- Chapter 4 - The Saint's Knight ※ From the perspective of Nadine, former female knight
My name is Nadine. I am the fourth daughter of the Capre baronial family.
It was an ironic twist of fate that someone like me – a fourth daughter of a baronial family with status barely different from commoners – was granted the honorable duty of being the Saint’s Knight. Originally, this position should have been occupied by a knight from a more authoritative lineage. It was a role befitting only those with noble bloodlines and glorious achievements. Yet Prince Eric abused his privileges, the temple elders accommodated his wishes, and they forcibly assigned this duty to me.
Their purpose was petty harassment.
Prince Eric genuinely despised Lady Noella. This was because he had someone else he loved. The sentiment “if only you weren’t here” swirled within him. Bound by the formal chains of engagement, he expressed his hatred in another way. The temple elders, interpreting the prince’s intentions, appointed someone like me as the knight. As if to say, “You’re not worthy of having a proper knight assigned exclusively to you.”
But Saint Noella was a wonderful person. Even when someone as unreliable as me was sent as her knight, she welcomed me with a smile without showing any displeasure. Her eyes were filled with kindness and warmth. She didn’t care about others’ opinions or reactions. She was strong right down to her core.
Until now, she had helped many people, traveling to villages far from the royal capital. Using power said to be “the strongest of all saints throughout history,” she healed the wounded, gave light to those sinking in despair, and cured illnesses that people had given up on. She was truly worthy of being a saint who would leave her name in history.
Yet the temple and her fiancé Prince Eric treated Lady Noella terribly. It was pitiful even to watch from the sidelines. Sometimes, I could see the heavy weight of fatigue weighing on her shoulders.
The temple elders were using her power. They piled numerous tasks upon her and took credit for the results. For their own advancement and profit, they used her as they pleased. “Saintess, could you help these people too?” “Saintess, next please come here” – they burdened her with task after task without giving her any rest.
Watching them treat her like a convenient tool filled me with indignation. I couldn’t bear how pitiful Lady Noella was, being overworked on the elders’ orders. Every time I saw her wiping sweat from her brow with the back of her hand, my heart ached.
All I could do was watch from the side. Despite holding the title of Saint’s Knight, I couldn’t help her. Still, there came a day when I could no longer contain my anger. Even though she was the one suffering the most, there were shameful days when someone like me would explode with emotion.
“This workload is simply too much, no matter how you look at it!”
I shouted while trembling with clenched fists.
“The temple people are piling on too much! At this rate, Lady Noella will collapse. Why don’t you refuse?!”
Looking at the mountain of request forms and the schedule of blessing ceremonies that lasted late into the night, my patience finally snapped. As I stood there breathing heavily with anger, Lady Noella answered with a gentle smile on her tired face.
“There are people in trouble, so I want to help as much as I can. That is the mission of a saint, after all.”
Her voice was quiet but carried a straight, firm core.
“I hope that someday we can have a world where everyone can live with smiles.”
The person who should have been angrier than me remained calm. Lady Noella simply smiled. Her appearance looked as noble as a holy statue.
Seeing her so brave and uncomplaining made my chest tighten so much I felt like crying. I became unable to say anything. She was working hard to help people in trouble. It was a moment when I felt her mental strength and kindness up close.
Then I had no choice but to continue honing my skills as a knight to reduce her burden even slightly. With that thought, I continued my daily training. Swinging my sword, riding horses, improving my self-defense techniques. So that someday, I could truly help her in a meaningful way.
To acquire the proper skills worthy of being the Saint’s Knight. And to continue protecting her as her knight. Yes, I swore this in my heart. While swinging my sword repeatedly in the moonlit training ground.
One day, Lady Noella asked me a question. It was a question that would greatly change our destinies.
“Nadine, will you continue to come with me from now on?”
Her eyes held a mixture of determination and anxiety.
“Of course! I will stay with Lady Noella forever!”
I answered immediately without hesitation, placing my hand over my chest in a vow-like posture.
Then Lady Noella showed a happy smile for just a moment. Then she became serious again and spoke to me in a quiet voice.
“I intend to erase my memories from this world. At that time, your existence – you who said you would stay with me – might also be erased. Even so, will you come with me?”
This time, I thought seriously. Erasing memories. I needed time to understand what that meant. It was difficult to properly comprehend. Erasing memories from the world. My existence disappearing too. Was such a thing really possible?
Why would she do such a thing? How would she accomplish it? There were too many things I didn’t understand. But my answer was already decided. Even after careful consideration, that answer wouldn’t change.
“Of course, I will go with Lady Noella.”
I answered with firm determination.
“Even if we’re forgotten by the world, I am your knight.”
“Thank you, Nadine.”
Lady Noella took my hand.
“I’m very happy to hear you say that. Let’s continue working hard together from now on.”
“Yes!”
I nodded strongly.
And so I was allowed to become part of Lady Noella’s grand plan. To erase memories and begin a new journey. No matter how steep that path may be, I will continue to protect her. That is my proud mission.
