- Chapter 13 - Determination
“So, you’re asking me how to determine.” Dr. Song’s words trailed off, her expression hesitant, as if she doubted her friend’s sanity. “Determine whether an alpha has bonded with an omega?”
“Isn’t that a stupid question? Of course, you’d feel it if you bonded. The most obvious sign would be the soreness at the omega’s gland on the back of their neck, their unexpected clinginess, emotional instability.”
Yan Xunzhen rubbed her temples, interrupting Dr. Song’s rambling: “What if we’re judging from the alpha’s perspective?”
Dr. Song faltered.
She eyed her suspiciously. “What’s wrong with you?”
Without a moment’s hesitation, her friend saw right through her. Yan Xunzhen could only let out a bitter laugh, preparing to confess: “I’m just asking because I—”
“You, you can’t be impotent, can you?!”
Dr. Song blurted out the words, and Yan Xunzhen found the assumption unexpectedly reasonable, a perfect excuse.
Yan Xunzhen nodded, her expression shifting from hesitant concealment to resolute sorrow, startling Dr. Song so much she nearly slid off her chair.
Dr. Song gasped. “You? You’re not lying to me, are you?”
Her hands trembled as she quickly flipped through Du Zuilan’s previous medical records from her last check-up, scanning them frantically while muttering to herself: “That can’t be right. Last time I checked, your pheromones had clearly undergone secondary refinement, it should have been an improvement. You!”
Yan Xunzhen, utterly devoid of an alpha’s usual pride, spoke without a shred of shame about her supposed impotence: “Don’t worry about me. This is the punishment I deserve.”
“But if that’s the case, you won’t be able to perform a permanent mark! Your pheromones won’t be able to infuse into an omega’s body, meaning you can’t bond with anyone.”
She seized the opportunity to brush past the issue and continued: “I’m not afraid of that. It really is what I deserve. She’ll definitely find a better alpha in the future. I just feel, I feel so guilty toward Du Zuilan. I might have hurt her before, so I wanted to ask, temporary marks should fade quickly, right? When I think about what I did to her before, I feel like such a scoundrel.”
Yan Xunzhen had read in books that an alpha-omega bond required mutual acceptance of each other’s pheromones, a true union of body and soul, to achieve a complete mark. So, at the very least, it was fortunate that she and Du Zuilan had only ever shared temporary marks.
Dr. Song nodded. “That’s true, but during the temporary mark period, the omega will still experience some unusual reactions.”
“A temporary mark usually takes about a week to half a month to fade. During that time, the omega will need a lot of care.” Dr. Song sighed, unable to resist giving Yan Xunzhen a pointed look. “You really were a piece of work back then.”
Yan Xunzhen unconsciously rubbed her fingertips, falling silent as the two sat in quiet confrontation.
After a long pause, Yan Xunzhen was the first to speak again, bringing up something relatively pleasant: “The King of Rui has been caught in the net. We can wrap things up in a couple of days.”
Dr. Song exhaled in relief. “That’s good. But remember, Tianneng’s methods are ruthless watch out for them stabbing you in the back.”
Yan Xunzhen gave a quiet “Mm.” “I know. Thanks.”
“You should also pay attention to protecting Du Zuilan. If you plan to strike back at Prince Rui through public opinion, be careful she doesn’t get coerced by that bald-headed Wang.”
Yan Xunzhen nodded, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear before gracefully rising to her feet and pushing the chair back into place.
Her expression was unreadable, her eyes carrying a faint, misty quality like a drizzling rain. The cool detachment in her lowered gaze made Dr. Song pause for a moment. “You’ve almost finished handling the company matters, right? What are you planning to do next?”
Yan Xunzhen hesitated slightly before replying softly, “I’m going to see Du Zuilan.”
The weather was growing increasingly hot. Even the short walk from the crew’s parking lot to the studio had many staff members seeking shade under trees, fanning themselves with small hand fans, their faces etched with irritation and impatience. Their expressions shifted, however, the moment they caught sight of the striking woman in sunglasses approaching.
“Who’s that?”
“You don’t know? That’s the CEO of Junyan Entertainment!”
“So young? She’s only in her twenties, right? Ugh, life’s so unfair she’s already a CEO at this age, and here we are still working for others.”
“Ahem, she used to be a wild child, but now…”
Their chatter abruptly stopped as they nudged each other, and the one at the front called out, “Good afternoon, President Yan.”
Yan Xunzhen removed her sunglasses, offering a slight smile as she nodded.
She had, of course, overheard their murmurs, but unless it was relevant, she preferred to pretend she hadn’t. “Good afternoon. Is Du Zuilan currently filming?”
She had wanted to contact Du Zuilan beforehand, but after a cautious attempt to call went unanswered likely due to her being on set Yan Xunzhen decided to quietly observe from the sidelines. If Du Zuilan was busy, she wouldn’t disturb her.
Truth be told, she felt quite guilty. After all, hadn’t she taken advantage of Du Zuilan? She had always assumed that as long as she didn’t stir up trouble, they could coexist peacefully. Yet trouble had found her anyway. Thankfully, Du Zuilan didn’t seem intent on mutual destruction Yan Xunzhen could only strive to behave well and hope for leniency.
Someone eagerly answered, “Yes, she’s in the studio up ahead. Would you like me to escort you?”
Yan Xunzhen thanked them.
Along the way, the person clearly wanted to chat further and used Du Zuilan as a conversation starter, smiling as they said, “You and Miss Du must be really close friends. You’re the first person to visit her on set.”
Yan Xunzhen couldn’t help but sigh inwardly before recalling something. “Miss Du’s assistant has she been replaced?”
The person quickly confirmed, “Yes, yes! Just the day before yesterday. The new assistant is much more attentive to Miss Du, unlike the previous one, sometimes we even had to step in to help her with things.”
Catching the implication, Yan Xunzhen replied, “Thank you for looking out for her. I’ll send you all a red packet later.”
“Hahaha, it’s our duty, but thank you, President Yan,” the person said, reluctantly stopping at the studio entrance. “Here we are. Please go ahead.”
The studio was spacious. Yan Xunzhen entered effortlessly, her face granting her immediate access, and settled into a corner to observe.
As it happened, Du Zuilan and Gu Yueli were in the middle of filming a scene together.
This is a classic ancient romance drama adapted from a novel, featuring a female lead with extraordinary talent and a rare treasure. Born into a poverty-stricken family, she had to forgo the sect’s grand selection to support her family and raise her frail younger sister. Yet, she still harbored dreams of immortality and, after leaving home with her sister, sought to join a cultivation sect as a disciple.
However, due to her ancient bloodline, she couldn’t learn ordinary cultivation techniques, blending into obscurity among her peers. During a trial, her rare treasure was stolen, and after enduring repeated torment and suffering, she finally grew stronger.
At this point, the male lead, who had once helped her in her darkest hour was now on the brink of death for her sake. Compelled, she embarked on a new journey to save him.
In the new continent, she faced countless hardships. After rescuing the male lead, she discovered that the ancient demon god, who had bestowed her bloodline, was actually the mastermind behind everything even her sister’s frailty was caused by this demon. By then, her sister had already fallen under the demon’s control.
Determined to protect the world’s peace, the female lead prepared to self-destruct using her treasure, taking her sister with her. Unexpectedly, her sister suddenly regained consciousness, stopped her, and sacrificed herself instead.
Overwhelmed with grief, the female lead nearly succumbed to demonic corruption but was pulled back by the male lead. In the end, she split her soul in half, one half eternally slumbering to suppress the demon, while the other, cloaked in black, continued to roam the world, safeguarding its peace.
Years later, when the male lead spotted her on the streets and called out to her, she turned back, a moment that became the story’s poignant conclusion.
This drama has no official pairing. Though the male lead is nominally the lead, his screen time is less than that of the second female lead. He’s only called the male lead because he has the most scenes among the male characters. Truthfully, the most popular pairing is between the female lead and the second female lead played by the actress and Du Zuilan.
Original novel fans are quite satisfied with Du Zuilan’s portrayal: in the early stages, her character is a young girl dressed in coarse linen, yet her starry eyes and delicate makeup give her a fragile, broken beauty, perfectly embodying the overly mature younger sister. Later, her transformation into an adorable little princess stays true to the role, a single promotional photo alone makes it seem like the character has stepped right out of the book.
Gu Yueli plays a junior sect sister in the story, a rare ally who supports the female lead and her sister.
Seeing how well both actresses fit their roles, the director couldn’t help but grip the script and say, “Good. Zuilan and Yueli, in this scene, you’re playing the moment when Yunxian (the sister) is humiliated and forced to swallow her pride. Yueli, you’re A’ning, the junior sister who feels deeply protective of Yunxian, so you step in to shield her.”
“Yunxian tries to resist but ultimately fails,” the director first explained specifically to Du Zuilan before encouraging both of them, “Give it your best!”
Both nodded. The only named supporting actor they were acting opposite was a minor character called A’ping, while the rest were extras. The props team had also arranged safety measures on the ground to prevent injuries.
By this point in the scene, Yunxian had been beaten by the crowd, curled up miserably on the ground, yet still refusing to call her sister “useless.”
She struggled to stand but kept failing, each fall met with another round of mocking laughter from the onlookers.
Through Yunxian, Yan Xunyi seemed to catch a glimpse of Du Zuilan in her past life helpless and battered under the cruelty of a scoundrel.
Back then, she must have picked herself up too, but just like now, it was with the same disheveled pain.
This was never something she should have had to endure.
Under the director’s slightly astonished gaze, Du Zuilan, playing the role of Yunxian, stood up. The frail girl’s slender frame was draped in a coarse, mud-stained garment, yet her eyes shone bright weak from illness but unyielding in spirit.
A sudden, harsh cough escaped her as she stepped forward, shielding Gu Yueli.
The slow-motion camera panned to her straight, unwavering neck, then up to her face, twisted in pain but burning with defiance.
“Cut!” The director slammed the script onto the table, eyes alight with admiration. “Brilliant!!”
Yan Xunzhen noticed her own eyes involuntarily welling up with tears.
Clutched in her hand was the strawberry milk candy she’d mentioned before the one she’d wanted to bring for her.
Unconsciously, her heart whispered, I’m sorry. Even though I’m here now, it still feels like I’m hurting you.
I’ll protect you. I swear.
