- Chapter 4 - Wanting to Escape
Yan Xunzhen turned around.
She stood frozen for a full five seconds, wondering if she had misheard.
But she never doubted her hearing, so she hesitated and asked again, “Um, did you say that wrong? I’m not a doctor, but don’t worry, you’ll be fine soon.”
Facing the female lead, she had to suppress all her wandering thoughts, stiffening like a block of wood as she spoke seriously:
“Don’t rush to the wrong cure in desperation.”
Du Zuilan remained obediently seated in place, her eyes misty as she stared at her delicate toes, still resembling a dazed little kitten.
Silent and sullen.
Yan Xunzhen’s heart softened slightly.
When she had read the novel before, she had always liked Du Zuilan. In the story, no amount of hardship or oppression from the scummy alpha could break her, and she always stayed true to herself, eventually finding an alpha in the entertainment industry who genuinely loved her.
But Yan Xunzhen had transmigrated into the role of that scummy alpha.
She had become someone destined never to be with Du Zuilan, only able to watch her from afar. It made her think.
Ah, it really was better to keep her distance.
Yan Xunzhen sighed. She had already called the hospital, and the security here was excellent. Besides, she would keep an eye on things from outside the door, so she wasn’t worried about Du Zuilan’s safety.
After “advising” Du Zuilan, she prepared to leave. But as she opened the door, she heard Du Zuilan’s soft voice again.
“It hurts.”
Du Zuilan’s fingers were tightly interlaced.
Yan Xunzhen had intended to steel herself and walk out, but when she turned her head, she suddenly noticed an unexpected scent of orange wine in the air. The intoxicating bubbles of the aroma burst into her nostrils, and in an instant, an inexplicable heat surged from the back of her neck, trickling down her spine.
She knew the slight protrusion at the back of her neck was called a gland, and now that it was reacting suddenly, it meant she was being stimulated.
The scent of orange wine in the air revealed the source of that stimulation.
Yan Xunzhen’s hand gripped the doorknob tightly, her knuckles turning white from the strain, clearly struggling. She slowly turned back and saw that the inhibitor patch on Du Zuilan’s neck resembling a piece of skin had been half torn off by her.
Now, that delicate, fair patch of skin was slowly emitting an unbearably alluring fragrance, while the “culprit” herself lowered her slender neck, as if offering herself freely.
Help.
Yan Xunzhen’s hair partially obscured her face, along with the faint flush on her cheeks. The blazer she wore over her outfit suddenly felt like a prison, the heat making her gasp in discomfort.
The long dress beneath also clung uncomfortably to her body. Overwhelmed by the unexpected heat, she had to press her back tightly against the door, trying to absorb even the slightest hint of coolness.
She hurriedly said, “You, you need to put your inhibitor patch back on! This is really dangerous.”
Moreover, she had just thought of something.
Before reading the novel, she had seen a spoiler. Though she hadn’t finished the entire book, a friend had complained to her that it was a rushed “alpha-swapping” story with a rather abrupt ending. The first sixty percent focused on Yan Xunzhen and the scummy alpha’s storyline, thirty percent on Du Zuilan’s journey as the female lead, and only the last ten percent introduced the “true” alpha, who inexplicably ended up with Du Zuilan, claiming to have loved her for many years.
Yan Xunzhen had only witnessed the downfall of the scumbag alpha and had no idea when Du Zuilan had met the genuine alpha. Could it have been as early as now?
When Du Zuilan said she was feeling unwell and wanted “your” pheromones, she certainly wasn’t referring to Yan Xunzhen was she talking to that genuine alpha?
For some reason, the thought made Yan Xunzhen’s heart ache faintly, not intensely, but like countless tiny needles pricking softly, leaving her unsettled.
She tried to reassure her, “Don’t worry, I won’t touch you.”
Though she usually carried herself with poise and confidence in her high heels, she now stumbled slightly, gripping the door handle tightly. She wanted to leave but found herself unable to move.
Amid the scent of orange wine in the air, a faint aroma of tea gradually emerged, sweet yet slightly bitter, fresh like the air after rain, reminiscent of West Lake Longjing. Mixed with the orange wine, it created an inexplicable fruity tea fragrance.
West Lake Longjing, the fragrance of tea likely her pheromones. Despite having taken suppressants, she still couldn’t fully control herself after Du Zuilan released her pheromones.
If she stayed any longer, even the scumbag alpha’s miserable fate in the original novel wouldn’t be enough to cool her down.
She pinched herself hard and, without looking back, stepped out of the guest room, swiftly shutting the door behind her. Pressing her back against it, she maintained her elegant composure.
The sound she made was loud, and her head throbbed painfully. She took a moment to catch her breath, steadying her pounding heart.
Behind the door, the faint rustling and the sudden dissipation of the orange wine scent faded into silence.
“President Yan, the pheromone specialists have arrived. Miss Du Zuilan should be fine, please don’t worry.” Yan Xunzhen had barely caught her breath when her assistant approached, holding something in his hands. He lowered his head briefly before raising it again. “Also, President Yan. should we suspend the manager and the others?”
Yan Xunzhen had waited outside the door until the assistant and the pheromone specialists arrived. Once they escorted Du Zuilan to the hospital, she quietly stepped away from the guest room.
Brushing off her suit jacket, she wasn’t surprised to catch a lingering trace of the delicate fragrance on it. She put it on and turned to her assistant, her gaze carrying a questioning look that wasn’t quite reproach. “I’ve already said what needed to be said about this matter. Must I repeat myself?”
The assistant was taken aback. He had never seen Yan Xunzhen look so chilling before, no longer the frivolous young mistress but the true heir of Junyan Group. He quickly fell silent.
“My apologies, President Yan! Understood. I’ll handle it immediately. I’ve brought the speech draft for your upcoming address. Please review it first. There are about twenty-five minutes left before the banquet concludes. I’ll remind them to prepare the lighting adjustments shortly.”
Yan Xunzhen gave a faint “Mm” in response.
Tall and long-legged, she walked briskly and soon re-entered the banquet hall. The crowd seemed unaffected by the earlier incident, the atmosphere lively as ever.
She took the prepared speech draft and skimmed through it quickly, feeling slightly dissatisfied. It was full of formalities but lacked authority, as if it were just a perfunctory routine, something no one would remember afterward.
However, given her current situation of being transmigrated into the role of a scumbag Alpha, her reputation and social standing were at an all-time low. She didn’t bother sending anyone back to make changes, instead mentally noting the key points to focus on.
Soon after, Yan Xunzhen thought of Du Zuilan that radiant figure constantly being dragged through the mud by those trying to pull her down from her pedestal and said to her assistant, “Call the person in charge of actors at Junyan Entertainment for me.”
The assistant hesitated. “President Yan, you previously said not to bother you with matters related to the entertainment industry. You mentioned you didn’t like it.”
Noticing Yan Xunzhen’s expression, he quickly backtracked. “If you’re asking about Miss Du Zuilan, her contract is with me. You were the one who instructed me to handle it before.”
Yan Xunzhen rubbed her temples. At the mention of Du Zuilan, she felt the glands at the back of her neck pulse like a heartbeat, accompanied by an inexplicable ache in her chest.
She sat down and took the contract the assistant handed her. Staring at Du Zuilan’s elegant handwriting on the cover, she seemed to catch a faint whiff of citrus fragrance again.
“After friendly negotiations, Party A and Party B have reached the following cooperation agreement: Article 1, Cooperation Content.”
Yan Xunzhen read the contract carefully but swiftly. Within minutes, she reached Article 7.
“Party A does not adhere to market-standard pricing. Prices remain fixed at 25% regardless of event standards, time, or location. If Party B wishes to adjust pricing, they must inform Party A and mutually agree upon the new terms.”
Yan Xunzhen frowned.
Twenty-five percent? For an actress with growing fame, exceptional acting skills, and striking beauty, this rate seemed unfairly low.
“Who drafted this contract? Did Miss Du Zuilan review it before signing? Did I deliberately make her sign it?”
The assistant felt uneasy. Had President Yan really hit her head too hard? When she initially set the contract terms, everyone had found them unreasonable, yet Yan Xunzhen herself hadn’t batted an eye, even thinking the rate was too generous.
Why the sudden remorse now?
The assistant replied, “Yes, President Yan. You personally set these terms.”
Yan Xunzhen: “…”
A brief moment of speechlessness.
“I’ll revise this contract later…” Yan Xunzhen paused, recalling the guidelines she’d set for herself upon transmigrating. “First, tell me aside from Junyan, which other entertainment companies are currently popular?”
“Recently, Tianneng, Yuanyi, and Ruiwang have been on the rise,” the assistant elaborated. “Tianneng is under the Tianneng Group and is our rival.”
A rival company, definitely not an option for Du Zuilan. Pass.
“Yuanyi emerged as a dark horse in the industry, but they mainly focus on idols. Actors don’t get much priority there.,”
Du Zuilan was an actress, a future award-winning one at that. An idol-centric company wouldn’t suit her. No market there.
“Ruiwang was recently brought up by the manager. The person in charge is President Wang.”
That greasy, balding man was already blacklisted. Even worse. Forget it.
It seemed Du Zuilan had no choice but to stay at Junyan.
Thinking of this, Yan Xunzhen suddenly heard her assistant’s phone ring. The assistant glanced at it and then timidly reminded her, “Tomorrow’s schedule includes attending Du Zuilan’s film opening ceremony. The director has already been informed. Also, you ordered a bouquet of flowers for her, which I’ve prepared for you. Would you like to see a picture of it?”
Yan Xunzhen: “…”
Sigh.
Everything was already arranged, should she go or not?
Keeping her distance from the female lead was really difficult!
