- Chapter 5 - Hospital
The first thing that met her eyes was a lifeless, pale expanse, accompanied by the rhythmic beeping of a blood pressure monitor.
The scent of disinfectant mixed with tea lingered at the tip of her nose, making Yan Xunzhen’s head throb. Unable to bear the smell, she raised her hand to cover her nose.
But as she lowered her hand and rested it on her thigh, a sharp pain shot through her at the slightest touch. Looking down, she saw that the red marks from yesterday had now turned into dark bruises. Yan Xunzhen scoffed at herself those earlier pinches had been far from gentle.
Aside from the wounds on her legs, the most noticeable discomfort came from the back of her neck. That thing probably called a gland was throbbing violently, sending waves of numbing pain through her entire body, while a restless fire seemed to burn in her veins.
Her throat felt parched, and she coughed dryly twice. Before she could lower her head to review the documents in her hands again, the office door swung open, and a bespectacled beta in a white lab coat walked in.
“Well, well, you look surprisingly alive,” the beta teased. “Miss Yan, why didn’t you think of me yesterday when you came for the suppressant? Finally scared of dying today?”
The person before her was surnamed Song, the only decent one among the original host’s many unsavory friends.
Back in the day, Dr. Song had gotten along quite well with the original host. But after the original host forcibly pursued Du Zui Lan and suddenly fell ill, Dr. Song had been deeply disappointed. He was the only one who treated the female lead well and even tried to steer the scumbag alpha back onto the right path. However, the scumbag ignored him, and in the end, this friend left for abroad, disheartened.
The scumbag had been sick, but Yan Xunzhen wasn’t. After piecing together the plot, she had come straight to this sensible friend when she felt her gland acting up.
“Yeah,” Yan Xunzhen replied, setting aside the company documents in her hands and relaxing a little in the presence of this rational person. Her tone was no longer guarded. “So, Dr. Song, what do you think of my condition?”
Dr. Song clicked his tongue. “Let me put it this way something was already off when you took that suppressant shot yesterday.”
Yan Xunzhen recalled the hesitant look on the doctor’s face yesterday, and her heart sank slightly. She motioned for Dr. Song to continue.
“First, from your own perspective, don’t you feel like your pheromones have changed? The shift might not be drastic, but I think it’s a positive one. It’s like, like…” Dr. Song searched for the right words. “Like an upgrade.”
Yan Xunzhen raised an eyebrow.
She couldn’t be blamed for this, she wasn’t a native alpha and wasn’t well-versed in the local “lingo.” So she pressed on, “Why would that happen?”
“As for the cause of this phenomenon, I’m not entirely sure yet. I’ve never encountered such a case before. My current hypotheses are: first, you experienced some major incident,” Dr. Song paused, mentally dismissing the idea, “but no, I haven’t heard of you being hospitalized after an accident. Or second, you met someone who’s influencing you positively.”
Yan Xunzhen’s heart skipped a beat.
She was a transmigrator, that counted as a major incident, right?
She coughed lightly and said, “If it’s a good thing, then there’s no need to dwell on it.”
Dr. Song shook his head repeatedly, his expression serious. “No, no, no. The most serious issue is that your gland has also undergone changes. That suppressant shot didn’t really help, what actually calmed you down afterward was contact with a certain pheromone source.”
The source of the pheromones she had touched earlier, couldn’t have been Du Zui Lan, could it?
Her mind slightly unsettled, Yan Xunzhen let out an indifferent “Oh.”
Dr. Song brushed her hair back. Her glasses gave her a sharp appearance, but this edge was softened by her easygoing personality, making her very approachable. Speaking with Yan Xunzhen, she was effortlessly comfortable: “Who did you run into yesterday? You should keep an eye on that person. Ideally, both of you should come to the hospital together so I can give you a thorough check-up.”
Yan Xunzhen felt a twinge of guilt and murmured an agreement.
She stood up, ready to leave. Today, she was wearing another stylish dress after all, the original owner’s wardrobe seemed to consist solely of this fashion so when she rose, the bruises on her legs became visible. At a glance, they looked like marks left after a passionate night.
Dr. Song caught a glimpse and frowned. “What’s going on here? Did you bump into something, or don’t tell me you’ve been messing around with some alpha-omega relationship out there?”
Yan Xunzhen rubbed her temples. “I pinched myself.”
She lifted her gaze and added, “Before taking the suppressant yesterday, I couldn’t control myself, so I pinched my legs a few times.”
Dr. Song snorted, teasing her. “I find that hard to believe. Are you sure you didn’t force yourself on someone, and they retaliated by pinching you? Weren’t you always interested in that Miss Du Zui Lan? I even heard you were particularly eager to get your hands on her?”
Yan Xunzhen sighed. Her notorious reputation and the label of being obsessed with the female lead’s beauty, who knew when that would ever fade?
“No,” Yan Xunzhen said. “Also, I was confused and impulsive before, acting out of nowhere. But now I’ve come to my senses. I just want to be normal friends with her.”
“I’ve changed,” Yan Xunzhen added, a faint smile tugging at her lips, exuding a confidence Dr. Song had never seen before. “Don’t worry, I won’t do anything to Du Zui Lan.”
Dr. Song chuckled. “You’d better not.”
She also stood up, holding a medical record, a clipboard, and a pen. Brushing off her white coat, she patted Yan Xunzhen’s shoulder. “Let’s go.”
Yan Xunzhen nodded but was tugged by her coat in the opposite direction of the hospital entrance, leaving her slightly puzzled.
Dr. Song raised an eyebrow. “What? Did you forget? Your assistant called me yesterday and asked me to look after Du Zui Lan. As her ‘friend,’ aren’t you going to check on her?”
“Honestly, it’s just bad luck. She was discharged yesterday, barely a few hours out, and got sent back here. Luckily, I checked on her earlier, she’s doing alright.”
Yan Xunzhen unconsciously clenched her hand, fingertips grazing her palm.
Clearly conflicted.
After a long pause, she finally murmured, “Let’s go see her.”
The omega ward was quiet, the air fragrant. Du Zui Lan was in a private room, and since her condition wasn’t severe, visitors were allowed.
Du Zui Lan was curled up in bed, still asleep. It was still early, just past nine.
Soft golden sunlight streamed through the window, casting over Du Zui Lan’s furrowed brows, making her appear even more fragile and pale. Beads of sweat dotted her forehead, her lower lip bitten tightly clearly trapped in a nightmare, restless and uneasy.
Yan Xunzhen stood at the doorway, the sound of her high heels so quiet it was nearly inaudible, afraid of waking her. She only glanced from afar.
Dr. Song continued, “Her pheromones were slightly stimulated, making them unstable. Dr. Gu already examined her yesterday, so I didn’t do much checking. But overall, I think she’s lucid.”
Yan Xunzhen thought to herself, But yesterday, she could barely recognize people.
She seemed to recall something else: “Did she come here alone? Where’s her assistant?”
Dr. Song pondered for a moment. “Not sure. I didn’t see her assistant.”
“Your schedule tomorrow includes attending Du Zuilan’s project launch event. The director has already been informed.”
Du Zuilan was now lying alone in the hospital. Who would take her to the launch event? Just recovering from illness, only to rush off to social engagements again.
An omega working this hard even a workhorse wouldn’t be pushed this far!
Yan Xunzhen’s heart wavered again. After a long pause, she glanced at Dr. Song beside her and asked, “Are you free right now?”
Dr. Song shook the medical records and clipboard in her hand. “Young Miss, unlike you, I’m actually very busy, okay?”
“Can’t you take some time off to help me take Du Zuilan to her filming set?” Yan Xunzhen hesitated.
Dr. Song looked incredulous, her dark hair swaying as she tossed it back and rolled her eyes at Yan Xunzhen. “Young Miss, are you serious? I’m swamped, and you want me to take leave? You’re the one with free time! Why don’t you take her?”
“I…”
A rare look of bewilderment crossed Yan Xunzhen’s striking face. She wanted to say, Because I’m the cannon-fodder scum alpha, so I have to keep my distance from Du Zuilan to avoid her thinking I have ulterior motives. I just need to quietly be good to her, ensuring I don’t end up dead.
But then she heard Dr. Song say, “Didn’t you say you’ve changed? Then show it through action. Even if you arrange for me to take her, Du Zuilan won’t think you’re the one being kind to her.”
Yan Xunzhen’s long lashes trembled slightly, stunned.
Dr. Song pressed on, “Didn’t you say you’re just ordinary friends? There’s nothing wrong with an ordinary friend giving her a ride.”
True.
Yan Xunzhen suddenly realized she had fallen into an extreme mindset. At first, she had only wanted to interact normally with Du Zuilan, ideally becoming friends. But later, it turned into having to keep her distance from the female lead, afraid she might accidentally make a mistake and end up like in the book.
But the truth was, she wasn’t a scum alpha and would never do such things. Du Zuilan wouldn’t just stab her for no reason.
Now, she finally sorted out her thoughts more clearly.
Since she didn’t dislike Du Zuilan and could change her own reputation, why not interact with her normally and positively?
Otherwise, she might make changes without Du Zuilan noticing, rendering all her efforts futile.
Avoidance wasn’t the solution.
Yan Xunzhen slowly exhaled, her wavy curls cascading slightly over her chest before she brushed them aside, revealing her fair neck, which carried a faint scent of Longjing tea.
In the hospital room, Du Zuilan, nestled in soft blankets, seemed to stir slightly, her lashes fluttering as if she were about to wake.
And Yan Xunzhen said, “Mm.”
“I’ll take her to the set.”
