- The Saint Disappeared with Her Memories — Her Broken Engagement Decided the Kingdom’s Destiny
- Chapter 39 - The Saint's End ※ From False Saint Elise's Perspective
My relationship with the temple had finally ended.
I had been chosen by Lord Eric and obtained my long-cherished position as queen. Now I could live in peace for the rest of my life. There was nothing left to worry about.
From now on, all I needed to focus on was bearing children with Lord Eric. I would produce a splendid heir. That was my important duty. As queen, I could devote myself entirely to that purpose.
For that, a life free from mental burdens was crucial. When I was at the temple, I was always assigned difficult tasks. Healing this, blessing that nothing but troublesome work that exhausted me. But from now on, living freely was what mattered.
I began living the carefree life I had always dreamed of. Waking up slowly in the morning, enjoying delicious meals, wearing beautiful dresses, strolling through the palace gardens. Days spent exactly as I pleased, without anyone ordering me around.
This was truly the life I had desired.
But such a life didn’t last long.
“Your Majesty, it’s terrible!”
A maid came running in, her face pale with panic.
“The temple followers are causing chaos in the city!”
“What did you say?!”
When I heard that news, anger welled up from the depths of my heart. What foolish thing have they done now? Even though I had left the temple, I couldn’t completely pretend to have no connection. No, but this has nothing to do with me anymore. This is a problem the temple caused on its own.
If this disrupts my peaceful life as queen, I’ll never forgive them. I cursed the temple followers in my heart. You fools! Why would you do something that could ruin my happy life!
Later, various pieces of information came flooding in. What I heard left me stunned. I never imagined Lord Eric would be involved in the incident caused by the temple.
“Your Majesty, it might be dangerous to stay like this.”
I agreed with the maid’s words. This situation felt wrong. Perhaps I should escape. I needed to properly assess the situation.
It seemed the nobles were mobilizing their troops. There might be fighting. While I valued my position as queen, if I stayed, I might get caught up in it and lose my life. That was absolutely something I had to avoid.
I hadn’t produced an heir yet, but that couldn’t be helped. I could just find another man after escaping and have relations with him. Then I could claim that child as the legitimate successor. I could insist the child had royal blood.
For now, surviving by any means necessary was what mattered.
I hurriedly had my belongings gathered. Jewelry, gold, and changes of clothes. With just this, I could live comfortably wherever I escaped to.
“Hurry! Prepare the carriage—”
That’s when it happened.
The door burst open and armed soldiers stormed into the room.
“What is the meaning of this?!”
I cried out in surprise. These weren’t palace soldiers. They wore unfamiliar crests. They must be the nobles’ soldiers.
“Queen Elise, you are under arrest for conspiracy,” one soldier declared coldly.
“Conspiracy? What are you talking about? I haven’t done anything.”
There was no discussion. The soldiers paid no attention to my protests and restrained me. Cold chains were placed on my wrists.
Just like that, it was decided I would be executed alongside King Eric. This couldn’t be happening. Why was this happening to me?
In the prison cell, I reflected on my life.
Why had my life turned out so terribly?
I had been burdened with the heavy title of Saint, and to escape that responsibility I obtained the position of queen. I abandoned the failing temple and thought I had finally obtained my desired position as queen, only to lose that position too.
I had lived an unbelievably miserable life. And now I was meeting such an end. It was too cruel.
Why only me? I had worked hard too. I had worked for the people as a Saint. Why did I alone have to suffer like this? It’s unfair.
I sank into sorrow, but no one came to help me.
Even when I was led to the execution platform, there was no one to see me off. The citizens just stared at me with cold eyes. Some even threw stones. There was no trace left of the admiration I had received when I was revered as a Saint.
“False Saint!”
“You wicked woman who tormented the citizens alongside the king!”
Amid the flying insults, I remained completely alone until the very end.
And so, the temple’s last Saint was executed.
Afterward, the association continued to grow larger and larger. The “Healing Association” that Noella established developed to the point of opening branches not just within the kingdom, but in neighboring countries as well. The citizens received the association’s benefits and offered their heartfelt gratitude.
In inverse proportion to this, the existence of the temple and Saints faded from people’s memories. The magnificent temple buildings were demolished, and no one remained who remembered what had happened there or who had lived there.
Saint Elise’s name also disappeared from historical records. Future generations would live without even knowing that Saints had existed in this era. The emotions Elise felt at the end would vanish without anyone ever knowing them.
