The Reborn Scummy A and the Sickly O Got Together - Chapter 23
Once the banquet theme was finalized, a professional planning team arrived to begin the antique-style decorations. Since the event was scheduled for the evening three days later on Friday, workers in uniforms could be seen coming and going from the Lu residence all day.
Since returning to the Lu family after her husband ran away, the Third Miss Lu had treated her daughter as if she didn’t exist, still obsessed with being the socialite queen of the capital.
Unfortunately, in social circles, married omegas formed one group, while the unmarried belonged to another. There were quite a few divorced women like the Third Miss Lu who came with baggage, but it was rare to find another case like hers, a rich girl who had married a poor boy.
The dramatic twist of this story was that it was the poor boy who had run away first.
Luo Mingyue couldn’t help but admire her mother’s ability to ignore the judgment of others. Though she had long given up on seeking any semblance of maternal affection and was thoroughly disappointed in her mother, she still acknowledged her mother’s actions and her unshakable confidence.
Why should one care about others’ judgments in this life?
The Third Miss Lu was far from a qualified mother, nor was she a paragon of virtue.
But she was someone who lived boldly as herself.
After the last incident, when Luo Mingyue had bid farewell to the Feng family’s parents, inadvertently upsetting her mother, there had been no significant fallout. As usual, her mother never visited unless she had a purpose.
“You should really do something about your hair,” the Third Miss Lu remarked, sitting in Luo Mingyue’s room, her newly manicured finger pointing critically.
“Don’t embarrass me at Friday’s banquet,” she added, withdrawing her hand and giving her only daughter a once-over.
“Do you even have suitable clothes? Seems like you’ve grown a bit taller. I hope you don’t exceed 180 cm, towering like a lanky giant isn’t attractive.”
Luo Mingyue was currently 175 cm tall, but she suspected she might have grown another half-centimeter recently her pant legs seemed slightly shorter.
Yet everyone who saw her these days would exclaim, “How did you get so thin?”
Her weight was perfectly normal, but her limbs had grown like the branches of a tree, slender and elongated, while her torso remained less noticeable. The Third Miss Lu knew her mother hoped she could win over Feng Baiming, and she, too, wished for her daughter’s success. The Feng family’s status in the capital wasn’t at the pinnacle of society, but compared to the Lu family’s current commercial standing, even Lu Ping, the heir, would be considered marrying up.
The Third Miss Lu scrutinized her grown alpha daughter, tall and slender, raised in the Lu household without ever lifting a finger, her skin fair and delicate.
She had once possessed waist-length hair that everyone praised, smooth as satin and cascading like a black waterfall. But then, for some inexplicable reason, she had chopped it into an uneven, shoulder-length mess. Fortunately, her hair was naturally thick and soft, and her youth made even this haphazard style accentuate her delicate, pretty face.
That pretty face now looked at her, voice as gentle as ever, and asked, “Mom, is there something you want me to do? You can just tell me directly.”
The Third Miss Lu dismissed her daughter’s previous defiance as nothing more than a teenage outburst, a fleeting tantrum born of a longing for maternal love, a desperate cry for attention.
She tilted her little finger, observing the girl’s plump apple cheeks and the mesmerizing peach blossom eyes above them. Those eyes, which should have been brimming with charm and allure, instead carried an expression so gentle and harmless like a docile lamb. It was truly a pity she was an alpha.
With a faint glance at this beautiful daughter, Third Miss Lu remarked, “You’ll fully differentiate within a year at the latest. You should start considering your future.”
“Next year I’ll only be nineteen. Aren’t we all advocating for eugenics and planned parenthood these days?”
Third Miss Lu chuckled. “Modern suppressants have almost no side effects, but since you’ve developed as an alpha, the instinct to find an omega for your rut instead of relying on synthetic suppressants is ingrained in your bones.”
Luo Mingyue didn’t respond to this. In her past life, she had relied on suppressants until death, never experiencing the so-called alpha instincts her mother spoke of. She had never shown aggression toward any omega.
Her family found it strange, simultaneously looking down on her as an inadequate alpha while firmly believing she would eventually display the inherent flaws of her designation.
They’re so accustomed to looking down from their high perch. Have they ever truly seen me for who I am?
Luo Mingyue gave a bitter smile. Why couldn’t she see her family’s true nature in her past life? Was it really that hard to recognize? Or was it because, deep down, she couldn’t bear to admit she was that pitiable like those children in news stories who, despite receiving the least love, become the most filial, exhausting every means to earn affection?
They would make excuses for their parents: “Mom and Dad love me too; they’re just better to my younger siblings because they’re smaller…”
So, admitting you’re neither wanted nor loved is actually the hardest thing to say aloud.
Third Miss Lu continued, “Friday’s gathering will have many people your age. At your stage, you could start dating an omega.”
“But why look far when the solution is near?” Third Miss Lu hinted to her daughter. “Your grandmother spoke with you, I can guess what about. Since you’ve always been obedient, why haven’t you acted?”
“Lu Ping already gave up,” Luo Mingyue replied carefully. “Miss Feng is difficult to approach.”
“What kind of trash is Lu Ping?” Third Miss Lu scoffed dismissively. “Any omega with half a brain could see his worth. You’re at least somewhat better than him.”
“This banquet is a perfect opportunity. Make sure to present yourself well. Remember, besides me caring about your future, your grandmother is also watching your every move since you’ve been so inactive.”
“After all, the allowance wasn’t for stock trading,” Third Miss Lu pointed out the money’s intended purpose. “It was specifically for you to court the Feng family’s eldest daughter.”
“But there’s no opportunity. Miss Feng isn’t someone easily approached,” Luo Mingyue said calmly. “Not everything succeeds just because we try. Some things can’t be achieved through willpower alone.”
“That’s why you must strive. As an alpha, you can’t just wait for omegas to come to you.”
After seeing her mother off, Luo Mingyue didn’t take those words to heart. In her previous life, she had also ignored these instructions neither she nor Lu Ping had succeeded in pursuing Feng Baiming, and later their grandmother hadn’t blamed anyone for it.
Perhaps it had only been an attempt to begin with. Success would have been nice, but failure wasn’t something to force.
Time wouldn’t stop moving forward just because of someone’s wishes. It was the most merciless thing in the world, even more so than the fleeting sincerity of so-called cold-hearted people.
Time could dissolve all love and hatred. Luo Mingyue wondered if, as time passed, her resentment toward Lu Jia and Lawyer Feng would gradually fade.
But at least for now, she hadn’t forgotten.
Friday arrived as scheduled. The first guest to arrive that day was the Lu family’s eldest daughter, Lu An, who had married into the Qin family. She brought her pair of twins to the Lu ancestral home early in the morning.
The two three-year-olds were now running and jumping around, letting out piercing shrieks whenever they played, just at that universally annoying age.
Following past experience, Lu An led the two little troublemakers to Luo Mingyue’s place. Her temper was too good; she was the only one with this much patience for children.
Sure enough, once inside Luo Mingyue’s room, she effortlessly coaxed the kids into competing to fold paper frogs.
Lu An sat across from her and chatted about everyday matters, mentioning that Lu Ping and the others had invited many young people to this banquet.
“Since the eldest daughter of the Feng family is also attending, they’ve managed to invite quite a few friends they didn’t usually interact with before.”
Luo Mingyue asked casually, “An-jie, is Qin Yan coming too?”
