The Reborn Scummy A and the Sickly O Got Together - Chapter 17
She froze at the sound of “Luo Mingyue.” Across past and present lives, her interactions with Feng Baiming had always been marked by utmost politeness and formality.
In their first meeting in her previous life, she knew the other was the treasured jewel of the Feng family. She was also drawn to Feng Baiming’s often-criticized cold and detached demeanor, a trait she herself lacked, making Feng Baiming seem like someone with an unshakably strong sense of self.
Luo Mingyue thus admired and looked up to her. Feng Baiming addressed her politely as “Miss Luo,” and she, in turn, carefully and respectfully called her “Miss Feng.”
That was why hearing “Luo Mingyue” now left her momentarily dazed, stirring an inexplicable emotion in her chest.
Luo Mingyue knew full well this wasn’t a sign of intimacy or familiarity, just an unconscious slip of the tongue from Miss Feng.
Yet she couldn’t help but feel bewildered. Why did being called by her name alone affect her like this? The young alpha pressed a hand to her chest, her heartbeat pounding loudly in her ears.
But soon, Feng Baiming’s next question turned her blood cold, and deep guilt surged through Luo Mingyue’s heart.
Feng Baiming had already gotten out of bed, slipping her feet into slippers. Finding the room too chilly, she draped a thin long-sleeved coat over her shoulders.
Seeing the girl standing frozen in place, she couldn’t understand why such an ordinary question had elicited such a reaction.
This wasn’t the only contradiction about Luo Mingyue. After a pause, Feng Baiming said, “You must realize that not answering is, in itself, an answer. It seems we really have met before.”
“In that case, I’m truly sorry. I have no memory of you at all. I thought our first meeting was at the Lu family’s place.”
The girl standing there turned and walked toward her, stopping before the petite omega seated on the bed.
Realizing her height and the downward gaze might be imposing, she crouched down, shifting from looking down to hugging her knees and gazing up at the girl before her.
Sunlight fell on the young alpha’s soft, lovely cheeks, tracing the long, dark lashes.
Feng Baiming noticed how thick and curled her eyelashes were, her pupils filled with stubborn determination. Staring into those pure, childlike upturned eyes, she was struck by how adorable and beautiful they were.
The young alpha said, “I’ve helped many people. Some thanked me, others dismissed it, and some never even said a word of gratitude. But Miss Feng, you’re different.”
“You once helped me, yet I never even got the chance to thank you.”
Feng Baiming stared blankly at the girl. “How did I help you?”
“You once asked if I was cold, then held my hand. You made me feel that warmth still existed in this world.”
“Your words are too strange. I don’t understand.” Feng Baiming sighed. “If you’re just saying these odd things to get my attention, you’ve succeeded somewhat.”
“That’s why, in this world, you’re the last person who should ever apologize to me.”
The girl spoke earnestly, her fluffy black hair framing her delicate, pretty face as a faint smile appeared. Yet a fine mist veiled her eyes.
Just like their first meeting, when she had run downstairs barefoot, her eyes shimmering with drizzle as if on the verge of tears.
The world was vast, yet at that moment, the beautiful girl’s eyes held only her figure.
Feng Baiming felt slightly dazed. “I wish you would speak clearly instead of always saying things that confuse me.”
“Miss Feng, thank you,” the girl continued, speaking as if to herself.
Feng Baiming was almost irritated, anger was an emotion she rarely experienced.
But then the girl gently reached out and, under Feng Baiming’s puzzled gaze, lightly grasped her right hand, just a fleeting touch.
Frowning, Feng Baiming instinctively withdrew her hand, but Luo Mingyue retracted hers even faster.
As if answering a question, the girl said, “I’m not cold, Miss Feng. I truly don’t feel cold.”
With that, she turned and left the room without another word.
Only after running out of the room and reaching the first-floor hallway did Luo Mingyue lean against the wall, clutching her chest.
She knew her words must have sounded like nonsense, if not outright delusional, then at least like something only a terminally chuunibyou girl would say.
But she couldn’t help it. She couldn’t forget her past life, lying alone in the morgue, while Feng Baiming held her lifeless right hand and asked, voice desolate, if she was cold.
Back then, her answer had gone unheard. Now, reborn, she felt compelled to bring closure to that question.
Luo Mingyue told herself this would be the last time. From now on, she would keep her distance from Miss Feng. In this second life, how could she someone as weak and cowardly as Luo Mingyue, dare to harbor a secret crush on someone as wonderful as Feng Baiming?
Leaning against the wall, she thought that by Feng Baiming’s side should stand someone strong, confident, decisive someone with admirable virtues.
Whether alpha or beta, that person should cherish her, protect her, and find endless courage in love.
Miss Feng…
She called out softly, sorrowfully, in her heart.
Wiping her eyes, Luo Mingyue pushed off the wall to return to her room, despising herself. If she truly cared for Miss Feng, she shouldn’t entertain such thoughts.
In this life, the best relationship between Luo Mingyue and Feng Baiming should be no relationship at all.
“Luo Mingyue, why are you crying? Don’t tell me you’ve actually caught something contagious?!”
A shrill voice suddenly rang out as Lu Xi peeked around the corner. “I told you, you’re too used to playing the doormat! Even good deeds have their limits. Was this really something you should’ve gotten involved in? Ugh, with your face ruined, what rich woman would even look at you now?”
Thanks to Lu Xi’s words, Luo Mingyue’s melancholy vanished instantly.
“In your eyes, is my face my only redeeming quality?”
Lu Xi covered her nose and mouth, hastily backing away as Luo Mingyue approached. “Call an ambulance already! I’ll cover for you in front of Grandmother this time, but remember, you owe me!”
Luo Mingyue sighed. “When we were kids, how many times did I take the blame for you and Lu Ping? None of you ever repaid those favors.”
“How can you be so petty? Remembering every little thing, how can an alpha be so nitpicky?” Lu Xi said, hastily running upstairs. “Don’t come any closer. I’ll call 120 right now and have an ambulance take both of you away.”
“Miss Feng’s fever has already broken, and it’s obvious at a glance that rashes and blisters are completely different. Since when do blisters look like eczema?”
Luo Mingyue, taking advantage of her height and long legs, caught up to Lu Xi in a few strides and unceremoniously grabbed her selfish younger sister.
This provoked another loud struggle from Lu Xi: “Let go of me! You say that now, but what if the rash is contagious too?”
In the early morning at the Lu family ancestral home, Lu Xi’s voice echoed relentlessly. Lu Ping and Lu Le also came downstairs fully armed wearing masks in the middle of summer, bundled up tightly.
After repeated confirmations in the living room, seeing that Luo Mingyue appeared perfectly healthy, the young woman wearing shorts and a T-shirt, her exposed skin still smooth and flawless without a single red mark they finally believed her words.
Lu Ping patted his chest: “My god, what a false alarm. Good thing I didn’t rush to Feng Baiming yesterday telling her to go to the hospital. With how I sounded, I would’ve definitely offended her.”
Lu Le gave Luo Mingyue a thoughtful glance before looking at her brother, her tone tinged with unwillingness and regret:
“We all know Mingyue’s personality, she must’ve taken excellent care of Miss Feng. At least this favor still belongs to our Lu family. When the Fengs learn their daughter was sick, they can’t blame us.”
“Still, brother, you should’ve at least visited Miss Feng yesterday,” Lu Ping sighed.
“It’s not too late for me to see her now,” Lu Ping replied nonchalantly to his sister.
“That’s completely different,” Lu Le said frankly, not avoiding Luo Mingyue’s presence as she cited an age-old principle.
“People only remember favors given in times of need. Now that her fever’s gone, adding flowers to embroidery, no one will acknowledge your kindness.”
