- The Saint Disappeared with Her Memories — Her Broken Engagement Decided the Kingdom’s Destiny
- Chapter 2 - The Forgotten Saintess
As the spreading white light vanished, the vibrant commotion returned to the venue. The chandeliers once again shone brilliantly.
Despite such a widespread magical phenomenon occurring and disappearing in an instant, strangely enough, no disturbance arose. No one seemed to care.
The nobles behaved as if nothing had happened. Ladies clad in luxurious dresses tilted their glasses, while gentlemen continued their conversations in unchanged tones. And the people standing before me were no different.
“Hmm? You are…”
Prince Eric tilted his head as he looked at my face and murmured. His eyes held a confused expression that seemed to ask, “Who is this?” My existence had already completely vanished from his memory. I felt inwardly relieved that the magic had properly taken effect.
The woman beside him called Elise stared at me with a similar gaze as she spoke. Her brows slightly furrowed, her expression showing obvious disgust.
“That plain white outfit. Are you from the temple? You’ve come here to tell me, the Saintess attending this party, to return, haven’t you?”
“Yes, that’s right.”
I decided to affirm it for now. Having lost their memories of me, they were conveniently misunderstanding the situation. So, I decided to play along with an appropriate response while maintaining a gentle smile.
“I still intend to enjoy the party with Lord Eric,” Elise said while playing with her curly hair using her fingertips. “You wait quietly outside the venue until the party ends. Understood?”
Her final words carried a thorn. An unspoken pressure warning the temple priestess not to defy her, the Saintess.
“Understood.”
She waved her slender fingers in quick, shooing motions as she gave the order. An attitude that couldn’t be more arrogant. While there is indeed a hierarchy between the Saintess and temple priestesses, one normally wouldn’t speak with such haughty attitude. There should be such a thing as courtesy.
While looking down on me, she made no attempt to hide her true feelings and acted high-handedly. At the very least, she should have treated me with somewhat more decent manners.
Was this her usual personality? The memories had been rewritten as Prince Eric wished, and the world had changed to one where I didn’t exist. Perhaps because she had obtained the Saintess position in my place, she had become capable of such arrogant behavior.
Even she didn’t remember me as the Saintess. She believed without doubt that she herself was the Saintess. And in this new world, her memories were “correct.”
“If you’d like, why don’t you join the party too?” Prince Eric invited with a soft smile. “Having another beautiful priestess would make the occasion more brilliant.”
Being looked at with such friendly eyes was a fresh experience. The same person who had been cold to me until now was acting gentle, like a completely different person. If not for the kingdom’s laws, perhaps we could have naturally interacted like this.
This too must be behavior born from his lack of memories. But of course, I politely declined his invitation.
“Thank you for the invitation,” I replied in a reserved tone. “However, I still have work remaining at the temple.”
“I see, that’s truly regrettable.”
Prince Eric showed what appeared to be genuine disappointment.
“If you’d like, I could speak to the temple to have your duties exempted.”
“Thank you, but that won’t be necessary. Please excuse me.”
Prince Eric genuinely looked sincerely disappointed. Standing beside him, Elise wore a clearly displeased expression that he seemed completely unaware of. Moreover, she was directing obvious hostility toward me with her sharp gaze. I could see her eyes burning with anger. Since staying longer would likely complicate matters, I forced a deep bow and quickly left the scene.
From behind me, the voices of Prince Eric and Elise conversing washed over me like waves.
“Why would you invite such a shabby girl to the party?”
Elise’s voice dripped with obvious jealousy.
“Isn’t she one of the temple priestesses serving you, the Saintess?” Prince Eric’s voice remained calm. “If so, I thought we should get along well with her. We need to maintain good relations with the temple.”
“That’s completely unnecessary. She’s tacky and looks gloomy. Having someone like that around would make me feel depressed too.”
Elise retorted irritably.
“Hmm, is that so?”
Prince Eric’s response carried a hint of mild confusion.
Tacky and gloomy—quite the assessment. But it didn’t affect me. Rather, I was glad to confirm that their memories had been properly erased. Furthermore, it seemed new memories were already forming to compensate for the lost ones. From their conversation, I could tell that new “facts” were already taking shape. What would happen from here on—even I, who had activated the magic, couldn’t clearly say.
