The Scummy Alpha Who Transmigrated Into a Book Was Tricked by the Actress Omega - Chapter 16
However, Yan Xunzhen wouldn’t foolishly blurt out, “You don’t keep a diary in the novel,” even if she found it strange. Instead, she quickly convinced herself perhaps, like Du Zuilan attending the banquet earlier, it was because her arrival had set off a butterfly effect, leading Du Zuilan to develop new habits.
With that thought, she stopped overanalyzing and stood there calmly, lowering her head to carefully check the ground for anything Du Zuilan might have missed.
Du Zuilan’s movements paused briefly.
She composed her expression and walked over to them with light steps, tucking away the twin-ring notebook. Raising her head, her moist eyes held a hint of caution. “I’m ready.”
Yan Xunzhen nodded. The driver was already waiting downstairs, so she replied gently, “Shall we go?”
The car ride was quiet, the neon-lit scenery outside the window flashing past, its glow seeping through the glass and casting over Yan Xunzhen, who rested her cheek on one hand.
The last time she’d ridden in this car with Du Zuilan back to the manor, she had been completely amnesiac, only knowing she’d apparently committed some grave mistake upon waking.
The first time she’d ridden in it, she’d been possessed by the scummy alpha, wishing she could slap herself twice over.
Thankfully, for many days now, the scummy alpha’s consciousness hadn’t resurfaced to cause trouble.
For once, she wasn’t preoccupied with company matters. Rubbing her temples, she tried to push away all the chaotic thoughts.
Turning her head, she lowered her gaze, long lashes fluttering slightly as her eyes briefly met Du Zuilan’s before looking away.
Du Zuilan, sitting just two fists’ distance away, also seemed uncharacteristically distracted not obsessively poring over scripts or books on acting techniques.
Her ink-black, luminous eyes were fixed on some indeterminate point in the distance.
Yan Xunzhen broke the silence first, speaking softly, “We’ll be there soon. I’ve already told Aunt Li to prepare a room for you. Don’t worry.”
Du Zuilan seemed to snap out of her daze, nodding belatedly after a two-second delay. Hesitantly, she murmured, “Thank you.”
With a soft creak,
The highly private manor was guarded by dedicated personnel starting from the foot of the outer mountain. The staff inside had already opened the garage door in advance. Recognizing Yan Xunzhen’s car, they promptly greeted her respectfully.
Du Zuilan’s belongings were taken by the other servants, leaving her wrapped only in her cardigan as she hesitated slightly at the manor’s entrance.
Yan Xunzhen stepped inside first but bent down to fetch a pair of brand-new, unworn slippers for Du Zuilan.
“Aunt Li, I’m back.”
Before her words fully faded, an elderly woman in an apron her face kind and warm hurried out from the kitchen, wiping her hands dry with visible delight. “Miss, you’re back?”
Aunt Li had been with the original scummy alpha since childhood, treated with respect by Yan Xunzhen’s parents. After their passing, the scummy alpha had considered her the only family left, treating her with rare kindness.
When Aunt Li first learned that the girl she’d raised like a granddaughter had suddenly gone astray, forcibly taking an omega, she had been heartbroken. Now, seeing Yan Xunzhen seemingly return to gentleness, kindness, and integrity, she was overjoyed, all thanks, she believed, to the young omega before her.
“Miss, let me take care of that,” Aunt Li beamed, her smile so wide her eyes nearly disappeared as she showered Du Zuilan with praise. “Is this Miss Du? Ah, so beautiful even prettier than those movie stars!”
Yan Xunzhen didn’t wrestle the slippers from Aunt Li, letting her hand them to Du Zuilan instead.
Du Zuilan seemed a bit flustered, her voice soft and gentle: “Thank you, Aunt Li.”
Aunt Li quickly replied, “No need for thanks, none at all! The room the young mistress asked me to prepare for you is all set, it’s on the second floor. Would you like to see if you like it? I’ll help you put your clothes away later or would you prefer to keep them in the young mistress’s room?”
A hint of embarrassment flashed across Yan Xunzhen’s striking face as she quickly parted her red lips to interject, “Aunt Li!”
Du Zuilan shook her head. “Thank you, but I’ll take care of it myself.”
Aunt Li seemed like she wanted to say more, but she caught Yan Xunzhen’s pointed look and could only smile regretfully. “Alright then. Young mistress, Miss Du, would you like some late-night snacks?”
Du Zuilan wore an apologetic expression, having declined Aunt Li’s offers several times already. “I’m sorry, Aunt Li. As an actress, I have to watch my figure, so I can’t eat too much at night.”
Aunt Li sighed slightly in disappointment but quickly brightened again. “No worries! I’ll make breakfast tomorrow you and the young mistress must come down to eat, alright?”
Du Zuilan nodded with a faint smile before following the butler, who was carrying her belongings, upstairs to the second floor.
By the time everything was settled, the clock had already passed half past ten.
Yan Xunzhen didn’t go upstairs immediately. She wasn’t the kind of irresponsible alpha who turned a blind eye to everything; her company matters were complex and messy, so she stayed in the living room for a while, reviewing documents on the sofa.
Just as she was rubbing her temples in frustration, Aunt Li turned off the stove simmering bone broth and dimmed the kitchen lights. She tiptoed over to Yan Xunzhen and handed her two glasses of milk.
“Young mistress, it’s getting late. Shouldn’t you head upstairs to rest?”
Yan Xunzhen circled the sections in the documents that needed revisions for her subordinates tomorrow and massaged her temples. “Alright, I’ll rest soon.”
“Also,” Yan Xunzhen suddenly seemed to remember something and looked up helplessly, “Aunt Li, Miss Du doesn’t like me. Please don’t try to push us together.”
Aunt Li stood before her with a warm, knowing smile. Age had slightly hunched her back, and Yan Xunzhen worried as she bent over, so she quickly stood to help her sit down.
Aunt Li was reluctant to let the young mistress assist her and tried to straighten up. “Young mistress, I’ve watched you grow from a tiny baby into the elegant lady you are today. Seeing you do so well now makes me happy.”
“You don’t dislike Miss Du, so how could she possibly dislike you?” Aunt Li pushed the milk toward her with a grin. “Even grown-ups need to nourish themselves. Get some rest, this glass is for Miss Du.”
A hint of amusement softened Yan Xunzhen’s exasperation. “Alright, I’ll take it up to her.”
Yan Xunzhen moved quietly, carrying the glass of milk upstairs to the second floor.
The second floor had two or three guest rooms, with the rest dedicated to leisure, a home theater, a gym, all with their doors closed. Only the room Du Zuilan was staying in had its door ajar, illuminated by a single dim, warm light.
The soft golden glow spilled from the plush, cream-colored bed onto the carpet. A slender leg dangled off the edge of the bed, leading up to the figure clad in a light, comfortable nightgown.
Yan Xunzhen only caught a brief glimpse before immediately averting her gaze and lightly knocked on the open door.
There was no response from inside for quite some time.
After a moment’s thought, Yan Xunzhen stepped in quietly.
On the bed, leaning against the headboard, was a small, delicate figure. Her fair face was peaceful, with eyes gently closed, and beneath her delicate nose, her soft pink lips were also shut, she looked utterly serene.
Du Zuilan had fallen asleep just like that, propped against the pillows.
She must have been exhausted.
Yan Xunzhen set the glass of milk down softly on the bedside table, hesitating for a moment over whether to wake her.
After a pause, she decided against disturbing her.
Gently, she pulled the blanket over from the side of the bed, careful not to touch any inappropriate places, only lifting her legs slightly before tucking the blanket snugly around her, covering everything below her lovely face.
Full marks for warmth.
Yan Xunzhen stood up to leave when suddenly, she heard a soft thud.
Instinctively, she looked down and saw the familiar black double-ring notebook lying alone on the carpet.
Du Zuilan’s diary?
Pausing, Yan Xunzhen crouched down, secured the open notebook with its attached rubber band, and placed it on the bedside table.
She also took the liberty of turning off the bedside lamp before retreating soundlessly from the room, closing the door behind her.
Yet, beneath the carefully tucked blanket, Du Zuilan, who should have been deep in slumber let out a soft chuckle.
