- Chapter 3 - Testing
Although this line was cheesy, domineering, and downright cringe-worthy.
It felt incredibly satisfying!
Some people around couldn’t help but laugh, clearly giving Yan Xunzhen a silent thumbs-up in their hearts. Honestly, even if they didn’t know her identity, her sheer presence alone was enough to make such a ridiculous line work.
Yan Xunzhen herself rarely spoke like this, so it felt refreshingly novel. A faint smile curled at her lips as she crossed her arms, fingers brushing over the delicate lines of her collarbone.
Yet, that look of disdain only made Boss Wang’s gaze grow lecherous.
As if he mistook her sarcasm for flirtation, he rubbed his fingertips together, clearly entranced by the two stunning beauties before him both on a level of attractiveness he’d never encountered before. If he could get his hands on them, he’d have bragging rights for years.
“Hahaha, little girl, you sure like to joke. Are you also an artist under Junyan? I’ve collaborated with Junyan before, how come I’ve never seen you? Are you new here?” Boss Wang clearly had no grasp of the situation. The covert glances around him only fueled his arrogance. “I’d love to get to know you too, just like Miss Du here.”
Du Zuilan wrenched her wrist free, her ulna still throbbing from his grip, but she remained silent. Her slightly curled long hair draped over one shoulder, revealing a diamond earring that sparkled like a star in the night sky.
She kept her eyes downcast, fixed on the hem of her dress, doing her best to shrink into the background.
But Yan Xunzhen noticed that, at the very least, she was standing closer to her now than to that balding creep.
That counted as significant progress.
“You’re not qualified,” Yan Xunzhen wanted to tear into him, but years of refined manners kept her words measured. “Next time you lay your filthy hands on someone, you’d better chop them off early.”
Murmurs of agreement rippled through the crowd, some laughing openly. A girl even muttered under her breath, “Exactly. A toad lusting after swan meat.”
“…” Boss Wang’s face flushed beet red. Realizing her disdain wasn’t some coy act, his temper flared. “I tried to be civil, but since you’re ungrateful, don’t blame me for being rude. You little bitch, acting all high and mighty, let me tell you, even if you’re under Junyan, I’ll make sure neither of you lasts in this industry!”
Suddenly, a pungent, grassy odor surged through the air. In small doses, it might have been mildly fresh, but concentrated, it reeked of damp earth.
In Huaguo, public regulations strictly required all alphas to wear suppressant patches or take inhibitor injections to prevent them from arbitrarily using their pheromones to oppress omegas. Omegas had similar restrictions, though theirs were for self-protection.
Clearly enraged, Boss Wang had resorted to this crude method of intimidation.
Having just taken her suppressants, Yan Xunzhen found the unfamiliar stench nauseating. She frowned at his smug expression.
“What’s wrong? A woman daring to defy me? Little thing, I’ve got connections high up in Junyan. I could have you dragged to my side in minutes.”
The murmurs grew louder, the atmosphere tenser.
Yan Xunzhen had always despised nepotism in companies, valuing fairness above all. Her phoenix-like eyes narrowed. “Oh? Do tell, who exactly are these ‘connections’ of yours?”
The scent of pheromones emanating from President Wang grew increasingly intense. Fortunately, everyone in this small area was wearing inhibitor patches, so it seemed no one was affected, though they all shot him looks of disgust.
Undeterred, he held his breath and concentrated, directing his pheromones toward Yan Xunzhen, who stood before him.
After mentioning the name of the leader Yan Xunzhen had just reprimanded earlier that day, the man leered and sneered, “What’s wrong? Don’t be scared now. Feeling tempted?”
Yan Xunzhen had intended to press further, hoping to dig up more dirt and expose the whole filthy lot in one go. But just as she turned her head to speak, she noticed Du Zuilan beside her seemed unwell.
She froze for a moment before realizing, of course. Du Zuilan had just been discharged from the hospital this morning. How could a patient, fresh out of recovery, endure the stress of attending a banquet and being assaulted by an alpha’s pheromones?
Moreover, she vaguely recalled catching a whiff of Du Zuilan’s pheromones when she first approached. Did that mean she was already struggling to hold on?
Ignoring President Wang, Yan Xunzhen’s gaze lingered on Du Zuilan with faint concern. She wanted to say something but held back.
Seeing her expression, President Wang mistook it for fear and smirked triumphantly.
However, the exchange between Yan Xunzhen and this man had lasted only a few minutes. Before Baldy Wang could revel in his smugness for long, several tall, burly beta security personnel surrounded him. Out of courtesy, since he was an invited guest, they refrained from restraining him outright.
Soon after, the event’s organizer arrived, along with the so-called “higher-up” with connections, the very manager Yan Xunzhen had criticized earlier.
The manager was well aware of his relative’s unsavory character and had often cleaned up his messes. Taking in the scene before him, he nearly fainted from fright. Trembling, he rushed to Yan Xunzhen, bowing obsequiously. “President Yan, uh, what seems to be the issue here?”
Baldy Wang’s smugness shattered instantly. He stared in disbelief as his supposed protector addressed the beautiful woman before him as “President Yan.”
She was the CEO of Junyan?!
Wasn’t the Yan family’s daughter supposed to be some good-for-nothing? Why did she exude such an intimidating presence? Why?
Yan Xunzhen shifted her slightly worried gaze away from Du Zuilan and fixed it on the gaggle of rats before her, her expression cold and unreadable as she took in their panic.
“I heard you can make anyone’s life at Junyan unbearable,” Yan Xunzhen said mildly. “Well, I just berated him earlier and criticized you before that. Does that mean you’re going to make me leave too?”
“I wouldn’t dare! I wouldn’t dare! You’re the one who should kick me out!” The manager broke into a cold sweat. Turning to the stunned Baldy Wang, he wished he could kick the man to the ground. Suppressing his fury, he cursed him inwardly before putting on a show of righteous indignation. “No, no, that’s all nonsense he made up using my name! Honestly, I’m not even close with him.”
“Oh, is that so?”
Though Yan Xunzhen said this, there wasn’t a trace of belief in her tone.
Behind her, someone brought over another chair and respectfully set it down for her.
She glanced down at the chair, brushed aside the strands of hair by her cheek, and sat down with an elegance that was nothing short of breathtaking. One shapely leg crossed over the other, her slender, delicate arm resting on her thigh, the ulna bone lightly touching the side of her face.
Her voice was commanding yet melodious, with a lazy, involuntary allure in its trailing notes: “Then you’ll have to leave with him. Junyan will blacklist you too.”
“Y-Yan CEO.”
“No, CEO Yan, he really has nothing to do with me.”
The so-called “Wang CEO,” upon hearing his supposed ally turn on him, turned pale with anger. Unable to contain his fury, he muttered under his breath, “Why are you backing down now? Didn’t you say the eldest daughter of the Yan family was just a useless playgirl who only knew how to fool around with omegas? You!”
Yan Xunzhen’s mind was a whirlwind of irritation.
She took a sidelong glance at Du Zuilan beside her, noticing her slightly pained expression, and decided to wrap things up quickly, not wanting to drag this out with the two men any longer.
The wine glass in her hand hadn’t been set down yet.
The golden liquid inside resembled champagne, its tiny bubbles rising and falling, exuding an air of luxury.
She had no idea why, since inhabiting this body, even the scent of alcohol made her tipsy. But in this situation, she couldn’t very well be holding a glass of water. So, she had dropped an effervescent tablet into it.
The next moment, with a flick of her wrist, she lightly swirled the glass and flung its contents from a distance toward the bowing Wang CEO.
Her voice was icy: “Slander me again, and I’ll make sure you learn the full weight of Chinese law. And—”
The sudden commotion at the gala had drawn more than a few curious glances. Now that it was revealed the protagonist was none other than the mysterious, ill-reputed playgirl Yan Xunzhen, the buzz escalated.
Everyone craned their necks, eager to hear what the young miss had to say.
Then came Yan Xunzhen’s words: “Miss Du Zuilan is a dear friend of mine. You insulted her. Apologize to her.”
Du Zuilan seemed taken aback by Yan Xunzhen’s actions.
When accepting the apology, she pressed her lips together, her head slightly bowed, revealing only the delicate curve of her long lashes.
“My apologies, Miss Du.” he stammered, full of regret, cursing himself for being blinded by beauty and provoking someone he shouldn’t have. “I was wrong. Please forgive me.”
With that, Yan Xunzhen gestured sharply.
Security promptly stepped in, escorting the man out. Yan Xunzhen declared he would face “the full extent of the law,” and the murmurs in the room were quickly subdued. Within moments, the gala returned to its elegant, clinking-glasses atmosphere.
Du Zuilan looked somewhat fatigued, her glowing fair cheeks tinged with a faint blush.
Clutching her wrist, Yan Xunzhen noticed she seemed unsteady, likely due to pheromones. Keeping a respectful distance, she asked softly, “Would you like to rest for a bit?”
Du Zuilan appeared to nod dazedly.
She followed Yan Xunzhen out of the gala toward a small room, matching her step for step.
Yan Xunzhen turned on the light inside the room and settled her in.
She had intended to sit down as well, but remembering the dazed look on the protagonist’s face, she took a couple of steps back. Gathering her long skirt, she revealed her slender, fair, and toned calves as she crouched before Du Zuilan, extending a hand: “Are you okay?”
Du Zuilan tilted her head slightly.
Her face, pure yet bewitching, looked adorably like a kitten’s as she cocked her head.
Yan Xunzhen coughed lightly, her ears turning red under that gaze.
Being stared at by a beautiful girl with such an expression, even the stern CEO Yan felt a bit embarrassed.
She straightened her face and said seriously, “You know, there are four types of people in this world: men, women, bad people, and I’m a good person.”
After delivering a joke that wasn’t particularly humorous, she chuckled to herself and decided to step out to make a call to the hospital.
Just as she opened the door, she heard a voice from behind.
Turning back, she saw Du Zuilan lowering her gaze, like a little kitten hoping to snuggle and roll around in someone’s arms, whispering very softly, “Pheromones, pheromones.”
What pheromones?
Seeing Du Zuilan like this, Yan Xun didn’t dare let her thoughts wander and replied earnestly, “Do you need pheromone blockers? It won’t take long, I’ll get them for you soon.”
“No! Not that.”
Du Zuilan’s expression was unreadable, only the soft, muffled whimper in her voice could be heard.
“Yours, yours.”
