The Reborn Scummy A and the Sickly O Got Together - Chapter 21
Returning to her room, Luo Mingyue tried to calm her still-racing heart.
She took out her ledger and a pen, forcing down the restless emotions stirring within her. She didn’t dare dwell on why she always felt so nervous around Miss Feng.
She longed for something, yet feared it all the same.
The black graphite of the pen glided smoothly across the ledger as she recorded the day’s stock market fluctuations. Checking her phone, she saw that her account balance had just barely crossed six digits today’s drop had cost her nearly ten thousand.
Yet the girl staring at her dwindling balance remained composed. She was unfazed by these fluctuations, as if everything had unfolded exactly as she anticipated. Even the stock market’s decline had been within her expectations.
Sometimes, Luo Mingyue was grateful she had been reborn at eighteen. If she had returned any earlier before adulthood, before having an ID, so many of her plans would have been impossible to execute.
Only after closing the ledger, after recording the cold numbers and analyzing the trends, did her mind briefly escape the other troubles in her life.
But once she calmed down, Luo Mingyue realized she was thinking about how to take revenge on Lu Jia. Should she just find a way to kill him?
The moment the thought surfaced, she shut her eyes. Because she had to admit, in the very next instant, another thought followed:
I’ve become this kind of person.
What difference was there between this and becoming a murderer?
At its core, her death in her past life had been caused by the relentless harassment of unethical reporters, which led to her cerebral hemorrhage. Lu Jia’s collaboration with the lawyer to slander her had merely been the aftermath.
But whether directly or indirectly, intentionally or unintentionally even if Lu Jia and Lawyer Feng never intended for her to die.
The end result was still her death.
Luo Mingyue had spent her entire life exhausting herself to be a good person. She firmly believed in her grandmother’s teachings, convinced that if she was gentle and kind enough, her family would finally see her worth.
But was Luo Mingyue truly a good person? In truth, she was nothing more than…
A coward who used kindness as a bargaining chip for others’ sincerity.
Did she really want to be good? Was her gentleness not just another mask?
Like that time in high school, when the beta girl had tearfully accused her:
You take all the blame onto yourself, making it seem like I’m the villain.
You act gentle and kind, but in truth, you have the coldest heart in the world.
Luo Mingyue pressed a hand to her forehead, her face pale. The thought of killing Lu Jia overlapped with that beta girl’s accusation.
If she really found a way to kill Lu Jia, what difference would there be between her and him? But if she gave up on revenge.
She covered her eyes, her hands and feet ice-cold. Then who would spare the corpse in the morgue, the one no one but Miss Feng had been willing to claim?
Lu Jia… Luo Mingyue lowered her hand, a bitter, mocking laugh escaping her.
The small mirror on her bookshelf reflected a face twisted with ruthless hatred. For a moment, even she found herself unrecognizable.
So this was how hatred could utterly destroy a person, shattering every part of them, then reshaping them into a monster that survived on vengeance alone.
And yet…
“I’m sorry, Miss Feng.”
Luo Mingyue thought with sorrow not only was she unworthy of this person in her past life, but even in this lifetime, she would drift further away from her.
Sometimes she felt that life was like a vast, silent sea. She was a boat adrift on the waves, occasionally believing she had reached a harbor where she could stay, but the storm would always arrive as promised.
Hatred was like towering waves, yet she still chose to set sail, even if those waves would swallow her whole.
But it didn’t matter, Luo Mingyue thought. She would cherish the memory of that once-warm harbor for the rest of her life.
–
The opportunity for revenge against Lu Jia came quickly. Lu Le and Lu Xi had suggested hosting a welcome banquet at home on the day Feng Baiming arrived.
“How about a pool party on the rooftop? The servants have already cleaned it, and there are several stunning new bikini designs this year.”
Reborn in this lifetime, Luo Mingyue listened as Lu Ping and his sisters debated the theme of the banquet.
Her thoughts drifted back to her past life, the timing and events aligned perfectly. That banquet had ended with a minor mishap last time.
Her gaze shifted to Lu Jia, who had remained quiet. When Lu Jia noticed her glance, she gave a gentle, soft smile.
Luo Mingyue softened her expression and returned a warm smile before her eyes settled on Feng Baiming, seated beside Lu Jia.
Miss Feng was dressed in casual homewear. Due to the stifling summer heat, the air conditioning had been set to 20 degrees, so she wore a loose, comfortable light-colored cotton long-sleeved shirt. She had been researching in her bedroom before being dragged to the living room by the Lu sisters.
Judging by the expression on Miss Feng’s face and her frequent glances at her phone, she clearly wanted to return to her room.
Meanwhile, Lu Ping and his foolish sisters were still arguing over whether the banquet should be held indoors or outdoors.
Lu Xi crossed her arms. “Forget about a barbecue on the lawn, Lu Ping. In this weather, you’d roast yourself before anything else. And have you considered the mosquitoes? If you’re so eager to be a walking blood bank for them, don’t drag the rest of us and the guests into it.”
Lu Ping retorted, “A pool party with bikinis, do you think Grandma would approve? Besides, this banquet isn’t just for you omegas to show off. Trust me, with your figures, no alphas would even notice.”
Lu Xi and Lu Le shrieked in unison, “Lu Ping!”
Lu Xi snapped, “Big brother, how could you say that?”
Lu Le huffed, “Then we’ll just have to hold it indoors. But what’s the point of a small indoor banquet?”
Feng Baiming noticed the young alpha’s gaze sweeping over her, and a thought occurred to her. She paused the phone she had been idly spinning in her hand.
She wanted to add Luo Mingyue’s contact information.
But she wasn’t oblivious to the fact that this person was deliberately keeping her distance. Feng Baiming found this contradiction puzzling.
She wasn’t being conceited. That young alpha had clearly gone out of her way to catch her attention during their first meeting.
So it was only natural that she, like her sister Feng Shaoyang, had assumed this alpha had intentions of pursuing her.
Yet, surprisingly, Feng Baiming didn’t feel repulsed. It was rare for her not to dislike an alpha outside her family.
Feng Baiming didn’t harbor hatred toward all alphas, but she did feel disgust toward this group as a whole.
After all, in her experience growing up, once genetic testing identified someone as an alpha, those once sweet and innocent childhood friends would gradually become arrogant, conceited, and start looking at omegas with a different gaze.
Their personalities and inner selves became distorted simply because of their secondary gender.
Feng Baiming had despised them for so long that she could no longer tell whether she hated arrogance, ignorance, and pride or if she fundamentally despised the gender itself.
But Luo Mingyue was truly different. Her gentle, innocent gaze, her sensitive and delicate words. An eighteen-year-old alpha girl, yet still an undifferentiated child at heart. Most importantly, those eyes of hers, soft as a drizzle.
So there really were alphas like this in the world.
After her younger sister Feng Shaoyang left, they spoke on the phone, and the topic turned to Luo Mingyue again.
“Has Luo Mingyue done anything else since then? No matter what she does, don’t fall for it, it’s just typical alpha tricks!” Feng Shaoyang said.
Feng Baiming could only answer honestly, “I think she seems to be avoiding me. She doesn’t want anything to do with me.”
“That doesn’t make sense! As the host, shouldn’t she be treating you, the guest, better?”
“So, you shouldn’t always call her a scummy alpha,” Feng Baiming said. “You don’t even know her well. Don’t judge someone you don’t understand.”
“She’s definitely playing hard to get,” Feng Shaoyang declared confidently. “See? By avoiding you, she’s already caught your attention again.”
