The Reborn Scummy A and the Sickly O Got Together - Chapter 18
Adding flowers to embroidery is always easy, everyone knows this principle. Lu Ping simply went along with his sister’s words: “This young mistress has always been indifferent to me anyway, and this incident will only make her dislike me more. Honestly, don’t you think Mingyue and the Feng family’s young mistress would make a better match?”
Lu Ping usually spoke without restraint, but never crossed the line. Though shallow, he was somewhat clever in his own way.
As the alpha eldest son, his upbringing was filled with encouragement from those around him, a “privilege” most alphas enjoyed in this society.
The power of language isn’t just evident in how beautiful, sorrowful words can move people to tears, or how witty, sharp remarks can make them burst into laughter.
Words and language often carry potent psychological implications.
People always tell alphas: “As an alpha, you must be brave, confident, and willing to try anything, that’s what a true alpha is.”
To omegas, they say: “You must learn housework, be sensible, obedient. Acting like this isn’t befitting an omega, your future alpha will disdain you.”
Luo Mingyue, in her past life, hadn’t escaped mainstream notions either. She too harbored gender stereotypes. When an entire society, countless people, whisper such things in your ear, you inevitably come to believe that your gender should dictate your behavior.
Even as a victim of these stereotypes herself, her childhood experiences and education leading others to criticize her, an alpha, for not behaving “alpha enough.”
Too gentle, too soft, lacking courage and ferocity.
Some even said outright: “You should’ve been born an omega or beta.”
This plunged her into anguish over the perceived mismatch between her personality and gender. Her initial impression of Feng Baiming was similarly that this omega didn’t behave as an omega should.
Only later did Mingyue understand: words can be frostbitten blades or swirling snow. Those who can stand firm against the torrential voices of millions, who can ascend against the crowd, only such people possess truly independent souls.
That resilient spirit was something she lacked and would never attain, though she deeply envied it.
Lu Ping had reaped too many advantages from being an alpha. The guy brimmed with blind confidence, though even that was preferable to self-aware insecurity.
Otherwise, society wouldn’t have so many fools in leadership positions.
How strange society is confident idiots become leaders, while insecure, diligent people remain worker ants.
Lu Ping genuinely believed Feng Baiming’s disinterest was her problem.
“Why is everyone silent?”
After speaking, Lu Ping noticed no one responded. His two sisters just stared at him speechlessly, while Lu Jia looked hesitant, lips parting as if to speak.
Luo Mingyue merely lifted her eyelids to give him a cold glance. Undeterred, Lu Ping declared righteously: “Feng Baiming doesn’t act like an omega at all. What omega has such an intimidating aura that it scares alphas away? Who knows what poor sod will end up marrying such an un-omega-like wife.”
“You’re being incredibly rude,” Luo Mingyue said. “Gender has nothing to do with it. Speaking ill of others behind their backs isn’t something a morally upright person would do.”
“You’re in no position to criticize me,” Lu Ping retorted, taking a deep breath before standing up and stepping right in front of Luo Mingyue.
“I’ve been meaning to say this, Luo Mingyue, have you been taking the wrong pills lately? I never liked how you always pretended to be the nice guy, but now you’re walking around with that face every day. What, do we all owe you money or something?!”
“I’m just stating facts. This is basic moral decency,” Luo Mingyue replied, tilting her head up to meet Lu Ping’s gaze without a trace of fear.
Even though Lu Ping towered over her, if it came to a fight…
A sudden calm smile crossed her lips, almost as if she were hoping Lu Ping would throw the first punch.
In her mind’s eye, she could already see them tangled in a brawl, fists and hysterical curses flying through the ancestral Lu family home. She wouldn’t be the gentle, polite Luo Mingyue anymore.
Instead, Lu Ping took two steps back, avoiding her gaze.
He slumped back onto the sofa, his tone abruptly softening. “Look, Mingyue, is something bothering you lately? We’re family, after all. You’re like a sister to me. If you’re having troubles or need money, you can always talk to me. It’s my duty to help.”
“After all, I am the eldest son of the Lu family.”
Silence followed his words, leaving Lu Ping to let out a few awkward chuckles.
The brief gathering among the younger generation ended with everyone casting bored glances at Lu Ping.
Lu Le went to call the family doctor to check on Feng Baiming again. Lu Xi dragged a reluctant Lu Jia over to Luo Mingyue, who had retreated to her room.
With feigned concern, Lu Xi asked, “Mingyue, if something’s troubling you, you should tell us. We’ll help you.”
She nudged Lu Jia forward. “Did you and Lu Jia have a falling out? Sure, Lu Jia can be a bit scheming, but as an alpha, you shouldn’t hold it against her. You two have been close for over a decade, it’d be a shame to throw that away over nothing.”
Luo Mingyue studied Lu Xi with an odd expression, suddenly realizing that in her past life, she had always played the role of the agreeable, endlessly patient doormat for Lu Ping and the others. Yet, no one had ever genuinely cared about her or offered to help.
It was strange, now that she had stopped being nice, stopped trying to be the good person, people suddenly treated her with more courtesy and kindness.
The world was a bizarre place, and human nature even more so. She had been taught that kindness begets kindness, that treating others well would earn their goodwill in return.
But reality showed that those who were too kind often led the hardest lives.
“I’m not troubled by anything,” Luo Mingyue replied to Lu Le. But when she caught Lu Jia’s evasive gaze, a flurry of thoughts raced through her mind.
Ever since Luo Mingyue had fixed her with that eerie, hostile stare and sharp words, Lu Jia had instinctively sensed danger. Now, she avoided meeting Luo Mingyue’s eyes until she noticed that familiar warmth and softness had returned to them, as if nothing had changed.
Luo Mingyue offered a bitter smile, her gaze tender as she looked at the girl before her. “It was just a nightmare. I had a terrible dream, and it’s left me in a foul mood these past few days. I ended up taking it out on all of you.”
“It was just a dream.” Hearing this answer and seeing Luo Mingyue’s expression return to normal, Lu Xi asked with a smile, “What did you dream about? You’ve been acting like a completely different person these past few days, people might think you’d been replaced from the inside.”
“I dreamed that I was falsely accused and died, my body lying in the morgue with no relatives willing to claim it,” the girl said softly.
Lu Xi and Lu Jia: “……!”
Lu Xi immediately widened her eyes: “Pah! What kind of dream is that! Dreams always go the opposite way, how could we possibly not claim your body I mean, that’s such an inauspicious dream!”
“Yes, it was just a dream.” Luo Mingyue smiled gently. “I shouldn’t have been giving you both the cold shoulder these past few days. I’m sorry.”
“Now that we’ve talked it out, it’s fine,” Lu Xi said magnanimously. “We’re family, no one is closer than us.”
“So have you forgiven me, Lu Jia?” Luo Mingyue gazed quietly at the seemingly fragile girl who appeared easy to bully. “I said many things to you that I shouldn’t have.”
Lu Jia looked at the alpha before her with uncertainty, hesitating until Lu Xi grew impatient: “Lu Jia, Mingyue used to treat you the best are you really going to hold onto this? Don’t be so petty.”
“It was just a nightmare.” Lu Jia bit her lip, putting on a pitiful, ingratiating smile, her eyes filled with cautious concern.
She said earnestly, “Sister Mingyue, it was just a nightmare. If you were ever in danger, I’d be the first to come to your side.”
“Thank you, Lu Jia,” Luo Mingyue replied gratefully, her eyes growing even gentler and softer.
But the moment she turned away: “I’ll go change my clothes first.”
All traces of gentleness vanished from her delicate features. On that beautiful young face, a trace of resentful, bitter hostility even appeared between her brows. For a moment, she seemed like a vengeful ghost crawling back from hell, drenched in resentment.
