- Chapter 30 - New Journey
Ji Yufu’s sudden kiss set off a wave of shock throughout the entire crew. Everyone had assumed that her relationship with Cheng Jingling was one of convenience—that she was in it for money or resources. Some even speculated that Cheng Jingling might be holding something over her, because otherwise, how could someone as aloof and proud as Ji Yufu ever fall for a spoiled heiress like her?
But after spending time together on set, everyone’s assumptions began to crumble. Contrary to her reputation, Cheng Jingling turned out to be polite and easygoing, nowhere near as arrogant as the rumors claimed. She wasn’t even as overbearing as Jiang Yiyu, and she treated Ji Yufu with unfailing gentleness. Whatever Ji Yufu said, Cheng Jingling followed without complaint. Still, there had always been a faint, unspoken distance between them—something that, in front of genuine couples, couldn’t be hidden. Ji Yufu’s kiss shattered that distance, along with every lingering doubt.
Maybe, everyone thought, they were simply the type to keep things restrained in public.
The crowd erupted into cheers, chanting for them to “kiss again!” Cheng Jingling’s cheeks flushed pink as she smiled through the teasing. Inwardly, though, she was grumbling—great, now they’ve all pushed me straight into the fire pit; if I end up sleeping on the couch tonight, none of them are innocent.
Thinking fast, Cheng Jingling slipped an arm around Ji Yufu’s waist and pulled her close in a possessive embrace. With a playful smirk, she called out to the audience, “You want to see? Too bad—I’m saving the next kiss for when we get home!”
The room exploded with delighted whistles and gossip-laden howls. Laughing, Cheng Jingling led Ji Yufu to their seats. Once everyone had gathered around the table, the hosts raised their glasses, congratulating the group on the perfect conclusion of their Yun City trip, and teasing the next destination—an open world of vast skies and endless landscapes—wishing everyone smooth travels ahead.
Dinner stretched for nearly two hours. When the celebration ended, the cast and crew returned to the inn to pack up; tomorrow morning, they would catch an early flight to the next filming location.
Sitting in the car, Cheng Jingling gazed out at the strolling tourists. A pleasant buzz from the wine lingered in her veins, her body warm and a little tired from the day’s non-stop schedule.
Beside her, Ji Yufu looked out the window too, occasionally lifting her phone to snap photos. Ever since her debut, she’d rarely allowed herself to relax—constantly filming, performing, moving from one project to the next, like a tireless machine. But now, as the Yun City journey drew to an end, her mind drifted back to something her acting teacher had once said: “Sometimes, stopping is also a way of moving forward.”
The cool evening breeze brushed her face, carrying the faint sweetness of flowers that eased her fatigue. There was something magical about nature—it could quiet the mind and heal the spirit. Just as she was losing herself in the moment, she felt a sudden weight on her shoulder. Turning her head, she saw Cheng Jingling fast asleep, her head resting lightly against her. Her expression was peaceful, almost childlike. Ji Yufu shifted her posture so Cheng Jingling could sleep more comfortably, treating it as a small way of saying thanks for all the care she’d received.
When they arrived back, Ji Yufu gently nudged her awake. Half-asleep and disoriented, Cheng Jingling stumbled to stand—only to bump her head on the car roof. “Ow!” she yelped, collapsing back into her seat. Clutching her head, she leaned against Ji Yufu and whimpered pitifully, “Mom, it hurts!”
Ji Yufu tried to hold back a laugh and patted her head. “Alright, my big baby—open your eyes and tell me who I am!”
Cheng Jingling looked up, and realization hit her. Mortification followed fast—she wanted nothing more than to disappear into the floor.
Ji Yufu chuckled softly. “Okay, good girl. Time to get out of the car now.”
Cheng Jingling could tell she was being teased, which only made her more sulky. I’m a fierce Alpha, she thought bitterly. How can she talk to me like a toddler? But despite her indignation, she didn’t dare talk back. She merely rolled her eyes, sat up straight, and tried to leave with cool-headed dignity—only to bump her head again. She hissed in pain as laughter erupted behind her, her embarrassment reaching a new peak. What kind of cursed car is this?
Ji Yufu had already stepped out, intending to open the door for her, but He Yue came over to talk, and the two went inside together. Cheng Jingling finally climbed out, muttering under her breath, “Hmph! Laugh all you want. Someday you’ll see what a real Alpha I am!”
It was getting late, and the crew had another early morning ahead. Upstairs, Cheng Jingling passed by the lounge where Ji Yufu and He Yue were talking quietly. She happened to catch the words “Dr. Lin,” which made her pause and glance back. Ji Yufu was holding a small box, taking out a syringe and a vial of medication. Cheng Jingling realized it must be the new formula she’d asked Dr. Lin to develop and couldn’t help silently applauding the doctor’s efficiency.
After showering, Cheng Jingling came out to find He Yue gone. She walked casually to the table and asked, “What’s that?”
Ji Yufu cleared her throat. “It’s the new medicine Dr. Lin sent over. Our baby shouldn’t be touching it, okay?”
The moment that sing-song tone hit her ears, Cheng Jingling’s expression darkened. She took a deep breath to stay calm. “Did you take it yet?”
“Yes,” Ji Yufu replied simply.
Cheng Jingling nodded with satisfaction—her effort hadn’t been in vain. “Good. Remember to follow the doctor’s instructions. You scared me last time when you suddenly got that fever.”
“Mm, thank you for worrying about me, baby.”
Cheng Jingling gritted her teeth. “Ji. Yu. Fu! If you keep talking like that, I’m going to get mad!”
“Oh, don’t be mad, baby.” Ji Yufu’s tone was teasing, her eyes glinting with amusement. The more she saw Cheng Jingling fluster, the more fun it became.
Cheng Jingling glared for a long moment before turning away with a huff, sulking in silence. This woman is unbearable! she thought, presenting Ji Yufu with her most indignant back.
Ji Yufu ignored her and began packing her suitcase. Hearing the rustle of clothes, Cheng Jingling peeked over her shoulder. Sensing an opportunity to regain her pride, she sprang into action, swooping in to grab the suitcase. She flipped it open and began hurriedly folding clothes for her.
“What are you doing?” Ji Yufu blocked her with one arm.
With a mischievous grin, Cheng Jingling leaned in, bracing one hand on the wardrobe behind Ji Yufu. Her tone dropped to a dramatic whisper. “You’re my girlfriend. I won’t let you lift a finger. Not a single one!”
Ji Yufu stared at her in silence.
She’d found a brand new way to get under her skin.
She furrowed her brows, finally losing patience. With her left hand, she pressed against Cheng Jingling’s chin and pushed her away.
“Too greasy!”
The domineering CEO Alpha froze on the spot.
Ji Yufu calmly began tidying up her clothes, leaving only the pajamas she planned to wear later.
“I owe you an apology for my earlier behavior. Please forgive my ignorance—and please, stop doing that. Let’s stop hurting each other, okay?”
Cheng Jingling looked stunned. “Am I really that greasy?”
Ji Yufu stopped what she was doing, utterly speechless. “Not just a little. Extremely greasy.”
“I’m young, pretty, and rich—how could I be greasy?” Cheng Jingling was completely crushed.
Ji Yufu: “…”
It was all true, yet somehow deeply uncomfortable to hear.
“Ever heard the saying? A beautiful Alpha who’s aware of her own beauty is utterly worthless.”
Cheng Jingling blinked at her, falling silent. Her pretty eyes dimmed as if her soul had fled her body. After a long pause, she found her voice again, tentatively asking,
“So, you mean I’ve always been?”
Ji Yufu closed her eyes and gave a slow, solemn nod.
“Ugh! I’m going to sleep. Good night!” Cheng Jingling dove under the blanket, cocooning herself completely. Ji Yufu couldn’t help but laugh at the sight, finished packing her clothes, and went to take a shower.
While the sound of running water came from the bathroom, Cheng Jingling gritted her teeth under the blanket, angrily scrolling through her phone. She pulled up the online post that had “taught” her how to act like a domineering CEO Alpha, jumped straight to the comment section, and typed furiously:
“Fake! Totally useless! Do you have any idea how much it hurts an Alpha to be called greasy?”
Feeling slightly better after venting, she glanced upward—only to see an ad banner that read:
“Professional image consultation, only ¥998! Limited-time discount if you message now!”
So, it was an advertisement all along.
She checked the comment section—there was only one comment. Hers.
Perfect. The city had gained one more heartbroken soul tonight.
When Ji Yufu came out of the shower, she was greeted by the sight of a giant white “silkworm cocoon” on the bed. She couldn’t help but laugh. Was an Alpha’s pride really that fragile?
She poked at the cocoon. No response. She poked again. The cocoon wiggled slightly but remained silent.
“Are you really going to sleep like that?”
Cheng Jingling silently let half of the blanket slide off her face, resembling a seashell spitting out sand. Ji Yufu chuckled, placed a pillow between them, and lay down.
After she had settled in, Cheng Jingling turned over under the blanket.
“Um, I have a question.”
Ji Yufu looked at her flushed face and couldn’t help softening her tone. “Go ahead.”
Cheng Jingling tugged the blanket up, covering both of them completely.
“If you think I’m greasy, then why did you kiss me?” she asked quietly, unable to see Ji Yufu’s expression, her heart pounding in her throat.
“It was just for the show. Think of it like filming a kiss scene.”
“Oh.” Cheng Jingling’s heart plummeted. So, she had overthought it.
Ji Yufu poked her head out of the blanket. “Turn off the lights.”
The room went dark. Their last night in Yun City quietly came to an end.
She didn’t know how much time had passed when Cheng Jingling woke in the middle of the night. Turning on the bedside lamp, she propped herself up to check on Ji Yufu. The faint scent of whiskey lingered at the back of Ji Yufu’s neck—it was her own pheromone. No fever.
Cheng Jingling smiled in relief, whispered a soft “good night” to the sleeping woman’s back, and drifted back to sleep.
The next morning, everyone had breakfast in Yun City before heading to the airport. Once aboard the plane, the show’s next destination was finally revealed—the vast Jinping Grasslands.
After landing, the production team’s vehicles were already waiting outside. The cast piled in, marveling at the breathtaking scenery outside the windows.
It was Cheng Jingling’s first time on the grasslands. She pressed her face to the window, awed and excited by the endless expanse—herds of cattle and sheep grazing peacefully, riders galloping across the horizon. It was all so new and exhilarating.
Ji Yufu, on the other hand, was far calmer. She had filmed here before, years ago, playing the daughter of a tribal chief. Back then, she had even taken horse-riding lessons to prepare for the role. Though she was a bit rusty now, she still remembered that sense of freedom—it was nostalgic.
The convoy sped across the plains and reached the filming site by 1 p.m. The director ordered everyone to have lunch first before diving into the first shoot. The schedule was tight.
As the group disembarked, local herders stood waiting to welcome them, presenting each guest with a ceremonial white khata scarf as a gesture of respect. After some friendly greetings, their hosts invited them to dine.
Cheng Jingling stared at the grand spread before her, wide-eyed. “Uh, how are we supposed to eat this?”
Their host laughed heartily. “With your mouth, of course!”
