The Reborn Scummy A and the Sickly O Got Together - Chapter 51
The summer was drawing to a close, and the oppressive humidity of early summer in the capital had faded. The last golden hues of twilight lingered in the sky.
Luo Mingyue looked up in a daze, her gaze meeting the radiant face of the girl before her.
At this moment, her heart swelled with a sweetness so intense it almost ached. She wished this beautiful fragment of life could last forever, yet suddenly, she stood up in a fluster, muttering, “I need to go back to my room, I still have homework to finish.”
A whirlwind of emotions surged within her, leaving her overwhelmed.
All Feng Baiming saw was her hurried retreat, mistaking it for mere shyness.
From that day on, Feng Baiming noticed Luo Mingyue had reverted to being an ostrich burying its head in the sand.
With Luo Mingyue attending university, their chances to meet had already dwindled. Now, it seemed she was actively avoiding her.
Perplexed, Feng Baiming called her younger sister, setting aside her pride to seek advice.
She phrased it delicately, recounting the teasing remark she had made to Luo Mingyue.
On the other end of the line, her sister burst into laughter, clutching her stomach. “I’m laughing so hard I’m crying, my stomach hurts! So you scared her off, huh? Oh my god, let me laugh a little more!”
Feng Baiming frowned. “I was just expressing my feelings. Besides, she was clearly shy. She obviously—”
“Obviously what?” her sister pressed.
Feng Baiming hesitated before saying, “Obviously, she likes me too.”
But as soon as the words left her mouth, her certainty wavered. She quickly added, “At least, it seemed that way.”
Her sister’s tone, however, was firm. “Anyone with eyes can see she’s crazy about you.”
“She gets nervous around you.”
“Even when we’re all together, she only has eyes for you.”
“When you talk, she listens more intently than anyone else.”
“As long as you’re there, everyone else is just background noise to her.”
With each sentence, Feng Baiming’s lips curled higher. Finally, her sister declared, “She really, really likes you.”
Feng Baiming fell silent, the call plunging into quiet. For the first time in her twenty-four years, she was deeply moved by the realization that such affection was directed at her.
“Do you like Luo Mingyue?” her sister abruptly asked, breaking the silence.
Feng Baiming paused before answering, “I don’t dislike her.”
“You’ve always hated alphas.”
“She’s different.”
“How?” her sister pressed.
But before she could answer, the call disconnected clearly, her sister’s relentless questioning had annoyed her enough to hang up.
Meanwhile, Third Miss Lu had recently undergone laser treatment on her face, confining her indoors for a week. With an ice pack pressed to her cheek, she wandered the mansion like a gloomy ghost.
Over the past five days, her own daughter had been leaving early and returning late. From Monday to Thursday, she barely came home, and when she did, she no longer spent time with Feng Baiming.
Growing concerned, Third Miss Lu stationed herself in the living room one evening, intercepting Luo Mingyue as she returned late.
“Why are you back so late on a Friday?” she demanded, her tone laced with frustration.
Then, suspicion crept into her voice. “Are you getting involved with the wrong crowd at university?”
Luo Mingyue now stood at a height of 174 centimeters, her tall and slender figure accentuated by shoulder-length black hair. The military training had left her even leaner, with honey-toned skin visible on her arms and legs, though her face had regained its original fair complexion.
Standing before her mother, even Lu San had to admit that with looks like these, her daughter could easily secure a life of wealth and comfort.
This only made her more frustrated, fearing Luo Mingyue would waste such natural advantages. “Did you have some falling out with Feng Baiming?” she pressed.
Then, surprised, she added, “Even with her gentle, unassuming nature, you managed to clash with an omega?”
Finally, she declared with certainty, “No way, did Feng Baiming start ignoring you?”
Lu San’s rapid-fire self-questioning left Luo Mingyue speechless at least half of it was accurate. She simply replied, “With university keeping me busy, I don’t have time to come back often, so we naturally drifted apart.”
Lu San’s brows shot up. “So, you don’t even text?!”
Luo Mingyue fell silent, which only stoked her mother’s anger. Lu San stood, intending to pinch her daughter’s ear, but her height limited her to a sharp twist at Luo Mingyue’s waist instead.
Wincing in pain, Luo Mingyue had no desire to engage further with her notoriously unreliable mother. But Lu San refused to let her go, dragging her into her room and peering around cautiously before shutting the door.
The still-graceful, beautiful woman clutched her chest with a sigh. “You, what am I supposed to say to you? I thought you’d finally come to your senses, no longer wasting time with that little brat Lu Jia. At least you didn’t squander the looks I gave you. Feng Baiming is from a family even Lu Ping would struggle to match, if he weren’t so useless, do you think this opportunity would’ve fallen to you?”
Luo Mingyue remained indifferent. Originally, she had little allowance, but Grandma Lu, eager to forge ties with the Feng family, had recently provided a generous sum meant as funds to woo Feng Baiming.
Instead, she’d invested it all in stocks. After repeated scoldings from her mother, two of her stocks skyrocketed within a month. Buying low and selling high, she multiplied her investment tenfold, finally silencing further criticism.
Lu San scoffed. “Don’t think that stock market windfall means anything, it’s barely enough for Lu Ping to buy a car. I never expected much from you anyway. Just listen to your grandmother, marry into a wealthy family, and as long as you don’t end up with Lu Jia, I’ll thank the heavens! But now it’s different. I’ve looked into this Feng girl, she’s never been in a relationship. The fact that she’s shown you any favor is rare. If you just swallow your pride and pursue her properly, an omega with no prior experience would be easy to win over.”
Luo Mingyue had no response, unwilling to entertain her mother’s delusions.
Lu San blocked the door, arms spread. Luo Mingyue said softly, “Mom, I’m not worthy of Miss Feng.”
Lu San lifted her chin, briefly avoiding her daughter’s gaze before retorting, “Why not? With your face, with your status as a Lu granddaughter, what’s there to be insecure about?”
Luo Mingyue let out a quiet laugh and pushed past her mother to leave. Watching her retreating figure, Lu San shouted furiously, “Fine! Now that you’ve grown wings, who taught you to treat your own mother like this?”
“Wait!”
Seeing Luo Mingyue’s hand about to touch the door, Lu San hastily called out, “Look at Lu Jia! In just a few days, she’s already laughing and chatting with that eldest young master from the Zhang family!”
Luo Mingyue’s footsteps halted.
She turned around, her expression genuinely startled.
This reaction left Third Miss Lu utterly bewildered: “What’s with that look?”
Luo Mingyue strode back quickly. Towering a full head taller than her mother, her shadow completely enveloped Lu San.
In the dim light, her pale face bore eyes as dark and luminous as obsidian, their expression resembling two clusters of eternally burning flames.
Yet these weren’t flames of passion, but something far more secretive and obsessive, a deep-seated hatred. Lu San couldn’t comprehend this nuance, yet instinctively felt fear.
She retreated two cautious steps: “Do you still care about Lu Jia? I’m not slandering her, if she could play with the Qin family’s feelings, what’s so surprising about her seducing that simpleton from the Zhang family who keeps visiting our house?”
“Besides,” Lu San continued, “Zhang Zhuoran returned to the country late. Even if he eventually learns about Lu Jia’s past, wouldn’t that little minx still find ways to talk her way out of it?”
Luo Mingyue only articulated each word with crystal clarity: “Are Lu Jia and Zhang Zhuoran together?”
