The Scumbag Who Bowed for Money - Chapter 29
“Let’s go. I’ve already sorted out the adoption papers and bought the cat food.”
Le Shi looked down at Xie Yuanwei. The alpha seemed lost in thought, and her body gave a slight shiver as she slipped into a daze.
Xie Yuanwei slowly looked up at her. She was still crouching, arms wrapped around her knees, eyes gazing up at the omega with a quiet and obedient expression.
She always had a way of softening people’s hearts.
Le Shi thought to herself that Xie Yuanwei really was a very gentle person.
“But we can’t bring the cat home just yet. I want to have someone design a little room for it.”
She had already made up her mind.
Xie Yuanwei opened her mouth as if to say something but stopped herself. In the end, she simply replied, “Alright.”
“Then let’s go.”
Xie Yuanwei stood up with a relaxed smile.
“I’ve been meaning to cook fish for you. Let’s stop by the supermarket.”
Le Shi looked at her for a few seconds before lowering her eyes and responding softly.
“Okay.”
She took the lead and walked out of the pet store.
“There’s a supermarket nearby. It’s not far. We can walk.”
Xie Yuanwei quietly followed behind without saying anything.
Omegas often naturally held more authority than alphas, and Xie Yuanwei had learned to follow that dynamic.
“I’ll do the shopping. Just wait for me. There are still snacks at home we haven’t finished, so we don’t need to buy more.”
Xie Yuanwei turned slightly and looked down at Le Shi.
“Alright?”
But Le Shi did not answer right away. She looked at her for a moment, then softly called her name.
“Xie Yuanwei.”
The way she said it was different from usual. Normally, when an omega spoke gently, their tone had a delicate lilt. Le Shi often said her name with a soft upward inflection. But not this time.
Xie Yuanwei sensed something changing between them. Every time Le Shi called her name like this, she felt a little more tense without knowing why.
“What is it?”
She let out a quiet breath, her eyes warm and calm as she looked over.
Le Shi took a step forward and gently adjusted the brim of Xie Yuanwei’s hat. There were people walking around them, some glancing curiously in their direction. But the omega did not care.
She had never been afraid of being seen.
She raised her hand in front of Xie Yuanwei’s face, then slowly began to lower it. Her movements were slow and deliberate, almost teasing.
Le Shi wore only a mask. They stood together in a space where strangers brushed past them, and in that fleeting moment, she reached up and gently hooked her finger under Xie Yuanwei’s mask, pulling it down.
Xie Yuanwei felt like she could finally breathe again.
She took a deep breath. Beneath the shadow of her hat, she moved closer to Le Shi. With one hand, she gently covered the omega’s mouth.
She was surrounded by the scent of soft peach pheromones, creating an invisible barrier around her. Le Shi’s hand was still close, only a short distance away from hers.
The two of them stayed completely still.
To a bystander, it looked like they were about to kiss. Even with a barrier between them, even the closest of lovers can sometimes feel afraid.
Xie Yuanwei’s breath warmed the inside of Le Shi’s palm. She could see the comfort in the omega’s eyes, and she felt the tears slipping down her own cheeks.
But why was she crying?
Le Shi spoke to her gently.
“Don’t be afraid. We’ll take it slow.”
Take it slow.
Those three words were ones Xie Yuanwei had told herself countless times.
Her voice caught in her throat. Under Le Shi’s quiet protection, she let herself sob softly. The omega reached up with her other hand and gently pinched her earlobe, whispering,
“If something makes you upset, you need to tell me. I can’t read minds. I can’t always fix everything right away. But I know when you’re not happy.”
“Can you tell me why you’re sad?”
Le Shi released her hand and used the pad of her finger to wipe away Xie Yuanwei’s tears, her voice playful.
“You really have turned into a little crybaby.”
Xie Yuanwei turned her head and avoided her touch. She quietly pulled her mask back up. Her voice was hoarse as she mumbled,
“I’m not.”
“I don’t believe you.”
Through blurred vision, Xie Yuanwei suddenly felt embarrassed. She looked down and whispered,
“Let’s just go buy groceries. People are watching.”
Le Shi nodded and agreed. She reached out and took Xie Yuanwei’s hand, gently swinging it as they walked.
Her voice lifted teasingly.
“Oh my, who was the one crying so hard just now?”
Xie Yuanwei gave a tiny struggle, but didn’t pull away.
They crossed the street together. From the outside, nothing about them seemed unusual. To strangers passing by, they simply looked like a couple in love.
Looking ahead, Le Shi asked,
“Xie Yuanwei, what were you thinking about just now?”
Xie Yuanwei stayed silent. She wasn’t sure how to act without upsetting Le Shi again.
But Le Shi asked again,
“What are you thinking about right now?”
“Xie Yuanwei, I want to know. I need to know.”
Her repeated questions finally broke through the alpha’s silence.
Xie Yuanwei still didn’t let go of Le Shi’s hand.
The sunset in the distance had already blurred the edge of the sky and land. In a soft voice, she said,
“I want to bring the cat home.”
And then she heard the almost doting sound of Le Shi’s laughter.
“Alright.”
