully holding her hair bun with one hand. Only when she spotted Du Zuilan did her eyes light up, revealing a row of white teeth as she grinned with apparent guilelessness: “Ah, Zuilan, you’re here?”
Hearing her call, Du Zuilan looked up and smiled faintly. “Yes. Gu Yueli.”
Gu Yueli?
Yan Xunzhen pressed her lips together. This name was all too familiar, it held significant weight in the original novel. In the end, Gu Yueli had teamed up with the true alpha to dismantle Yan Xunzhen’s company. She had even stood her ground for Du Zuilan against the true alpha for a long time before ultimately stepping aside in defeat.
So Gu Yue Li and Du Zuilan had met this early, and their relationship seemed quite friendly at that.
Yan Xunzhen’s thoughts drifted uncontrollably until Gu Yueli greeted her, snapping her back to reality.
“Hello! You’re Zuilan’s friend, right?” Gu Yue Li spoke in a rapid-fire manner, leaving no room for breath. “What a coincidence! My agent just called me away, so everyone came down here. It’s so much cooler under the shade than up there. I wonder which kind-hearted boss talked to the director about it, hahaha!”
Yan Xunzhen lowered her long lashes, content to let her good deed go uncredited.
Meanwhile, Du Zuilan glanced at her briefly before lowering her gaze to the tips of her shoes, her lips curving into a gentle smile as she nodded.
Unfazed by the subdued response, Gu Yue Li continued chattering away: “Listen, Zuilan you must’ve read the script already, right?”
Du Zuilan, a true acting fanatic, could probably recite the entire script from memory. Naturally, she had read it, so she nodded in confirmation.
Gu Yue Li then grew even more mysterious. Tugging at Du Zuilan’s wide sleeve and beckoning Yan Xunzhen along, she led them to a more secluded spot. “Right now, it looks like the script is going to change. That’s what my agent just told me.”
“Change?” Du Zuilan still had candy in her mouth, her expression adorably bewildered, like a kitten that made one want to ruffle her hair.
Sensing Du Zuilan’s keen interest in anything related to acting, Gu Yue Li pressed on eagerly: “The script’s being revised mainly because the investors want the fifth female lead to take over the heroine’s cliff-jumping scene. A lot of other roles are getting cut too, including yours.”
She was eager to share but suddenly stopped. Having scenes taken away probably wouldn’t sit well with Du Zuilan.
Du Zuilan opened her mouth to speak, her heart uneasy at the thought of changes affecting her performance. But before her anxiety could surface, the sweetness on her tongue calmed her.
Du Zuilan replied evenly, “Well, there’s nothing we can do about it.”
She seemed reluctant to let Yan Xunzhen delve too deeply into the matter, hoping to brush it off lightly. But seeing her reaction, Gu Yue Li couldn’t hold back: “The worst part is, that fifth female lead was probably planted by Junyan Entertainment. Otherwise, I’d have my mom step in and fight fire with fire!”
“Ugh, Junyan is such a pain from their lowly employees right up to that power-abusing Miss Yan at the top. Tch, rotten to the core.”
At this point, Gu Yueli noticed Du Zuilan’s thoughtful expression and finally closed her mouth, deciding not to disturb her further.
So, she turned her gaze to Yan Xunzhen instead, her eyes lighting up as she asked the elegant, noble, and strikingly beautiful woman, “By the way, you’re an alpha too, right? What’s your name?”
Yan Xunzhen: “…”
What a coincidence. Yours truly happens to be the very Miss Yan you just scolded.
